Subject: Words at Twenty Paces, Heartaches at High Noon
From: Joe Offer

Hi - I was hoping I might be able to find it at the Cowpie (click) country lyrics database, but I had no luck. Maybe if you try it yourself or post a request there, you might find it. I'll send a link to this thread to our country expert. Check back here tomorrow or late tonight - note that you may have to change the number of days on the "filter" on the Forum Menu to find this thread if the last message is more than a day old.
CDNOW (click) says "Words at TWENTY Paces" is on Alabama's Mountain Music CD, and on Hugh Moffatt's Loving You. Click on the CDNOW link, and you'll see there's a sound clip of the song. Click here for information on the Hugh Moffatt recording, which is on Rounder's PHILO label.

Anonymous,

With Joe's lead, I walked over and put my Hugh Moffat LP (yeah, that's right, a vinyl LP) on the turntable and wrote down these words.

Hugh is one of those country writers who sometimes almost make it like folk music. My favorite Moffatt song was covered by Dolly Parton, "Old Flames".

Words At Twenty Paces
by Hugh Moffatt

Just like a western movie,
A challenge has been made.
A shot was fired in anger,
As pride stepped off the train.
Won't we ever stop it,
Killing me and you,
"Til our hearts are up on Boot Hill,
And there's nothin we can do.

CHO:
Words at 20 paces,
Anger at high noon.
This house ain't big enough for both of us,
It's comin' soon.
We'll finish up our happiness,
And run hope out of town,
With words at 20 paces, Lord,
It's love we're gunnin' down.

BRIDGE:
How did we ever lose the dreams we used to share? The gentle touch, the words of love,
The way we used to care.
Sometimes your words cut,
Like a bullet in my side.
Oh which is more important,
Wounded hearts or wounded pride?

I got my ammunition,
I know you've got your's, too.
We know each other's weakness, Lord,
The damage we can do.
Why can't we just step aside,
And put our guns away?
Let love come like the cavalry,
Right in and save the day. CHO:
