The Glenmorangie distillery has gone on the market today. Would Mudcatters be interested in clubbing together to buy it? I live only a 20 minute drive from the distillery, and therefore would be able to attend on a daily basis, to help run the place, and organise tastings etc. I would be proud to make this sacrifice on behalf of my fellow Mudcatters.
Never mind Sir Joh9n, or surgeon of Hull, what about Sir Hosis MacKenzie of Lairg.

We could buy it and change the name to Glenmudcat - should help sell a lot of single malt scotch that way!

I kinda like a Glenmorangie from time to time... Unless I wanna have something special... Then I tend to go Laphoraig Or Lagavullin (sp??)

Amos, Glenmorangie is a popular highland malt and a whisky I have been known to enjoy. The BBC report is here. The company seems to be valued at £300 million.

I just hope whoever takes over does not come up with a way to ruin it.

Glenmorangie does lovely things with aging some of their product in various wine casks...I might take a share. But it will probably be bought by Japanese and 'improved' until it is unrecognizable)

(But I agree about the Cragganmore & Macallans...and maybe some Highland Park. and if I want extreme flavor, Talisker.)

BillD, if you like extereme flavour, have you ever tried the Islay malts? Talsisker (Skye) does have some peaty element but something like a Bowmore, Lagavulin or Laphroaig has more.

Jon...I am simply not a fan of heavy peating. I find that funny 'tang' in Talisker more to my taste...the pure peat flavor is mixed with other elements. Lagavulin overwhelms me. Now what I DO love is Springbank, with its strange sea-salt overtones..

I can understand that. I think Lagavulin is a "love it or hate it" drink with little room for an "in between" verdict. I happen to love it but could not drink much of it. I find one glass to be taken slowly and savoured is enough.

I must try Springbank. It sounds interesting.

Try Clynelish [pronounced Cline-leesh] it's light in colour like a Spey malt, but has lovely peaty overtones like a pungent Highland Park.

Giok, thanks for that phonetic spelling. I could use similar clarifications for many other distillery names. Like, for example, Laphoraig -- I know it's quite popular (from reading about it) but have no idea how to pronounce it.

No offense, but while I'd like to be able to converse about it intelligently, I have no desire to actually *drink* Scotch -- I much prefer Irish whiskey. To each his own, of course...

I work near the bottling plant and I know a lot of people who work ther who must be worried about their jobs; hardly the "glen of tranquillity" of their TV ad now!
They also bottle "Glen Moray", a cheaper brand sold in vast quantities in our local Scotmid Co-op.

Ah, the water of life, count me in. My late aunty and uncle both worked in Ballantines distillery [ sold to Hiram Walkers ] in Dumbarton.

Hows about getting rid of those nasty old oak barrels, and going for the more hygenic alluminium option?
Then selling the stuff in cans - much more freezer cabinet friendly than those bottles.

Could raise a bit if I mortgaged my first born although she tends to be more an expense than an asset now she's resigned from Boots and the staff discount card is gone.   Would make more of an effort for Isle of Jura or the Oban ones.

Bruichladdich's my favourite, thanks to a trip to Islay, when I was ruminating in the bar at Port Askaig - "Well since we're in Islay, I have to try a local malt." This was picked up by the acute hearing of a blind man who recommended the Bruichladdich. I was distraught when I heard this was also going out of production, but owing to the long time between distillation and marketing, it still is available to purchase!
