Subject: Starbucks hate Marines
From: bubblyrat

A Navy chum sent me a copy of an E-mail yesterday, the gist of which was that some British Royal Marines, serving overseas in the Middle East, had contacted Messrs Starbucks, coffee vendors, asking for a goodwill supply of their favourite brew.To which the reply was emphatically negative as Starbucks are anti-war and don't approve of the Armed Forces.Added to which insult, the E-mail suggests that ,during the WTC 9/11 atrocity, as survivors were helped from the rubble, the rescue services went to fetch water for them from the nearest source, which was a ,yes,Starbucks, who then CHARGED them for it !!
I believe that the US military have now closed down a number of Starbucks on their bases.
Can anyone out there confirm any of this ???

Can't confirm it either way.

My brother is a Royal Marine and he prefers Costa coffee!

A variation of this has been circulating on the web for at least five years, see Snopes

And, since it wasn't said above, the rumor (which originally referred to US Marines) is totally false in all of the allegations.

Ok,Art,----well,that's good to know,then !! I thought it was a BIT suspect myself,when I saw that one of the originators had been, I quote ;
                   Sgt. Howard Wright,
                        1 Platoon,
                        Recon Company,
                         Royal Marines

I can't say that in my limited dealings with British "Bootnecks" ( Leathernecks, I believe you call them ?) I was ever aware of there being a "Recon Company" ----it sounds too American,Clint, Heartbreak Ridge, etc.)!
I guess somebody out there just doesn't like Starbucks ! Unless ------

There are plenty of reasons to not like Starbucks without making up slanderous tales about them.

Reason #1: Their coffee sucks.

Yes ,I know---I can't stand the awful stuff. But you are quite right,of course----This story,in altered form, seems to have emanated from a Duncan Hobson,on "Forces Reunited", 17th November 2008.You'd think people had better things to do !! Thanks for response, everyone.

I hope you responded to the person who sent it to you telling them it has been proven to be false and ask them to forward the truth to the people they emailed the false info. I do that whenever I get a false email forwarded to me. I also give people the snopes.com web link and let them know they should check out facts before forwarding emails. Educating people about hoax emails is the only way to fight the crap. Over time, it's made some who seemed addicted to sending me these things stop the practice.

"Reason #1: Their coffee sucks."

Their whole beans? Or the way they brew it in their shops? It can make a big difference.
My complaint is that it is just way over-priced either way. If they give it to me free, I can make decent coffee with 'most' of the types.

I do the same thing, Alice. Sometimes it has repercussions - I have relatives who are ticked off at me for reminding them that snopes.com is a good place to go first. Somehow, they happen to be the politically conservative ones.

I like Starbuck's coffee. It is always strong enough, but never burned, and I can't get a 16 oz. cup (I use my own) for $1.50 anyplace else in town except Mickey-D.

Sorry, I don't speak pretention.

Subject: BS: starbucks and soldiers
From: jeddy
Date: 30 Jun 09 - 11:10 PM

i have been sent this email and thought that others might find it interesting and disturbing.

Recently, British Royal Marines in Iraq wrote to Starbucks because they wanted to let them know how much they liked their coffees, and to request that they send some of it to the troops there.

Starbucks replied, telling the Royal Marines thank you for their support of their business, but that Starbucks does not support the war, nor anyone in it,
and that they would not send the troops their brand of coffee.

So as not to offend Starbucks, maybe we should support them by NOT buying any of their products!

I feel we should get this out in the open. I know this war might not be very
popular with some folks, but that doesn't mean we don't support the boys on the ground, fighting street-to-street and, house-to-house.

If you feel the same as I do then pass this along.

Thanks very much for your support. I know you'll all be there again when I deploy once more.
                                     Sgt. Howard Wright,
1 Platoon, Recon Company, Royal Marines

PLEASE DON'T DELETE THIS... PLEASE PASS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR E- MAIL LIST, IN MEMORY OF ALL THE TROOPS WHO HAVE BEEN WOUNDED, LOST LIMBS AND EVEN DIED, SO THAT WE MAY HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE !

Also, don't forget that when the Twin Trade Towers were hit, the fire fighters and rescue workers went to Starbucks because it was close by for water for the survivors and workers, and Starbucks CHARGED THEM!!!

AN ADDED NOTE TO THIS: STARBUCKS HAD STORES ON SEVERAL MILITARY BASES IN THE UNITED STATES. THEY ARE NOW BEING REMOVED BECAUSE OF THIS.

There are 227 Starbucks stores across the UK, and there's no doubt that our soldiers would get the same response from this company, so let us do our
bit and boycott Starbucks to show them how despicable their actions are.

we have no lacal starbucks, so we cannot do anything exept pass it on PLEASE.

take care all

and our thoughts and prayers are with those brave ones and their families

Jade:

Get familiar with Snopes and Urbam Legends .com and use them to filter bullshit when it is sent to you by email from people whose highest purpose is to induce panic or anger.

There is more crap in circulation than you would believe.

If it even SEEMs too odd to be true, check it out with the good folks at Snopes.

And push back the results to those who were dumb enough to hit the forward button.

As an ex recce troop in the Royal Marines we would never call it recon platoon as Platoon is an Army word or Yank word.

Im confident enough to say that this was not put on by Bootneck.

Recce troop is part of Command Company.

Anyone who receives an email telling them to send it to everyone they know should delete it immediately, whether it's about a virus that will kill your PC, some outrageous new government policy or mutant chickens created by McDonalds. It is rumour-mongering that works the same way as viral marketing. Treat it with the suspicion and contempt it deserves.

Copy and paste some of it into a search engine with quote marks around it and you will most likely find a website showing you why you have wasted your time even opening it and giving it a second thought.

This is one of my pet peeves. When I receive any of these, I purposely go to one of the following three sites:

Truth or Fiction

Snopes

Urban Legends

Add them to your favorites, bookmark, etc. It takes less than 30 seconds to determine if something is untrue. I will check them out, even when I know they are falsehoods and then "reply all" with a a link and a note encouraging folks to always check them out. Good folks are hurt by this stuff. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A LIE THAT DOESN'T HURT SOMEONE.. Or put another way, why would you WANT to pass on an untruth as truth? What is to be gained?

I have lost "friends" over my policy of not allowing urban legends/myths/lies to stand. Damn shame, really. But I believe that this is symptomatic of a much larger ill in society. It is just another part of the trend to only reading/believing those stories that support our biases. It is my opinion that the inability to challenge ones own biases is what allows slanted "news outlets" to flourish, to literally manipulate masses of people for their own ends, and is contributing mightily to the decay of society.

Bookmark those sites, folks, and lets take these types of things on.

All the best,

Mick

Tom, don't deal with the pay day loan pirates - you may never get out from under them again. If you really need emergency help, go to Army Emergency Relief...talk to your first sergeant about it.
