It is a continuing sad chapter we'rt living through because we've learned how susceptible our population is to, and I'm gonna skip the long words here, BS.

In the words of The Music Man, we're "sadder but wiser".

Found in the Comments on an ElReg article:

We all know US does not take lightly the insubordination of their allies.

A famous US statesman once said, it may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal.

Before you get in bed with an elephant, remember it may roll over in the night.

PS: Any ideas who said statesman was, folks?

Here is the complete quote, from William F. Buckley's "United Nations Journal" (1974):

"Kissinger said [to me]'that is probably an objective of [Clark] Clifford to depose Thieu before Nixon is inaugurated [in 1973]. Word should be gotten to Nixon that if Thieu meets the same fate as Diem, the word may go out to the nations of the world that it may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal.'"

Without context, the quote is misleading. Note the specific situation, "probably," "if," and "may," and that Thieu was not deposed.

.... so the word in question seems to have got to Nixon in time, and Tricky Dicky heeded it. For this alone, methinks Kissinger *did* deserve that Peace Prize after all. Strange are the ways of diplomacy.

Snopes investigates and concludes that it is likely to have been Kissinger but note the last paragraph:

"The attribution to Kissinger originated with the conservative editor, author and United Nations delegate William F. Buckley Jr., who said Kissinger made the comment during a November 1968 phone call between the pair.

"No audio recording of the phone call existed. Despite there being no way to definitively confirm that Kissinger expressed the thought using that exact phrasing during the phone call, all available historical evidence pointed to him as likely the person who originated the words. Decades-old newspaper articles — including a 1974 piece that Buckley, who died at the age of 82 in 2008, authored — attributed the quote to Kissinger. Kissinger, who died in 2023, never refuted the attribution.

"A representative for Kissinger's official website did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Until then, Snopes is withholding a definitive truth rating."

It's going to be fun watching his reaction to not getting the Nobel peace prize today :-D

Will he now declare war on Norway?

Or call for the prosecution and imprisonment of the woman who won it.

There's a video making the rounds now of two ICE officers trying to arrest a man in Chicago - he put up a struggle and enough neighbors honked and interfered they finally gave up and sped off. We need them to stop trying, but if they do, this was a good outcome.

I find it ironic that the winner was Venezuelan considering that the turnip has been blowing up Venezuelan boats.

The most ironic aspect is that Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy,' the academy said."

[Note: In my opinion that is the exact opposite of what Trump has been trying to achieve.]

"'In the past year, Ms Machado has been forced to live in hiding,' said Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel committee.

"'Despite serious threats against her life, she has remained in the country, a choice that has inspired millions.'

"'When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognise courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist.'

"The committee chose to focus on Venezuela at this time, in a year dominated by Mr Trump's repeated public statements that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

"Ahead of the announcement, experts on the award had said Mr Trump would not win it as he is dismantling the international world order the Nobel committee cherishes."

...

[What surprises me is that Ms Machado thanked Trump]

"'We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy.

"'I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!'"

"The United Nations human rights office welcomed the award to Ms Machado as a recognition of 'the clear aspirations of the people of Venezuela for free and fair elections'.

"Mr Maduro's government routinely targeted its real or perceived opponents ahead of last year's presidential election.

"Ms Machado was set to run against Mr Maduro, but the government disqualified her.

"Edmundo González took her place. He had never run for office before. The lead-up to the election saw widespread repression, including disqualifications, arrests and human rights violations.

"The crackdown on dissent only increased after the country's National Electoral Council, which is stacked with Maduro loyalists, declared him the winner despite credible evidence to the contrary.

"The election results announced by the council sparked protests across the country, to which the government responded with force and ended with more than 20 people dead."

...

[Then the White House jumped into the ring with these comments.]

"Following the announcement, the White House criticised the decision not to award Mr Trump.

"'The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,' White House spokesperson Steven Cheung said on X.

"'President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives.

"'He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.'"

[Again, the exact opposite of Trump reality, IMHO.]

Trump now has the data on every voter in every state. If he suspects any voter interference, he could order the military to seize every ballot box and adjust the returns for what he considers to be a free and fair election. He ordered the military to take the ballot boxes two elections ago, but was blocked.

Putin shared his secret with Trump that voters do not determine elections; it is who counts the votes that matters most.

And down(under) here it is Centre. LOL

One thing we can celebrate - or maybe not - is:

Trump remains in 'exceptional health', doctor's note says after check-up

"In short: A medical evaluation has found US President Donald Trump is in good health ahead of his planned trip to the Middle East.

"Doctor Sean Barbabella says Mr Trump's cardiac age is about 14 years younger than his chronological age.

"The president also received preventative health screenings and immunisations ahead of his trip."

...

"'Trump remains in exceptional health, exhibiting strong cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and physical performance,' Sean Barbabella said in the memo, which was made out to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt."

...

That's if you can believe the statement of a doctor hired by Trump. I mean, it couldn't possibly be Fake News could it??!! :-D

Psychologists have a name for a perverse lie that seems to become normalized. The term is called 'malignant formality'.

I have always denounced malignant formality and will continue to do so despite censorship or increased acceptance of the repeated lie.

The moral compass is an often used term being used lately. Trump distorts the very idea of a moral compass. I will discuss what the moral compass means to various people later.

Compass pointing to magnetic versus true north - Trump's magnetic attraction is a bank account somewhere.

Netanyahu had the opportunity to accept the exact same "peace" offer last year, when Biden's folks hammered it out, but Netanyahu is not interested in working with Democrats. So these many more months of death and carnage are on him.

The commonly accepted difference between Maryland and its neighbor, Virginia, recognizes that Maryland has life-preserving, life-saving, and life-enhancing policies, while Virginia has military life-taking technologies. Maryland has; the foremost DNA lab, NIH, JPL, Johns Hopkins, and more. Virginia has the Pentagon, DARPA, biowar labs, Quantico, and weapons factories. To be fair, Maryland also has level four bio labs.

The moral compass seems to be different for each state. Trump has determined that democrats are involved in life-giving, employment, and disproportionately fires them. Health and Human Services gets the ax, but soldiers and ICE do not.

If I could pick the brains of Stilly River Sage... Does the Trump Gaza peace deal resemble a real estate deal rather than a statesmanlike approach to fairness? Do you think Trump still wants a Gaza shore resort and casino real estate gift as part of his deal?

I'm sure the land deal is in the back of his mind - and that of Jared Kushner who is being deployed to the region again.

One morning a week I end up listening to a conservative am radio station that hosts a garden show I have followed for years. One of the ads this morning was about a new book with a forward written by Charlie Kirk. It sounds like they view the existing population in Gaza and Palestine as vermin.

On a point of order, and to clear up the apparent confusion, a book has a foreword, not ‘forward’.

No thanks necessary (nor anticipated). ;-)

You needed a "Pedant alert" there. But you're correct. No red squiggly appeared so the spelling wasn't wrong and there is no syntax monitor in this browser.

Look up Dinesh D'Souza, another conspiracy theorist big on that radio network. He has a book coming out that will no doubt throw more fuel into the right wing fires.

There are overarching issues that impact everyone, and in the US it would seem that a strong Democracy, supporting the Constitution, social services that extend to all are universal, but they aren't. And while you can look at the general population and see Democrats and Republicans and there are generalities about the racial makeup of the parties and the religious leanings of the parties, the GOP folks seem to right now be all about restoring old white men to power. They perhaps feel that all EuroAmericans should join them. Looking beyond the racial makeup and aiming for a better support system, eventually ending up with universal health care, universal child care, things that float all boats isn't what they're interested in. It's all about who has the money and can keep it. So the Black, Hispanic, and Asian folks who are stridently for Trump stand out as working against their own best interests, because Trump doesn't give a rat's ass about them.

One man’s (or woman’s) ‘pedantry’ is another man’s (or woman’s) ‘attention to detail’. Having worked fifty years in a profession where ‘attention to detail’ is an essential trait, I feel no shame, and I’m not about to change.

As my first boss told me many times, “Standards, young man, standards matter! And IMHO he was right.

This is a long article but there are some very pointed accusations in it. One of the key journalists is Oz's very trusted and reliable John Lyons, who was told off by Trump at a recent press conference for asking questions about Trump's financial conflicts with the Presidency.

Donald Trump accused of profiting from presidency as crypto ventures rake in hundreds of millions

...

"Donald Trump's wealth, and that of his family, is skyrocketing.

"Trump says he has stepped back from his business ventures since taking office, and his interests are now held in trust by his sons.

"But critics say he is operating like no president has before, mixing business and politics in a way that may violate the US Constitution and threaten the very foundations of American democracy.

"His links to a plethora of business activities and cryptocurrency ventures have opened him up to accusations of conflicts of interest and profiting from the presidency."
