So much talk of a dry 2006 already. Can anyone really see that far ahead through the clouds ?

Well, the Anchorage, Alaska area has had a number of wild fires already. And that's not even mentioning the dry conditions in the lower 48.

It has been a pretty rotten start to the summer here in Köln, but it will improve England's chances in the World Cup if summer does not appear until July.

In Chesham, Bucks (UK) it's raining and my little pond is full to the brim. So clearly all this talk of a drought is poppycock.

In Surrey, now, there is a drought. But it's the fault of all the Surrey inhabitants for changing their climate with their unthinking behaviours. I was wise, and I'm all right.

I am heartened by the memory of '76, when it snowed here (S Yorks UK) on the first Monday in June. By the following Saturday we had the start of a pleasant heatwave that lasted into September. And our reservoirs are full(ish)

Not in large and continuous amounts Giok, but we had no snow, even in the mountains, and the springs rains were entirely absent. The Rio Grande now has stretches that are miles long where it is completely dry. The fire season started early and will be bad.

Here in Vancouver its been raining off and on for over a week. Grey skies and wind, too. The only consolation is that it is so green and lush that when the sun finally breaks through it will be gorgeous! The gardens are amazing.

The contrast in temperature will also mean that the sun will feel unbearably hot. Vancouver is famous for its on again, off again weather. The old saying around here is, "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes."

Water restrictions in place June through September here in my North Texas village. In the low 90s lately. Summer has been here for a while, and we're just to the right of Artbrooks on the map, and have also been really short of rain. Gardens aren't doing well again this year. I'm going to make a point of watering a patch of grass for the dogs out back--it was really hard on them to have just dry dirt and blowing straw that was once the lawn last fall. (They're outdoor dogs, 24/7.)

There was some chap on British TV recently, and he was using some German WW2 method for predicting the weather. He reckons that, around June 15th, the weather will really improve, and then the UK will experience the 9th best summer in the last 100 years. Hope he's got it right!

Will you yanks please tradein your SUVs, turn down the heating systems and turn off the airconditioners. Lets all go renewable and turn back the tide of global weather change.

Me bloody teeth are chattering and its almost JUNE.

will all this rain improve England's chances of winning the world cup.....?

that's a tough one, al.

I believe not. Germany will win. they always have a good team and being the home side is a definite advantage.

there's optimism and there's desperation....having seen the atmosphere in Cologne, and presumably thing are hotting up even more than when I was there. I can appreciate your situation.

but you need some British phlegm, in this situation. if anything good happens - it will be a nice surprise. But don't waste any money betting on a surprise.

But we've had alot of off and on rain. But then again, that's normal for Pittsburgh.

Again, sorry for interrupting your conversation.

[I feel like saying "Carry on, old chaps." But on second thought that sentence seems to me to be a bad American version of how we think British people talk. And you know how much I detest stereotypes. So I won't say it. Oh I just did, didn't I? My bad.]

Here in Ohio River valley area Ohio we're working on our third day in a row of +90 degree temps.......and before that several days of just below 90. This is above our average high at this time of year of 76......in other words, WAY TOO DAMN HOT!!!

We're shipping it all toward Azizi.

Next door to Heathrow airport today it's sunny (for a change) but the wind is still strong and chilly. A bit of warmer weather wouldn't come amiss right now, after all it's nearly June and I still need some heating on the boat at night.

'Giok', "Pawnshop on the corner"- is that also part of the British stereotype?

Bars on every corner is a part of the stereotype of urban Black American communities. And like other stereotypes, aren't true.

Point well taken.

And Spaw, thank you very much but you don't have to ship hot weather to Pittsburgh. Yesterday was 92 degrees without any rain-will wonders never cease. And today the weatherman {Opps! the weather person} is predicting only slightly lower temperatures but we're supposed to get afternoon showers...

So what else is new?

It also "aren't" true that all Black people speak or write "bad" grammatical English.

I blame that "aren't" in my last post on the rush to get to work on time.

"Cheerio!" and enjoy the weather wherever you is.

Hello!

Well, actually I'm not due to work until 9:30 AM and it only takes me 15 minutes to get to where I gotta go today, so I'm outa here after this post.

You asked what I attribute this warm weather to [I was raised during the times when you weren't supposed to end a sentence with a preposition. But it seems to fit there, so times change and grammar rules may change to keep up with the times]..
I'm not sure folks outside of the USA got the opportunity to see a Christmas cartoon that featured the brothers HeatMiser & ColdMiser {or some such name]. That cartoon had some great jingle type songs like this one:

I'm Mister HeatMiser
I'm Mr. Sun
I'm Mister HeatMiser
I'm Mister hundred and one.
Friends call me HeatMiser
Whatever I touch
Starts to melt in my clutch.
I'm too much.
-snip-

[For some reason, though it has been a number of years since I last saw this cartoon, I remember the HeatMiser's song and not his brother's].

Well, anyway HeatMiser and his brother ColdMiser were battling in the sky over what type of weather there would be for Christmas. HeatMiser didn't want there to be snow and of course ColdMiser wanted a lot of snow. Of course, at the end of that cartoon, ColdMiser won.

All of that to say that I think HeatMiser is responsible for the unseasonably hot weather that some parts of the world are getting right now.
And that's that!

;o)

PS: Mingulay at work-I hope they're not working you too hard.

As to turning pawnshops into estate agents- in the USA "estate agents" are people who manage estates. I assume that in Great Britain that term means the building where those people work, right?

If so, that's another example of the meaning of English words being different in different English speaking nations.

"There's a pawnshop on the corner
In Pittsburgh Pennsylvania..."

Forgotten the rest, I guess. But in the '50s it was briefly a popular song, Azizi.

"But I ain't got a thing left to hock..."

"She was peaches, she was honey..."

"If you should meet ... and ask her tonight for a date
She'll tell you somewhere there's a rich millionaire
And he's calling for her about 8:00"

Memory. Humph.

This part of New England (New Hampshire) just went from cold and raining to hot and humid.

At least it's not snowing. (But I think we skipped a season between last week and yesterday.)

Another year when it's too early to get things planted right up until it's too late. Sigh.

Here's the words to that Pittsburgh pawnshop song:

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA
Written by Bob Merrill
performed by Guy Mitchell

Peaked at # 4 in 1952

(There's a pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
And I walk up and down 'neath the clock
(By the pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
But I ain't got a thing left to hock

She was peaches, she was honey, and she cost me all my money
'cause a whirl 'round the town was her dream (was her dream)
Took her dancin', took her dinin' till her blue eyes were shinin'
With the sights that they never had seen (never seen)
If you should run into a golden-haired angel
And ask her tonight for a date
She'll tell you somewhere there's a rich millionaire
Who is calling again about eight

(There's a pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
And I've just gotta get five or ten (five or ten)
(From the pawnshop on a corner in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania)
Gotta be with my angel again

http://ww.lyricsdepot.com/guy-mitchell/pittsburgh-pennsylvania.html

-snip-

I betcha that 2/3rds of the people in Pittsburgh nowadays have never heard of this song. I know I didn't...

Somewhat off subject -Me talking to myself "who me??" "Yeah you".
...composer Stephen Foster's home is about 4 minutes from where I live, but hardly anyone knows it's there. And few Pittsburghers in general even know that Stephen Foster lived in Pittsburgh. That strikes me as wrong, even though I have mixed feelings about some-actually most- of Stephen Foster's songs.

But sorry.. that's tooo far off topic.

How's this:
It's gettin hot in here and I don't have any air conditioning.
It's gonna be a long hot summer.

Azizi, they work me periodically and seem to pay me less often. I should have qualified my post estate agents here handle what you call real estate. They sell houses for exorbitant fees using sales techniques that would shame a fairground hustler and all belong to a sort of bricks and mortar mafia.

I have stayed out of their clutches by living on a boat.

It's now midnight and gone cold again.

I think (if I correctly understand the American usage) that "estate agent" (England) = "realtor" (US) - but the estate agent does not have a function as escrow agent. Scotland is different because its laws are different.

Not in Juneau, Alaska, by normal standards. It's been chilly (in the 50s and low 60s most of the summer) and VERY wet.

On the other hand, I'll take our summer over just about anywhere south of here. It has been HOT most places.

The heat wave we were experiencing here in north Texas broke a couple of weeks ago, when we had a nice rainy day with a gentle rain all day long. It soaked in and now all of the lawns are green again, whether they were watered or not all summer. I suspect there are more than a few of us wondering if we can get a fall crop in now.
