I just returned home from the twice yearly
festival near Yosemite in the High Sierras
of California. www.strawberrymusic.com
I spent the Labor day weekend (and memorial
day at the end of May) with my friends at
Camp Dung Beetle. There are dozens of
wonderful bands on several stages and
venues...the "main music meadow",
a stage by Birch Lake, an amphitheatre
where more intimate workshops are held
with the chance to ask questions of the
performers, and ther dining hall which
serves as night club, breakfast show and
young people's dance hall.
5,000 pepople attend this event in the
mountains, and tickets sell out months before
the festival.
several other catters attend....
but i only saw Ranger Roger.
we jammed and did recording sessions
in the camp ground.

some of the high lights from this fall's line-up:
Tracy Grammer, Avalon Blues which is a group of 3
musicians who all have strong solo careers, who
joined in to put together a special set of Mississippi
John Hurt's music: Dave Alvin, Chris Smither, Peter Case.
Alison Krauss and Union Station,Natalie McMaster,
Laurie Lewis, and many others including Fruit from OZ.
There is an on-site radio station which allows
you to hear the performers even if you are not
where they are on stage.

and Great Big Sea (or big blue sea?)
who i believe are Irish, were there,
but they did not allow the radio to
broadcast them. I know some peolple
who are boycotting their cd's due to
this . OFten a band (or more likely their
agent, probably, or record label) will
not allow their music to go out over
the radio. the pirate station has less
than a one mile radius, and it is
wonder ful to hear so much good music.
since there are several stages going on
simultaneously, it is not possible to hear
all the acts unless you catch them on the
radio. too bad they did not want to
participate in this way.
