The best vacations include:

A large body of water
A beach
The right number of people
No cell phones
No electronics
The musical instrument of your choice
One or two good books - the kind made from paper
No socks to wear
No neckties to wear
And just the right amount of beverages of choice

OR

A large city of an historical nature
Public transport
Museums
Live theater
A great local foods to enjoy
One special person to enjoy them with.

OR

A quiet village with a good pub, a grocer, and a weekly singaround
A self-catering unit of some sort
A motorway or train nearby (but not too nearby) so that, should you wish to, you can take a day trip elsewhere
No or few scheduled activities (this is critical)

OR

Me, alone, in the bog country of Kent County, New Brunswick in a travel trailer (caravan) for six weeks with the nearest human at least 15km away. Just me and the moose and deer and bears and partidge and... sky. It was amazing. If I win the big Lotto THAT is where I am going on my next vacation. Been over 25 years since I had a vacation.

OR:- A 'campement' in Senegal (small hut withour electricity, water to wash in from the well...) trips to nearby villages, hearing Wolof spoken, traditional drumming, dancing and singing. Mass on Easter Day with trad. instruments and chorus. Watching snakes, lizards, butterflies like bright jewels on the red earth. Women with huge loads on their heads, brilliantly coloured dresses, hot hot sunshine. Bliss!

Well, for me, the best vacations have always included lighthouses. I've done both coasts of the U.S., much of the Gulf coast, and three of the five Great Lakes. I've had to go way off the beaten path to find many lighthouses, and that has taken me to some marvelous places. Two of the best were Peninsula Point Light on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, that was covered with monarch butterflies; and Dry Tortugas National Park, a 75-mile seaplane ride west of Key West, Florida.
