Subject: RE: Origins: Trying to please a radio listener From: GUEST,Kathy Miner Date: 29 Dec 20 - 03:35 PM Hello out there in Mudcat Land, I'm a volunteer for our folk music program on Wisconsin Public Radio. We got the following request from a longtime listener. I've searched your database, and every other one I commonly use, with no results. Ring any bells?? "Not sure of title: 'Tom and Rose'? I heard this on the radio about 25 years ago and haven't been able to find it online anywhere. It was sung by a solo male tenor/baritone singer with guitar accompaniment, which I know hardly narrows it down at all. The song had several verses, talking about the couple's life together; nothing dramatic happens in it. I've sung the chorus to my wife of 23 years on occasion and would just like to hear it again if possible, but I will not be heartbroken if you don't find it. Thank you for your effort.' The chorus is: You are my heart's delight, My sun, my moon, my stars at night; I will love you all my life Until my dying day." Thanks for any information you might have. I suspect it's someone local to Wisconsin, or else the greatest one-hit wonder in folk music. I would just love to be able to get back to the listener with the name of the song and artist. Peace and tranquility be ours in 2021, Kathy |
Subject: ADD: You Are My Heart's Delight (Graham/Lehar) From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Dec 20 - 04:09 PM Hi, Kathy- There was a very popular song titled "You Are My Heart's Delight," also known as "My Heart Is Yours Alone," originally "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz," an aria from the 1929 operetta The Land of Smiles (Das Land des Lächelns) with music by Franz Lehár. It was sung by every tenor on earth, and then some. Here's a recording by Richard Tauber: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtgmKpcgQ30 Here's the Wikipedia page for the song: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yours_Is_My_Heart_Alone The lyrics have most of the elements you posted, but not in the order you gave them. So, is this the song your listener requested? Maybe. But the Tauber recording is certainly a classic, and Tauber's life story is quite interesting. YOU ARE MY HEART'S DELIGHT (words by Harry Graham or Smith, music by Franz Lehár) You are my heart's delight, And where you are, I long to be You make my darkness bright, When like a star you shine on me Shine, then, my whole life through Your life divine bids me hope anew That dreams of mine may at last come true And I shall hear you whisper, "I love you." In dreams when night is falling I seem to hear you calling For you have cast a net around me And 'neath a magic spell hath bound me Yours, yours alone How wondrous fair is your beautiful hair Bright as a summer sky is the night in your eyes Soft as a sparkling star is the warmth of my love. You are my heart's delight, (repeat first verse) It's unclear from the Wikipedia article if the lyrics were by Harry Graham or Harry B. Smith. It could be that Smith wrote another set of lyrics from the same song. |

Subject: RE: Origins:Trying to please radio listener-Tom & Rose From: GUEST,Kathy Miner Date: 06 Feb 21 - 12:51 AM A retired host of our own show came up with it ... the title is indeed ‘Tom and Rose’. Writer is Wisconsin’s own Steve Hazell. You can even find it on YouTube. Wonders will never cease. Just in time for Valentine’s Day! Kathy |
