Subject: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: MAG Date: 02 Mar 04 - 01:39 PM OK, the thread creep on the Kendall thread deserves its own thread, sez I. Kendall does not like his Serta back saver, and is sending it back. Amos recommends the tempurpedic. Are they worth the big bucks? I think I've outgrown my hard-as-a-rock futon ... Us mattress shoppers want to know. |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Mar 04 - 01:45 PM You can find some marvelous futon mattresses beyond the cotton wadding they stuff in sacks--but they cost, just like regular mattresses. Moreso, because they have to be able to bend. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: GUEST Date: 02 Mar 04 - 01:48 PM I once heard of someone called Eva-Ready, she always had a mattress strapped to her back. |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Rapparee Date: 02 Mar 04 - 01:53 PM The only way I know of to shop for a mattress is to go to the store and lay on it. Bounce on it. Try to get up from it. When you've found the one you like, ask about the guarentee. You spend 1/3 of your life in bed (at least that much!), and an uncomfortable mattress, like ill-fitting shoes, isn't worth it. You might also check Consumers' Reports.... |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Amos Date: 02 Mar 04 - 01:57 PM That was the Eva they used to call "Curb Service"?? I do like the Tempurpedic. It is firm without being hard or irritating; it accomodates your body just enough to support your curves without sagging. A |

Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: GUEST,Charmion at Work Date: 02 Mar 04 - 02:03 PM Temp-U-Pedic mattresses are, indeed, expensive, but if you can muster the cash and you have a history of back trouble, you will not regret buying one. When Edmund and I got married, five and a half years ago (!), I had to give up the bed my grandparents slept in because Edmund is at least five inches taller than your average late-victorian Canadian, and simply didn't fit. After a miserable six months on his smashed-down futon, we bought a brand-new queen-sized bed frame and a Temp-U-Pedic mattress that cost (get this) nearly $2,000 Canadian (the loonie was particularly low against the US buck at the time). Especially when used with a Japanese-type buckwheat pillow, it is by far the best mattress I have ever slept on. However, it is also the heaviest thing in the house, so it's a good thing you don't have to turn it periodically. Neither can you put a quilted mattress top on it -- the material has to feel your body temperature if it is to mold itself to your shape -- so heavy sweaters will find it a bit of a nuisance to maintain, requiring great finagling to remove and replace the zip-on cover. I find it best simply to haul the bedhead away from the wall (made possible by wooden floor and slidy bed-feet) so I can get at it from all four sides. If you have back and neck problems, especially muscle spasms arising from joint damage, you are likely to find considerable improvement with a Temp-U-Pedic mattress. |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Allan C. Date: 02 Mar 04 - 02:12 PM You can go broke in a hurry in a mattress shop. Although my eye was certainly distracted by some of those Lithuanian "Magic Foam" Space Age Wonder Mattresses, I recently opted for a comparative bargain. The Sealy, Posture Premier suits me just fine and was three or four hundred dollars cheaper than the sort I mentioned. It is among the "pillow top" models and falls within that terribly elusive zone between comfortably cushy and supportively firm. I believe that there is just about as much BS in mattress sales as there is in the rest of the world of furniture sales. One of the so called selling points of some mattresses is that they sport reinforced edges. From all I can see, this is just a clever way of describing the concealed, thick wire frame that maintains the geometric shape of some mattresses. Salesmen will tell you that no matter how often you sit on it, the edge of your bed will remain firm. So what? Unless you are someone who spends hours sitting on the edge of your bed with your legs dangling over the side, I fail to see the advantage. I don't know about everyone else, but I spend my time somewhere between the edges. Beware! And best of luck! |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Metchosin Date: 02 Mar 04 - 02:22 PM Don't know if they are availible other than in Canada but we have an Obusforme mattress from Sleep Country. Tried various others including Sealys in a similar price range and chose this. It has a layer of the same kind of foam as Amos's tempurpedic in the pillowtop across the centre section or hip area of the matress, but it costs way less bucks than the tempurpedic. We love it. Used to wake up so stiff and sore I thought I was pre-arthritic but haven't had any problems whatsoever since we purchased it last year. Only down side for me, is that it is recommended that you regularly flip and turn it, which is definitely a two person job. |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: kendall Date: 02 Mar 04 - 02:27 PM The most comfortable bed I ever slept on was 5 inches of good firm foam rubber when I was Captain of the Explorer. Maybe it's time to go back to foam rubber. |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: katlaughing Date: 02 Mar 04 - 02:36 PM We gave up our 25+year old futon which was hard as a rock when our daughter gave us her Select-Comfort or Comfort-Aire (can't remember which). It looks like a conventional mattress, but each side has baffles which you fill with air, at the touch of a button. The motor for each side sits under the bed, with remote controls. I used to ache horribly; now i have hardly any pain after a good night's sleep. I have my side the way I like it and Rog has his as he likes it. Seems to work well. I AM intererested in the NASA foam stuff. Is that the tempupedic you all are talking about? I wanted to try a pillow of it I saw at a store, but it was expensive! |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: GUEST,Charmion at Work Date: 02 Mar 04 - 02:54 PM Yes, Tempur-Pedic (I checked the spelling) is indeed that NASA foam stuff. The advertisement in the current New Yorker gives a toll-free number: 888359-8418. It claims to be Swedish, but I think furniture is stateless. |

Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: EBarnacle Date: 02 Mar 04 - 02:59 PM I agree with Kendall. When I lived on my schooner, I had a cushion made of closed cell foam and covered with a moisture resistant cover. Lived aboard for 5 years and never slept better. Of course, it might have been the sea air helping out. |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: freightdawg Date: 02 Mar 04 - 04:11 PM The Mrs. and I bought a Select comfort (the sleep-on-air mattress) and I could not be happier. You can adjust the firmness for each person, and there are some nights I want a softer setting or a firmer setting and I get it quickly. However, I think my wife would have prefered the Tempur-pedic, and so what we may do for her is buy one of those 1" knock-off mattress toppers that various department stores sell and put it on top of our Select-comfort. There actually is a hybrid bed sold, called the Nautilus, that combines the selectable air chamber with the viscuous material of the Tempur-pedic. The main reason we did not go with the Tempur-pedic is, as has been mentioned, it weighs a ton. If you are never going to move, or if you want to leave the bed with the house, go ahead. Pianos are easier to move, because at least they are rigid. That bloomin' mattress would kill me in a minute if I tried to move it. I like the material - and I think it would be a great bed, but I want a bed to help get rid of back soreness, not create it. I would be interested if anyone has tried the Nautilus hybrid bed. Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: greg stephens Date: 02 Mar 04 - 04:25 PM Sleeping is always better on a boat, the quality of the mattress is not too relevant. (1) the boat moves, which is soothing. (2) sitting on a boat all evening gives you cabin fever, it is more or less obligatory to go out and have a few beers; or, in the Western isles, a few whiskies. Result: an excellent nights sleep, in all circumstances. |

Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Allan C. Date: 02 Mar 04 - 05:23 PM I, too, had a solid foam mattress for a number of years. It was just great until summer. Then I noticed that it felt as though it was reflecting every bit of body heat. Eventually, I purchased a quilted mattress cover that seemed to solve most of the problem. Other than that, I had no complaints. Overall, I think I like what I currently have better. |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: CarolC Date: 02 Mar 04 - 05:43 PM The best we could find when JtS and I went mattress hunting was a brand called Englander. The one we picked is very firm, but that's what we need. I think that brand comes in other degrees of firmness though. And the price was about 40 percent less than the major brands. We're sleeping on foam over a hard surface right now, and we slept on a futon for a while. Of the three, I'd have to say I like the Englander best. |

Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: LilyFestre Date: 02 Mar 04 - 07:53 PM We got a new bed just last month. We got ourselves a Sealy Posture Pedic...and LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn't move when the other person in bed does, it's quiet, it's TALL and it's ever so cozy!!!! We coughed up some serious cash for this bed but we both agree that it's worth every single penny. I think the best way to find the best mattress for you is to go lay on them...together if there are 2 of you....squirm around, giggle...have fun with it and get the one that suits you best! We had thought of getting a queen or king size bed but after having a full size bed since we have known each other, those other beds just feel TOO BIG and we'd end up snuggled in the middle of them anyway!!!! And, as you know....really SOFT flannel sheets and a homemade quilt add the finishing touch to any bed!!! :) Dang...all this talk about cozy, soft spaces to cuddle...I'm thinking it's BEDTIME! Night All! Michelle |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Stilly River Sage Date: 02 Mar 04 - 09:00 PM My son will be 12 next week, and I am sure that within a couple of years he'll be well on his way to being as tall as his father (6'2"). We recently bought him a queen-sized bed because of that. We all tried the mattresses, and settled on a relatively soft one for him. It does feel very good--and the latest evidence I've heard cited shows that super hard mattresses aren't all they've been cracked up to be as far as good for your back when you're sleeping. The up side to this big of a mattress now--with all of the stuffed toys plus the two cats who hop up with him at night, there's still room for the kid. |

Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: jimmyt Date: 03 Mar 04 - 12:43 PM Have been down that matress road and bought several premium types and each one was a disappointment til I got the tempurpedic. 18 months and still every night when I lay down on it it is a wonder!!! Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Bat Goddess Date: 03 Mar 04 - 01:55 PM When the ol' waterbed died (wet tush and all) about 8 years back -- and it was a baffled variety that looked, with the top on it, like a regular mattress, we did some heavy research and really wanted to get a Tempur-Pedic. But they're very expensive. Compromised and bought a brand that claimed to have memory foam just as good for about 60% of the cost of a Tempur-Pedic. Well, it's NOT just as good. It's a decent mattress and we find it still quite confortable, but its memory is similar to the memory of its owners -- who are suffering from CRS. Moral -- spend the bucks and get the real thing. When I get a real job again I'd like to invest in one of the Tempur-Pedic's mattress toppers until I can afford to replace our mattress. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: Stilly River Sage Date: 03 Mar 04 - 03:26 PM The 12-year-old was crowded in his kid-sized twin--maybe you have the money to throw around Gargoyle, to buy a new bed every couple of years as he grows--but we looked at how tall we all are, did the math, and got him one to grow into. For some years now we've been hearing ads locally for the "Dux" bed, another Swedish mattress. Here is the link for that. It's advertised on the local classical music station. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: who likes what mattress and why From: GUEST,heric Date: 03 Mar 04 - 04:59 PM Thank y'all for this. Due to having heard Metchosin's comment that it *isn't* necessarily early onset arthritis as I had believed, in combination with the Tempur-pedic commentary, in combination with the mattress topper dream of Bat Goddess, I just this moment received my amazon auto-confirmation for the imminent delivery of my Sealy Posturepedic Accustom Royale Memory Foam and Luxury White Goose Down Mattress Topper (aka 1" knock-off mattress topper)! I couldn't order it through mudcat (if that option currently exists) or I wouldn't have also received, for just one dollar, my Euro-Pro EP031 Mini Turbo Shark 400-Watt Hand Vacuum! All this for the low low price of $150.99, a 44% savings. I have some serious sleeping to do starting March 11. |
