Hi folks,

We're getting ready for more U.S. Civil War programs, and would like to add a few tunes, popular during the period, but not specifically tied to the war. Does anyone know any thing about any of these? Or do you have some suggestions?

Niel Gow Saddle the Pony Blackberry Quadrille Devlin's Jamie Allen Galway Bells Farewell to Whiskey Batchelder's Salamanca Hunter's Purse Ross's Reel Kitty McGee Hundred Pipers Mountain Ranger Turnpike Side Tobin's Favorite My Home Mari's Wedding Jig: Apples in Winter Tarbolton-Reel Westphalia Waltz Avalon Quickstep Hull's Victory (was popular during War of 1812)

Thanks very much!

Beth

Why not use some of the tunes played by the band that entertained the spectators watching the slaughter at the Battle of Gettysburg?
These included Mockingbird; Palmyra Schottische; Freischutz Quick Step; The Port Royal Galop; Nightingale Waltz; Hail To The Chief; Hail Columbia.
Other popular tunes included Juanita; Lulu's Gone; Tramp, Tramp; Carry Me Back to Old Virginny; We are Coming, Father Abraham; Tenting Tonight on The Old Camp Ground; Goober Peas; When Johnny Comes Marching Home; The Yellow Rose of Texas; Bonny Blue Flag; Stephen Foster songs; Easter Galop; Cheer, Boys, Cheer; Maryland, My Maryland; Old Hundredth; Luto Quickstep; Storm galop; Dixie; Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming; Garry Owen; St. Patrick's day in the Morning; etc.

Dicho,

Thanks for your suggestions. We have all the Stephen Foster and nearly all of the the tunes whose texts or titles deal specificially with the U.S. CW. The other titles are what really intrigue me at this point. I'm trhinking that folks in Gettysburg may be getting sick of some of those often-played tunes, although I suppose the tourists find them to be part of the battlefield atmosphere. Plus, our group wants to play something besides a CW program. My favorites are earlier Scots, English, Irish and American tunes/songs, in that order. But some of those were still popular, or existed in a different from in the 1860's.

Where did you find documentation of tunes played by the band in Gettysburg? Who were the spectators and where were they? We have various acounts of nurses and other townspeople here during the batle.

I'm reposting my list because it came through without the tune titles being separated. Thanks very much!! Beth

Where did you get the idea there were spectators at Gettysburg? Do you mean First Manassas?
