I've never watched a whole tennis match in my life. It wasn't that difficult this afternoon as it took less than an hour. And I don't even like tennis much either. But the beautiful Simona Halep played a blinder today against Serena. A brilliant, almost flawless performance utterly bereft of nerves. What was lovely was that Serena was so gracious in defeat and that Simona was so humble and so naturally delighted. This won't get me watching tennis much but the match was a joy to behold.

Took you back to your student days having that popular bedroom poster
of the tennis girl scratching her arse...???

Halep played a wonderful match and never really let Serena into it. (similar to what she did to Gauff in the fourth round). She moved her larger, stronger opponent all around the court playing sharp angles with deadly accurate ground strokes and volleys and ran like a deer.
It was also great to see old Federer take down the Spanish grunter in the semis to get to the final.

Please pardon me for a moment but from class back to arse, I'm quite sure that "tennis girl" (PFR) was actually a ladyboy.

Tennis does put a lot of strain on the racket arm and, in introducing my "Tennis Tips To Try" (I managed to play A-grade juniors with a club-foot), I've suggested ladies play TABLE tennis.

That said, I do enjoy the way Simona Halep talks.

More Tennis, not a sport I've had much interest in for a long while but I guess that the 5 setter going to a tie break in the last between Federer and Djokovic would have been a good one for those who do watch it.

The cricket world cup final between England and New Zealand was a classic. Tied after 50 overs and scores level after a "super over" with England then winning on number of boundaries hit made for a finish as tense as I've seen (it was on C4) in any sport. Post match, both sides were excellent in victory/defeat.

Perhaps it's been a good spell for sport all round?

But, Jon, if Eoin Morgan was a better person he'd still be competing for Ireland and helping cricket grow there.

And, if they really care about the game, the ICC should prevent English from getting their wallets out to poach the best players from other cricket nations; and allow Welsh cricketers (like Welsh rugby and football players) to compete for Wales.

My poem on positive nationalism, "Nationalism without Conquest"

Apparently not! Unless you have a more reliable informant.

My travels, Steve, and a major in Anthropology at Adelaide Uni, certainly changed my horizons; my poem, from WalkaboutsVerse, "Repatriating - Australia to England"

You ARE deluding yourself, Steve - talking down to someone who IS very highly achieved.

One problem is, I'm largely a product of Australian training and English only respect that when it comes to rugby union or league: that being very much part of the modern English way, of course - getting wallets out and poaching the best sportspeople from other nations..."proper good sport"?

Walkaboutverse. No delusion. I am sure you area nice bloke, well travelled, intelligent and all that. But your posts come across as from someone who is small minded, parochial and somewhat of a braggart. Sorry if that offends. It is not intended to be an attack on you, just a comment on your posts. Please take it as constructive criticism.

Well who knows what "highly achieved" means...

The point of my thread title and opening post was to praise the amazing performance of the lovely Simona Halep in the women's singles final, the fantastic sporting way in which the match was played and the gracious way in which Serena accepted defeat. It was top-level sport played exactly as it should be played. I'm quite democratic about any thread I start and, if you wish to expand it into a whinge about big money in sport, or to patronise superb sportswomen by suggesting that they should stick to ping-pong, or by making disparaging references to "ladyboys", a word I've determinedly excluded from my lexicon, then all power to your elbow. All I can say is that your extensive world travels, etc, appear to have been made with your eyes tight shut.

Serena was certainly more "gracious" than at the US Open, Steve - here is a link in case your eyes were "tight shut".

I reiterate for your information: I don't watch much tennis, and my remarks should be read as my reaction to a particular match. Feel free to go scattergunning off on one. I'm not interested. Start a thread on the outrage of sport awash with money, or what an arse you consider Serena to have been in previous matches, or whether women should stick to ping-pong, and I might decide to take you on. But consider whether whingeing on in a thread about what was a great sporting event is the right thing to do.

During her match with Halep the commentators mentioned that Serena did seek professional help after her meltdown at the 2018 U.S. Open where she was anything but a gracious loser and pretty much ruined what should have been a magical moment for the 20 year old champion, Osaka. I've never been a fan of her muscular style of play and her talent for bullying umpires, linesman and even ball boys but she did conduct her self well after her last defeat so at least she's moving in the right direction, at long last.

I rarely watch tennis or read the tennis news so I didn't know about any of that. Although she didn't play very well her conduct throughout the match with Simona Halep was exemplary. Both women were a credit to the game.

There was also the nasty outburst during the 2009 US Open final against Kim Clijsters.

Sister Venus is much more serene on court (if not a nun!).

But, as I say, I prefer ladies TABLE tennis.

Frankly, I'm pretty handy at both table tennis and air hockey, Steve - good reflexes and my club foot is not much of a disadvantage.

It is quite a big disadvantage for football and tennis, of course, but, despite that, I managed to play A-grade juniors in both - suggesting that my way is indeed a good way and NOT "hot air", Steve.
