Subject: BS: Forest fire From: Louie Roy Date: 18 May 11 - 10:35 PM I understand that there is a forest fire in Slave Lake Canada with a 70 mph wind and that at least 30% of the town is already gone. Can anyone add more to this tragity |

Subject: RE: BS: Forest fire - Slave Lake Canada From: meself Date: 19 May 11 - 01:02 AM 7,000 people evacuated, many homes destroyed, town hall destroyed, new library destroyed, many businesses gone .... Hospital survived. No known deaths. No word on when people will be allowed back; doesn't look like it will be within the next few days; could be weeks. Biggest evacuation centre is in the town of Athabasca. Apparently people are well cared for, due to generosity of fellow Albertans, and local volunteers. I've spent much time in and around Slave Lake, and my impression is that the people in general are a resilient bunch, independent and tough, used to rolling with the punches. This is a hard thing to see, though. |
Subject: RE: BS: Forest fire - Slave Lake Canada From: maeve Date: 19 May 11 - 07:35 AM People who have lost their homes in part or completely will need many kinds of help for a long time. Some of the early flush of enthusiastic helpers will have vanished by the time fire survivors are ready to make use of whatever support is offered. I speak from my own experience. |
