I was supposed to sing at a festival in New Orleans that weekend which was cancelled. I was supposed to sing at the Frank Harte tribute in New York that weekend which was cancelled. I'm almost afraid to try going to this in case...

But this will be better, Vicky! I'd encourage everyone to come - it is a fantastic weekend with excellent guests and a really inclusive atmostphere - and there are great singarounds too.
Look forward to seeing you there

Went to the Ewan MacColl do last year expecting a day of finger in the ear MacColl songs and nothing else - but it wasn't a bit like that. In fact, I thought there were rather too few MacColl songs! Apart from that there was some great singing in the singarounds and from the guests. As it is in the working class library, we also got a tour of the place from one of the librarians there - very interesting stuff for labour historian types like me.
This is a day of celebration of traditional music and the folk revival - it's a shame the name puts people off. I'm sorry I wont be able to go this year. Please say hello to Dave, Andy(?) and Barbara - great singers!

Well put "last year's visitor"

The existing name sends out the wrong message because whatever you think of MacColl if you enjoy fine singing you will have a great time.

I think that I should point out that this celebration started a few years ago when Salford City Council installed a plaque, commemorating the life and career of Ewan MacColl, in the Working Class Library. There were celebrations connected with the event, involving much singing and good fellowship, and some of us decided to make it an annual event.
MacColl, of course, was, and still is, a controversial person (I doubt whether he would have had it any other way) but I think that many of us felt that we had benefited, in some way, from his example.
Personally, I feel that I gained a real insight into traditional song from my contacts with him. Ewan also gave me some insights into how to sing traditional songs and for that I am forever in his debt. I'm proud to be associated with this annual celebration and I'm sure that Ewan would have been pleased that it is always an enjoyable event with a very welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.

Yes, folk singing is dead, if it ever was alive! Such a lineup of boring, pseudo McColl imitators I have never seen, not finger in your ear but finger up your arse!

Dear TradMan,

No one is forcing you to come! If it's not to your taste, go and do something else instead!
Mind you, as I said above, it's always a very friendly occasion and there is probably not a place for someone who throws gratuitous insults around. There's always room, though, for differences of opinion and civilised, reasoned debate.

TradMan, why not try the Sheffield Folk Festival instead? Plenty of variety for you.

I'll be enjoying the singing in the Working Class Library, Salford, so I won't see you there.

So well put, Guest DB.
Such a friendly and civilised gathering has no need of ill-informed bigotry and insults. Those attending appreciate the fact that the undesirable kind of folk politics is refreshingly absent and can just get down to enjoying the great singing and informed debate.

Can only make Friday night singaround but will be thinking of what I will be missing on Saturday :0).

The annexe room at the rear of the library is available this year and it is a lovely quiet room singers/concerts.

Family illness prevents Alison McMorland & Geordie McIntyre from attending the event.

However, "Th'Antiques Roadshow" and "Sid" Calderbank have confirmed their appearances.

Sorry but I won't be able to get to any of the Ewan weekend- Stewart and I are just back from America, still jetlagged, and I'm getting the train up to York after work tomorrow to stay with son Tom for the weekend- he's in his first term at York Uni studying music.

Hope you all have a wonderful time, as ever!

So... How did the rest of the weekend go?

Friday night was a real treat; it was lovely to hear good singers at ease in good company. From the moment that Dave Bishop led off to be followed by Lou Killen and Donal Maguire it was clear we were in for a magical evening that was inspiring right up to when Bob Blair concluded with "Willie's Lyke-Wake".

My herring* aid failed to cope with Sid Calderbank's song, but whatever it was that he sang it sounded brilliant!!!

It was lovely to meet so many old friends there.

Thanks to one and all that contributed!

Th'Antiques Roadshow and Marie Little joined us yesterday, whilst Donal & Lou entertained us with much humour, song and banter.

I personally would have liked to hear more of Aileen Carr: but my highlight was John O'Hagan(Cockersdale) who rather diffidently introduced himself as Aileen's chaufer. He then proceeded to perform a beautiful sweet but exquisite short ballad!

Steve Turner sang well, as did Andy & Barbara Hindley, Bob Butler, Dave Bishop and Sue vG.

Sid Calderbank & Scowie were as brilliant as ever, but Matthew wasn't the only one wondering if the Lancashire dialect they were hearing made any sense to them!

Our condolences go to Alison McMorland & Geordie McIntyre who had a death in the family that prevented them from attending.

Best wishes also to Annie Dearman for a speedy recovery from a chest infection and Ellen Mitchell suffering a broken ankle.

Today's sessions flowed seamlessly in the Terry Whelan laid-back style, with Bob Blair leading a performance workshop followed by a survivors' sing-around.

We shall be reviewing how things went shortly and will look forward to any suggestions for improvement.

All in all, a convivial and entertaining week-end.

Once again many thanks for your support.

Bob vG

So sorry not to have been able to get over this time, Bob - another of those annoying domestic emergencies I'm afraid.
Glad (but envious!) that you all had such a good time.
Well done for organising it, whatever.
Surely nothing can stop me coming over and singing next year, can it?.... (famous last words)

Correction: I misreported the problem in Alison & Geordie's family.

Kirsty was seriously ill, rather than any death in the family.

Sorry for any confusion caused.
