I'll be giving away one shameful fact to start with here: on Sunday mornings, when we get up and hurry to get my wife to church in time to robe for choir, we usually grab fast food on the way. Feel free to castigate us for that if you want. However:

Our local Burger King has just added two new breakfast options: No.6, Southwestern Burrito, and No.7, two sausage burritos. The pricing for No.6 is $2.49 for just the burrito, $3.59 with tatter tots and coffee. The price for No.7 is $1.00 for one burrito, $3.89 for two burritos with tatter tots and coffee. In case you didn't notice, that comes out as paying 39 cents more for 49 cents less content. If I remember right, McDumpies also has at least one similar example running currently, but I didn't note down the specifics. I'm on my way just now to the Burger King website, to waste my time by telling them how impressed I am.

Theres a lot to be said for the Irish thing of having a Guinness after mass. Then your mind tends to ascend to a higher plane.

When I used to attend Midnight Mass with my Catholic cousin Anne, the majority of the Irish congregation appeared to have treated themselves to several PRE-Mass Guinnesses!

?? Can't figger out if the TYPE of burritos makes a difference. Could Sausage be a different size? You need to ask the exact price for 2 exactly the same meals ..2 burritos with potatoes & coffee.

(I once ordered breakfast at a little restaurant where "standard breakfasts" always included eggs. I don't eat eggs, so I asked for sausage, toast & coffee...just like #2, except for the eggs. She charged me 25 cents MORE for 'ala carte'. I asked why I was paying more for them to 'not cook an egg'. I got a stare and a mumbled reply about ala carte.
It has been suggested that IF I had thought to say "#2...hold the egg"...or just let them cook an egg, and left it lie, I'd have been fine. I guess I was being penalized for not playing the game properly.)

Bill... I would have said, and have said, "Call the manager and tell him I am leaving within two minutes without paying my bill." That gets their attention.

Bill, the combo prices were for one large "southwestern" burrito with potatoes and coffee, or two "sausage" burritos with potatoes and coffee. The "southwestern" was much bigger, so the fact that you could order one of those separately for $2.49, or one of the sausage ones separately for a buck, made sense. But they then effectively priced two of the little ones for 88 cents more than one "Southwestern" if you bought the combo.

Anyhow, I just got an email reply a minute ago:

Anyhow, I'll probably take it lying down just like most folks; I just decided that, at least once, I would bellyache a little while I laid there.

Burger King gives me a bellyache too. I only eat Wendy these days. Classic double with the works... half a one per meal (day). No fries. No pop. And only every two or three months.

Actually, it's been near a year. I like to get all the fixins together, buy fresh lean ground burger on sale and put up frozen burgers. Fixins are spanish onion and such. I never put up frozen burgers with the sloppy stuff like Miracle Whip or ketchup or mustard... too messy when ya nuke em. I do put in tomatoes if they are on sale but I de-seed em and take out the runny stuff.

Oh... the reason I do all that is because I buy a pack of Kaiser buns... ya gotta buy at least 6 at a time.

They are on the dollar menu!! But I just looked up the calories.... 350 per! take off 150-200 for the 2 half buns that's 550-600 calories!

Ahhmmm tellin ya... buy yer burger and fixins on sale and fry up a batch and freeze em. Cost ya five times less and there's a lot less calories. Well, quite a bit less calories, depending on how ya do em up.

I got no time for fast food burgers. And French Fries? That is just sick!

But, every now and then... Wendy... with her alluring red hair and perky... ahhhgggghhhh! Am I a burgerphile?

FP, it must be as BK says, the franchisers prices may be different. At our local BK the individual burritos (any kind) are a buck apiece.

I find the same sly trickery in Tescos. Supposedly 'On offer' large size item, when you could buy 2 small-size ones making the same weight for LESS! You have to have your wits about you. I take a calculator with me, I don't trust anybody these days! The point is that many of us (the majority I'd say) are on a very tight budget. These dishonest chicaneries are just plain greedy and wicked.

WalMart, evil corporate monsters that they are, puts the per unit price on the shelf next to the item.

Calculator makers and math teachers are constantly protesting outside their number one branch in Fayetteville Arkansas.

A while back, I ordered a burger and fries at Wendy's for Mum. The kid asked if I wanted the combo (drink with). I asked if the price was less. He said it was a better deal. I asked if the price was less. He said it was a better deal because I got the drink too. I asked if the price was less. He said it was a lot less than ordering a burger, fries and a drink separately and that's why they call it a combo (and his tone implied I was a stunned old ignorant fuck). I asked him what the price of each order would be. He was obviously annoyed when he punched his cash. He tole me the prices. I said I wanted the burger and fries and no more bullshit even tho the bullshit was free.

Don't go to burger joints. If I want a burger and fries - which isn't very often, to be honest - I make my own. And no bullshit.

gnu, they are instructed to ask that question. No use in pestering them. It is part of the implicit deal in entering a Fast food chain.

Why are they trained to ask that?

Good question, I am glad you asked.

Because the marginal cost of one drink to the store is between 5 & 15 cents. So even if they charge you 20 cents more they are still making money.

I'm not too keen on MacDonalds, but my husband quite likes one occasionally. When you go up to the service point and ask for a quarterpounder-with-cheese they always ask "Is that a meal?" I'm always tempted to answer "No, it's a horrible damp bun with muck in it." (I've learned that they mean, "Do you want hard, matchstick chips and a fizzy chemical 'drink' with that?") But at least it's quite cheap really, for a snack.

I forgot to add that the first time I went in there, the lassie asked "Do you want it to go?" I almost answered, "Yes, take it away, it looks horrid!" Wherever do they get these strange expressions from? USA I suppose. Here, we'd say "Take away, or eat in?" (Which tempts me to say, "Yes, take it away please. I really don't fancy it!")
