Was anyone else moved and facinated by the story of U869 that was aired on Nova this week? What got me the most was the interview with the captain of the Uboat that sank the Ruben James. He rightly assumed that he'd sunk a British destroyer. After the war, he said he learned about the 100 men and the cold water, and that it shadowed his life thereafter. Wouldn't Woody have loved that? Mike Bennett

I missed it but I'm hoping to catch it this weekend when they replay NOVA. It was good, huh?

I was very surprised to find a Mudcat thread on this great PBS show, but pleased! This was an excellent show. I am sure it'll be repeated you PBS viewers, so please keep your eye out for it (it was an episode of Nova). And yes, some personal update to history on Reuban James - among others. I wonder what Woody would have thought of the U-Boat captain and the new facts uncovered - but the incident has its place in history and lore and the newer information is, at this point, anecdotal.

Thanks for starting the thread!

I really enjoyed it. Most of my history knowledge stops at 1899, but I am a sucker for a lost watercraft of any kind. What I thought was so funny was the old German man's reaction to the news that they really HAD found U-869. He was just incredulous that what he had known for so long may not be true anyway.

Some may call it revisionist history, but as research is an ongoing process, lots of things get revised over time.
