He said, Vie didn't you spell my name vith a vubble you?
She said, Vee vere too poor, of a vubble you to dream...
He said, Vollocks to that! And began to scream...

Somehow I felt a need to punch
That painter known as Edvard Munch
He said to us all - I'm no mug
But I can't draw earholes - can't do lugs
So I'll draw this bird with hands on her ears
And my problem with earholes disappears.
We all said, that's really stupid, to Edvard Munch
He said, it'll be all right - I've got a hunch.....

I can sorta see people getting a kick out of the thing as throwaway poster art. Maybe what this says to me is that the market for art and the market for music have wound up at about the same cultural place; no connection of any kind between ability or quality and market "value".

But then again, that painting really does resonate profoundly with a certain inexplicable deconstructed postdiscipined existential angst.

"More than any painting ever sold???"

More than any painting sold at auction, but not more than any painting sold. The Qatar Royal Family bought a Cezanne for about 250 million.

As a btw, there are three others of "The Scream" in various museums. Munch did four paintings of it.

I read a book about the theft of "the Scream" from that museum in Norway.

1. Munch painted several of them.

2. He was poor, and he painted them on cardboard. They are not going to last.

3. The person in the painting isn't emitting a scream but covering the ears and showing the pain of HEARING a scream.

4. Munch's family suffered insanity. The sound of the scream was his mind's interpretation of the intense color of a particularly vivid sunset. Some think the explosion of Krakatoa (I think it was Krakatoa) was the reason for the vivid sunset.

By the way, remember all the to-do about the sale of Van Gogh's Sunflowers for an obscene sum? It turned out that the sale was a fake. One Japanese bank wanted to transfer millions to another, and they did it by making a fake sale of Sunflowers.

Maybe the purchase of an un-unique work on cardboard for $119,900,000 money is fake, too.

I bought The Scream by Edvard Munch
It fell in half with nasty crunch
Edvard Munch - thanks a bunch!

Whenever I get in a funk,
I call to sexy Edvard Munch,
That Nordic, beefy, meaty hunk.
"I'm coming dear!" he hollers.

But suddenly he has a dream
Of existential academe,
And all he does is scream and scream,
"One hundred million dollars!"

Poor Edvard Munch, let out a Groan
He hadn't got an erogenous zone
he came from an icy northern region
That's what its like, when you're Norwegian.

Megan, I believe I read about the bank fraud in a book about finances, and I can't remember what the book was. I read a lot.

What happened was, inflation in Japan was very severe, and the government put a limit on how much one could pay for real estate in Tokyo. One bank wanted to buy a building from another, but the seller wanted more money than the law permitted. The banks got around the limit by agreeing that Bank B (the buyer) would purchase the building for the legal amount, then also buy Bank S's painting for a huge sum of money.

I could have some details wrong. The main point is that things in the news may not be what they seem.

That is an amazingly high price to pay for even a well known painting by a famous artist. Contemporary artists are certainly not getting high prices for their works. And the market for vintage artwork is still pretty soft. I guess that those with the really big bucks just want to show up all the other Daddy Warbuck wanna-bees.

So it goes!

I love it when a crap painting like that one is sold for big bucks. Every mother and grandma has better on the wall!

I have a 'Scream' hood/mask for answering the door at Halloween.

Isn't 'Sunflowers' the one that's changing colour because of the minerals in the paint?

A few years ago, I had one of those "O God I have lived long enuff" moments on reading that a record auction price for a painting had been paid in NY for a work by ~~ not Leonardo or Davids or Botticelli or Rembrandt ~~ but by that now-pretty-well-forgotten 'action'-bike-over-canvas fellow whose name eludes me for the moment ~

~ ah, Jackson Pollock, that's it.

Like I say, he is largely forgotten [isn't he?] & I think that buyer caught a cold. Surely the Munch painting has at least a lengthy tradition of admiration and respect, and is of much worth, no matter how inflated this latest price paid might seem to be?

I love that scene in the Rebel - infact, I love that film. george Sanders at his posh villainous best! Tony hancock delivering immortal lines - I said to Picasso, I'm an impressionist. he said so am I - and he did Charlie Chaplin and I did Winston Chuchill - and we got on like a house on fire.

Irene Handl - d'y' want any cake...? (very suggestively)

It's not even a painting - it's a pastel. Here's a link to it. (Don's link above shows a version with two boats).

I've seen the one in the Norwegian national museum. It's not great.

What we (or the people in general) think doesn't really register in the art market. It's what the contemporary critics and art museum directors think. Those are the ones the big money art buyers are listening to.

I'm still curious why "they" think this painting is that outstanding. Munch has an interesting biography, and he certainly has earned a place in the evolution of modern art. But such out of orbit art prices are ridiculous.

Right now the main section of the gallery in our little town is full of tons of art by high school youth in the area. Most of the work shows far more artistic skill than "The Scream". A lot of it also shows at as much, or more, creative imagination .
A substantial share of it combines these qualities with every bit as much emotional communication, often with much more sublety. The "sophisticated" art scene is a failed joke.

De gustibus non disputandum est

except that we DO.........

I can't quite comprehend liking that painting.......... but if one does like it, there are good copies that are a bit cheaper. Many millions to own a painting may be understandable if it is a masterful work by Rembrandt, exemplifying both skill & vision, but Munch never quite makes it in MY mind.

I am also bemused by those who buy such things anonymously and hide them away.

While there is no discussing taste, this is demonstrably one of the most widely recognized paintings in the world. Many people recognize the motif without connecting it to the name Munch (his name is pronounced approx. "moonk" by the way, so there goes the rhyme in much of the above...). And of course, whoever bought the thing didn't pay 119.9M for Munch's crayon strokes on cardboard, they paid for the privilege of owning the ONLY privately owned copy of one of the most famous paintings in the world. For some people with more money than they know what to do with, I guess it's worth it.

To inject a musical vein into this thread, take a look at Munch's murals from the old University auditorium in Oslo aulaen . If you put say "mingus oslo 1964" into the search field on YouTube you get this   See the mural in the background? That's Munch too, an optimistic sunrise, accompanied by Mingus and Dolphy!
