This week in Alabama an 83 year old man, Walter Moody, who had spent 22 years on death row, was executed by lethal injection, for sending a lethal mail bomb to a judge back in 1989.

Definitely a record for the USA. Pretty certainly a world record too. Not for the length of time on death row before being executed - that stands at at least 33 years. But there are a few who've been on death row longer than that, so that might well be broken. The same could apply to oldest - the oldest man on death row was 94, but then he went and died without needing any lethal injections...

Not everyone here is thrilled with the reputations of various states regarding their robust execution programs.

New Hampshire has one guy on death row. We have no execution facility. Laws in other states are occasionally yee-haw-knuckle-dragger spawned, and don't have as much to do with justice as "we-gonna-kill-yer-sorry-ass". I'd guess Alabama is one of those states.

Probably there's no need for sympathy, Bonzo - but neither is there any justification for executing an 83-yr-old man, almost thirty years after his crime.
