Hi, folks,

I went to RPI in Troy, NY Friday evening to attend a Scott Alarik concert at Mother's Wine Emporium, reputed to be the oldest college coffeehouse in the U.S. I was impressed to hear that they have been in operation for 30 years! What made me a little sad, though, is that, other than the staff members, precious few in the audience were young people. Mother's is a cozy place w/ small tables, complete w/ candles, drinks & snacks. I enjoyed the concert & picked up Scott's book on the folk music community. At both of Scott's concerts that I've attended, he's mentioned our Art Thieme--promoting his cd, singing a song he learned from him (Shoo-Ri) & re-telling his jokes (oh, my!). I went with my son, so at least we had 2 generations represented. Scott's vocal & instrumental work is very pleasant and his comments on the music are well-worth hearing. His written style far surpasses what one generally sees today. He has a cd,-30-, & his book, Deep Community, consists of interviews & commentary on folk music from his columns in the Boston Globe newspaper. I don't see an Internet site, but his email is Scalarik@aol.com.

best,

bbc

Barbara,

I think Scott went through my posts here and took the jokes he found. The ones he tells on stage are only the ones I posted in 5 or 6 different places. ;-)    I think he figures those were the best ones. Either way, I'm glad to have 'em still traveling around even if I'm not. I figured it was time to quit when all the requests I got from fans were for jokes. ;-)

Thanks for the P.M. !!

Art

Funny, Art! My favorite is, "If we are what we eat, why am I not tall & slim, like a Twinkee?!"

love you,

Barbara

I sang at Mother's Wine Emporium several years ago and drew a very small crowd. They used part of a well-intentioned quote from Sally Rogers about me, saying "Jerry captures the mundane in life." (and brings em back alive, I guess. That same night, Doctor Ruth was talking about sex. I can hear the conversations in the dorms that day... "hmmmm! do we want to go hear some guy who captures the mundane, or ask Dr. Ruth dirty questions about kinky sex?"

I'm surprised I even came...

Jerry

Sigh, Jerry. Yes, I was disappointed at the size of the audience, although they were enthusiastic. As an audience member, I am always disappointed at a small turnout for a performer I think is good. Mother's isn't really set-up for large audiences, though, w/ small tables scattered around the room. Bill Staines is scheduled in November. I wonder what size audience he will get?
