Subject: add: Cilla Fisher: False Lover Won Back From: GUEST,Guest: Charles Macfarlane Date: 01 Dec 24 - 05:37 AM I have MP3s of some of the tracks from the original CF & AT vinyl recording. Here are the lyrics as best as I can transcribe them: FALSE LOVER WON BACK =================== The sun it shines on yonder hill And low in yonder dell, And the place that me and my love bide The sun it never goes doon! Refrain: Bonny Love! Repeat: The sun it never goes doon! Gae saddle tae me the bonny black steed, Or saddle tae me the broon, That I may ride o'er aroon, bonny Love! That I may ride o'er aroon! Refrain: Bonny Love! Repeat: That I may ride o'er aroon! But when will ye come back, Bonny Love? When will ye come hame? When heather hills are nine times brunt, And a' grown green again! But that's o'er lang to bide awa', That's o'er lang frae hame, And the baby that's nae born yet Will be o'er lang wantin' it's name! He's mounted on his high horse back, And fast awa rade he; She's kilted up her gae clothing, And fast, fast folleed she! Noo the firsten toon that they've cam til, He's bocht her some hose and shoen, And he's bad her rue, and return noo, And nae mare follee him! But it's love for love that I do want, Love for love, again, An' it's hard when I like ye sae weel, An' ye nae me again! The neexten toon that they cam til, He's bocht a brooch and ring, And he's bad her rue, and return noo, And nae mare follee him! But it's love for love that I do want, Love for love, again, An' it's hard when I like ye sae weel, An' ye nae me again! So the neexten toon that they cam til, He's bocht her a waddin' ring, An' he's bad her dry her rosy cheeks, An' he would tak her wi' him! Now it's love for love that I hae got, Love for love, again, So it's turn yer high horse heed about, And we will ride for hame! [Presumed trad, from the singing of Cilla Fisher] |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Cilla Fisher: False Lover Won Back From: GUEST,Charles Macfarlane Date: 01 Dec 24 - 01:32 PM Note that there's a version of this song, but to a different tune, on Malinky's "Three Ravens" album, dating from the line-up with Karine Polwart. The album's sleeve notes on the song read: "The False Lover Won Back (words & music : trad arr. Malinky) Karine set the lyrics to the pipe march "Mary's Dream", which she learned from ace piper Mike Katz. The lyrics she found in the Grieg-Duncan collection (which inspired our first album "Last Leaves"). And when she finally checked out Cilla & Artie's version of "Billy Taylor" (thanks to Steve being at Mark's house, seeing Mark's fiancée Islay's Mum's bloke Dave's record collection - follow?!) she found this song on the same album (learned from Jimmy Hutchison of South Uist). Spooky! Thanks to them for singing good songs in the first place. Thanks also to Harry F. from Sparks, Nevada." I prefer C&A's version of the tune, though. My only gripe about that and the earlier "Last Leaves" Malinky albums is the fact that they changed the tunes of a number of well known traditional songs - "False Lover Won Back", "The Rovin' Ploughboy", and "The Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie" - and, while their tunes are fine and well arranged and harmonised, simply I prefer the originals that I've known from my earliest childhood. Despite this, they are my favourite Malinky albums, as well as my favourite of any albums featuring Karine - it was literally a very creative and harmonious line-up. |
Subject: RE: ADD: Cilla Fisher: False Lover Won Back From: Bearheart Date: 03 Dec 24 - 01:26 PM Thanks Susan for verifying- I had trouble finding it there. At this point putting it in the search hasn't been working for me- I guess I have to do searches by letter listing. Charles, I am familiar with the Malinky version as well... Malinky and Karine are also favorites with me. |
Subject: RE: ADD: Cilla Fisher: False Lover Won Back From: Bearheart Date: 03 Dec 24 - 01:44 PM In looking at the 2 versions I now have, thanks to kind people here, the verses remain the same, but with different refrains. Like you, Charles I tend to cleave to the songs I learned when I was young. I was fortunate to spend some time with Cilla and her sister Ray in the 1990s, when they spent time in the States. I have fond memories. Ray taught Ballads at Scottish Week at the Augusta Heritage Arts Workshops back then, and she was great fun and a great teacher. |
