Sheffield Folk Festival 2008

Extraordinary General Meeting: Tuesday 29 January 2008

Having successfully completed its fourth year, the festival finds itself facing the question of whether or not it will be possible to put on an event in 2008.

2007 saw a considerable reduction in the number of active volunteers willing and able to organise the festival and see it through to completion. This meant that a disproportionate amount of work fell on the shoulders of a few; most of whom have indicated that they will not be able to do this again. The Annual General Meeting held on 16 December 2007 was poorly attended and no officers were elected.

If a viable management committee cannot be found, then it will be impossible for the festival to continue. This would be a sad waste of all the experience and momentum that has been built up over the last few years. Although they cannot continue in active roles, the retiring officers are more than willing to pass on the fruits of their experience, full documentation and so on to their successors; and several founder members will still be available to deal with areas such as sound, design, and web resources. The festival has no outstanding debts.

A decision must be reached soon, so that planning for 2008 can begin if it is to begin at all. To this end, an Extraordinary General Meeting has been called, to take place at 7pm in the upstairs room at the University Arms, 197 Brook Hill, Sheffield S3 7SJ, on Tuesday 29 January 2008.

It is extremely important that anyone with an interest, existing or potential, in seeing the festival continue should attend this meeting.

Maggie and I could do a bit more, like a stewarding session on the Sunday about 11am to 2pm, if you still want to us for the 'Iced Gems' on Saturday.

I would urge people to support this fine festival. We've been to 'em all and they were all great. I'll put the word around the Hull folks and see if we can't get some more help.

Thanks Les for your kind words. We hope the hard work that's been put in by everyone involved won't be in vain and that we can build on what we've achieved.

Sorry to be mundane and boring, but where's the best place to park for this meeting?

John

Not sure it's on a main road perhaps West Street and walk up.

Turn left just before University Arms and try around there. But it is luck rather than judgment. Tram stop nearby and 52 bus are handy.

Why not choose a pub with lots of parking - its not as though Sheffield is exactly short of pubs?

Why not assume people travel by the excellent public transport system - even though it is a bit dear? In fact I bet most will do. Put together this - free room, close to public transport, town centre and excellent reasonably priced beer. Session room if needed afterwards.

I'd suggest the University Arms fulfills all those criteria.

How many potential participants are likely to be put off by the parking situation, which was OK last Wednesday - I took careful note.

How true, Dave. Public transport = freedom to drink. No wonder I never learned to drive!

Helping to run a festival like this is a great chance for young people to get involved - albeit in a voluntary capacity - if you are remotely considering a career in event organisation for example - you ought to be doing this sort of thing.

Just a thought - have you passed this info on to CeilidhSoc? Might be worth trying for potential younger recruits.

The good news is that the meeting was a very fruitfull one, not fantasticly attended but we had a really good discussion. A interim committee was formed with the following people accepting these positions Chair - Jim McDonald; Vice-Chair - Trev Thomas, Secretary - Bill Mccartney & Treasurer - Chris Coates it may be that as we discuss the direstion of the event that we change personalities for these roles. The most encouraging thing from the meeting was the feeling that the event had to continue. We also had some great input from some new members especially from Gareth Roberts who organises events like the Green Fair. It is intended to have a 'brain-storming' meeting on Wednesday 13th February 6.30p.m. at the University Arms. We will include everything in this discussion venue/s, time of festival, etc. Everyone is welcome.
