You betcha. Not only that, but it is well known that fat people fart more, and methane is a greenhouse gas.

And they sweat more, and it's a well-known fact that CO2 just pours out of the sweat glands when people sweat. So as the globe warms (what a neat name for a soap opera!) there will be more sweat, and hence more CO2.

I don't see how this cycle can be broken unless we somehow slip the chain off the pedal crank. Or something.

The only REAL thing I know about methane gas is that it is explosive`between concentrations of 5% and 15%. That`s important to me because outside those parameters it can go BOOM when there`s a spark. Inside those limits, it`s not a real worry.

OMG! it MUST be true - it's in The Daily Mash

'The study also found that rising obesity has increased public transport fuel consumption by 50%, thanks to modern commuters weighing the same as three Aladdin Sane-era David Bowies.

Professor Brubaker added; "A fume-belching Austin Allegro taking a hollow-cheeked family to a shit-ridden campsite in Whitby is far greener than ramming four fat arses into a plane and then flinging it towards a vomit-soaked fortnight in Orlando.'

Rapair commented,

it's a well-known fact that CO2 just pours out of the sweat glands when people sweat. That's "a well-known fact"?

Never heard it before, from anyone. What's the basis for (a) the statement of fact and (b) the well-knownness?

Flatulance by humans contributes 1,000,000 times more gases than livestock.

Authority? None, I just like to create statistics.

Appearance: colourless odourless gas
Melting point: -182 C
Boiling point: -164 C
Vapour density:
Vapour pressure:
Density: 0.717 g/l at 20 C.
Flash point: -221 C
Explosion limits: 5 - 15%
Autoignition temperature: 537 C
Water solubility: slight (35 ml/l at 20 C)

In the event I didn't make myself clear, methane will go BOOM between concentrations of 5 and 15 percent. The choice one has in some situations is to get the concentration over 15% or under 5%.

Thanks, Richard.

Right. It's a very useful debating technique. ;-)

Say, it seems that the sun is going into the quietest phase seen since 1913. NO sunspots! And a drop in the solar wind. This suggests that "global warming" may very shortly turn into global cooling, in which case we'll all have something brand new to worry about, Al Gore will be quite annoyed, and obese people will have their day in the sun (so to speak).

Gawd - I wish that gift had gone to Seamus - silent but deadly. I have to keep a candle burning in the room when he's there - it supposedly burns out the gases, but I don't think it's working too well.

LOL

I had a friend who owned a dog like that, Jacqui. We be talkin' wash the walls and repaint when Mister--the dog--let it rip. I must admit he was terrible to be around at times. I once watched him fart in his sleep. The odor must have awakened him. Not knowing where it came from he gave three or four of us a dirty look and left the room. He had verve. I was often tempted to put a cork in his ass but I figured that even if I could get one in there without waking him, when he DID ket one go the cork might cause bodily injury to bystanders, so I let it go.

Great stats so far.

Keep it up. We have to come to some sort of conclusion on whether obesity does contribute to global warming.

We should be concerned.

As to dogs ... well ... once we get through this we can then start the analyse of obese canines who have dredful flatulence.

Regarding the points made in the article:
1. Fat people don't necessarily eat more than thin people
2. I am female and don't fart unless I am completely alone
3. I know just as many lazy thin people as I do overweight people

So they can all kiss my fat ass. :-)

I figure there's a limit to the size of anal sphincters (notwithstanding various political figures, usually those who belong to parties one doesn't like). That said, here is how we all can help.

Folks, this is NOT a laughing matter. For example, we have some lovely Mudcat ladies who fart, but no so's anyone would notice. They are demure and discreet. Then there's the guys--I will no go so far as to name any single individual like uh, say, just by way of example, S#AW! !

Sorry, S#AW, that slipped out. (Uh, allow me to rephrase that.)

Anyway, here's a pic of a useful device for when ya hit the age of say uh 61.
This device is useful if you are NOT 100% sure it's a fart on the way. That's right, folks. Inexpensive bicycle clips for one's pant leg(s). No longer be the brunt of bad jokes and unfortunate surprises. Give new meaning to the term 'shake a leg'.

The originally cited article is WRONG, WRONG-HEADED, and deliberately counter to official policies which have declared that "carbon sequestering" is a promising answer to atmospheric contamination.

Obese people are quite efficient sequestration devices, blotting up all kinds of carbon-bearing compounds and components - accumulating and storing them until they can be safely placed in permanent storage away from where the stored contaminants can be released to the atmosphere at rates exceeding the capacity of natural processes to accomodate them.

Any person with proper concern for the atmosphere and environment should immediately approach the next "fat person" encountered, and offer a sincere and convincing "THANK YOU" for the service they are providing. (It will not be necessary, and might be unsafe, to attempt to explain the purpose of your "thanks." A quick smile and immediate departure is in order.)

John

Just a minute !! Obese people contribute very little to global warming !! We (I am now older and now a bit more overweight than I was before) don't go running around doing marathons and making more CO2 with our heavy breathing or incresed heat by sweating. We don't use gyms, saving the pollution caused by manufacturing of such machinery. We (the obese) may become house bound and so save on our carbon footprints by not going out and burning fossil fuels. We the obese use less indoor heating to keep warm thus saving energy and reducing global warming. We the obese who will become the severely obese are saving fellow humans from increasing their carbon footprint by taking up TWO seats on trains, buses, planes etc, thus removing or blocking the need for your journey. We fart only the same as you but due to our obeseness it creeps silently and often filtered from our super sized glutiie muscles. We the obese will outweigh the rest of you soon, so beware !!

From: artbrooks

An apropos ditty from that infamous Mudcatter, Seamus Kennedy:

My father came here from Ireland,
He was quiet but they said that he was wise.
He and Mother did their best, gave us a home and all the rest,
But to talk to us he never had the time.
Sure, he'd say "Pass the butter." or, "Come here, young man."
Or, "Keep quiet." or, "No you can't have a dime."
Until the day when I was leavin' when
Dad finally found a reason
For sharing his philosophy of life...

He said: "A monkey fart should smell like a banana,
English farts should smell like cups of tea;
The farting of a fairy should be very light and airy,
When a father farts I hope you'll think of me.

An Irish fart should always lilt with laughter,
It should melt your heart and melt your shorts as well,
A lion's fart should roar with power,
Cuckoos should fart every hour,
A nun's fart should have meaning but no smell;
A strong man's fart should sound out like a trumpet,
A pretty girl's should barely even squeak,
But the person you can trust is the one who'd rather bust
Than ever let one rip right on the street..."

Well, from my old man this really was an earful,
I tried to understand just what he meant;
His words were primitive but strong so I wouldn't get them wrong,
He was saying to be careful as I went.

He was saying to be happy as I could be,
He was saying watch my step and as I pass,
To beware who I look up to, and whatever else I might do,
Know that most of what you get from folks is just escaping gas...
He said: "A monkey fart etc..."

methinks the problem to both (and probably the cause) is choice.

we have so much choice. Our food is blander than bland so we lard it with strong flavours, therefore the food has to be bland to not spoil these larded flavours. Just try a chicken without the larding and you will know.
And our ablutions smell and taste foodier than our food.
And I see special water from Hawaii, and most people don't know the difference between spring water and mineral water but the shelves in suermarkets run to greater volume than the infinitely more necessary milk shelves.

and choice gives us a population size that is unsustainable.

Anyone got a solution for that?

Well, you could choose between universal famine when the oil runs out and there is no fuel to power the ships, trains and trucks that move food from one place to another, or death by water deprivation when global warming causes all of the fresh water sources to dry up, but enough thread drift...let's get back to farts.

EVERYTHING causes global warming - except Royalty, Government Ministers and the Bishop of London, of course. Does anyone read the Guardian Green Section where we've had:-
1. A young man who is proud he doesn't drive but rather cycles and walks everywhere: he's 15.
2. A woman who's an environmentalist and whose guilty secret is flying around the world talking about it.
3. A man who has married a woman from South America and feels guilty about flying to see her family.
4. A man who's so concerned about his dead batteries he's considering flying to Germany to dispose of them.
5. Etc, etc
And the Independent is no better: on a front page it bewailed the increasing CO2 output and at the same time bewailed the decreasing birthrate.
When there's less hypocricy, I might just believe it.

from Allan Sherman:

I would like to explain how it came to pass that I got fat.

Ladies and gentlemen, I got fat as a public service.

When I was a child, my mother said to me,
"Clean the plate, because children are starving in Europe."
And I might point out that that was years before the Marshall Plan
was ever heard of.
So I would clean the plate, four, five, six times a day.
Because somehow I felt that that would keep the children from starving
in Europe.

But I was wrong. They kept starving. And I got fat.

So I would like to say to every one of you who is either skinny
or in some other way normal--
When you walk out on the street, and you see a fat person,
Do not scoff at that fat person. Oh no!
Take off your hat. Hold it over your heart.
Lift your chin up high. And in a proud, happy voice say to him,
"Hail to thee, fat person!
You kept us out of war

Of course................the answer has just come to me in a flash! (No.not as I was flashing!) If we collected all the farts in pressurised containers we could use them to drive wind turbines and thus reduce global warming and save energy. Imagine a network of fart filled tubes across the country all directed to a set of wind farms in various locations. Farting would become a patriotic and conservational thing to do. We could get a reduction in our energy bills, the more farts produced the cheaper the electricity. Whole fields could be given over to growing onions and beans.......

The mind boggles................well mine obviously does !
