Subject: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: skipy Date: 27 Oct 07 - 07:14 PM I am in Portugal, there is "Kareoke" in the bar, it is beyond belief! So far beyond, that I cannot explain! Pisshead after pisshead out of tune, one after another! Not a pure note amongst them and no concept at all about how bad they are! I stopped singing years ago because I can`t sing, but even I was not as bad as any of them them, and I say that myself! Why the hell do these people do this? Why do others clap them? It is beyond me! Skipy P.S. there is another session tommorrow night! |

Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Sorcha Date: 27 Oct 07 - 07:33 PM It's the way of the World, Dave. All drunks think they can sing. I hate karaoke! I don't sing either. I'm probably worse than all of them! |

Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Big Al Whittle Date: 27 Oct 07 - 08:47 PM Karaoke is all right. I think we should provide backing tracks for everybody at folk clubs. And then as the intro played we could play, 'I'll name that tune in seven' And if we get it right, we get let off listening to it.... It would sort of microwave these long ballads. The Japanese also invented origami/sushi, where you get your fish and chips in newspaper that's been folded up to look like a flower. They have much to teach us. |
Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Little Hawk Date: 27 Oct 07 - 09:23 PM You have no idea. ;-) They could teach you quite a bit about a healthy diet too, and a good sense of aesthetics when it comes to things like gardening and house decoration. Then too, they make great automobiles. I wish I could say that about the UK, which once made great automobiles...a long time ago. |
Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Mickey191 Date: 27 Oct 07 - 09:56 PM What were they (Japanese) thinking with this: Restaurants started serving food in small toilet bowl shaped dishes. The next innovation was to have the customers sit on non-functioning toilet bowls facing the counters. Saw it on the news about a month ago. One wonders what will be next? |

Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 Oct 07 - 04:36 AM So why do people get so anal about the imagined failings of singers in folk clubs? But yes, karaoke can be pretty crap. |

I realise up North, we're not as broad minded and sexually adventurous as in more sophisticated parts of the country. But I'm not ready for that yet. Your response leaves me stunned. I'm sorry if I led you on. |
Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: goatfell Date: 28 Oct 07 - 07:02 AM mind you some of the people in the charts today can't really sing but then we all can sing, sometimes it's out tune or rubbish but it's still singing. Tom |
Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Ernest Date: 28 Oct 07 - 08:22 AM It must have been really bad since you put this thread in the non-musical section.... There are 4 japanese words for ritual suicide: Seppuku, Harakiri, Kamikaze and Karaoke. ;0) Ernest |
Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: wysiwyg Date: 28 Oct 07 - 08:38 AM Well, maybe karaoke singers can't sing, but by God! they usually can drink. :~) As do the people who clap them. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Little Hawk Date: 28 Oct 07 - 09:42 AM I've seen some bloody awful karaoke in Canada too, let me tell you. Just tragically and horrifyingly awful. One time the Orillia Folk Society set up a show at some hotel north of town on the highway. The hotel owner thought it would be great to have some live music, but it turned out that what he had in mind was not quite along the lines of folk music. He grew more and more restless. What he really wanted was a karaoke night, it turned out. He asked if anyone could play some Elvis. Fortunately, I managed to pull a genuine Elvis song out of the hat and play it, and that helped smooth the waters....but it was the last time we ever tried to do a folk night at that place. ;-) Richard and weelittle....great repartee, lads! LOL! I love weelittle's last response on the matter... |

Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: treewind Date: 28 Oct 07 - 12:33 PM I was at the Middleton Bell in deepest Suffolk (England, UK) last night. There was a big session there and it was full of people who could both drink and sing and did lots of both. Including the landlord who gave us a song right at the end of the evening. Much better than Karaoke! Anahata |
Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 Oct 07 - 01:00 PM Damn, Al, we could have done a country song about it - you know, that Johnny Cash one - "and it burned, burned burned....." Except that I don't sing country. |

Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Richard Bridge Date: 28 Oct 07 - 04:31 PM All right, I confess, I do sing "Love has no pride". Preferably playing my late wife's Hagstrom. And my dog died (the Great Dane) recently. But I have no hungry children, no crop in the fields (and I'd never marry a woman named after a lavatory deodorant anyway - you know the one I mean, Loo-seal), I don't ride the rodeo and I haven't got a Chevy pickup. I haven't got cancer or TB and I never slept with my best friend's wife. Can I sing something relevant to England instead? |

Subject: RE: BS: it is hell! they cannot sing! From: Lonesome EJ Date: 28 Oct 07 - 10:02 PM I like Karaoke. I don't really mind when people can't carry a tune, either. And I think the drunks who applaud them are expressing human kindness, which is too frequently inevident in the world today. One of the most affecting vocal performances I have ever seen was by a middleaged woman who sang "I Will Alway Love You" completely out of tune, tears running down her cheeks. She meant it, which is more than I can say for a lot of professional musicians I have heard. So my advice to Skipy is to have a couple of drinks. Maybe the alcohol will help kill the bug you've got up your butt. Then get up there and sing "Hound Dog". |
