There's a fairly famous painting by Cezanne called "La route montante", translatable as "The Uphill Road". Query: where was it painted?

If I had to guess, it was painted in Aix which is in Southern France... Seems that alot of his later landscapes dealing with "upwardness" were painted there...

The painting in question appears to be at the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia; but the museum gives no information about it that I could find.

Painting titles are often repetitive for a given artist, and sometimes translations aren't too precise, so there could be another with the name(?).

Well, we do know that Cezanne painted quite a lot of landscapes in the 1880's while living in Aix inspired by his view of Mont Sainte-Victoire...

If you follow John's link and click on the painting it says it was painted in 1881. At that time he was in Auvers-sur-Oise and though I can't say for sure it was painted there the houses look more like Oise's than Provence's. We don't have those dark grey, pointed roofs in the South. Our roofs are usually made with red clay tiles, not with slates and they are much flater because we seldom have snow.

Two things: First, my mom draqged me thru every art musuem she could going back to when I was around 4 years old and...

..two, my second degree is is Fine Arts... I know this will come a s surprise but I'm a halfway decent artist, I have lots of original works of art and I have a massive collection of art/art history books...

Okay, I might not understand much else but I know my art... Well, modern art, that is which, IMO began in the later hald of the 1800s...

BTW, IM(most)HO, Cezanne's landscapes leave a little bit to be disired... I've always enjoyed his less private, introspective works that deal with people... His "Bathers" and "The Card Players" are alot more pleasing to this eye...

You remind me and I'll bring you a Bobert "print" to the Getaway that you can take back and hang it in yer livin' room... Kat's got one on her's...

But I donno... Between living now or being an artist back in the 1880s in France??? I mean, yeah, I had the 60's but the impressionists had an entire revolution... Okay, I give the romantics credit... They did their part... They wrestled art (and man) away from the church as being Nurse Ballbuster... But it wasn't until the 1870s that artists said "Screw all this painterly stuff" 'cause there another way...

Hey, I have the upmost respect for classical painters but, geeze louise... Enough friggin Rembrandt's, thank you... They are boring and have no movement... Or life...

When young, the Art Institute of Chicago had a huge and wondrous exhibit of Paul Cezanne. I kept going back for the whole time it was there. It was something I found on my own. Nobody led me to it. It was evident on the surface of it that I was privileged to be in front of those paintings. Go figure.

But I know that curiosity has kept me delving from room to room.

I thought I'd already posted to this last month. Anyway, yes, I do indeed have an exquisite piece of BobertArt...a housewarming gift from several years ago and I treasure it. The subject is a beautiful old bit of architecture in Richmond, a doorway with iron railing in front and a gracious archway...a place which was bulldozed for "progress" the day after Bobert preserved it forever in my piece of BobertArt. Thank you, again, darlin'...if you take any to the Getaway I am sure they will be much appreciated. Ya gotta lot of talent, more in your pinkie than most folks, that's for sure!

Can't belive that ay one time a had 150 prints... I had a "one man show" in the late 80's and I gave them out to the folks who came to it... That still left half od them... Guess they have been chipped away at over the years...

As for portraits??? Back when I was in art school I'd get these nice bound sketch books and fill 'um with sketches of people... Some folks I'd spend more time with than others and they'd end up framable but mostly they were quickies... Of course, in art school, quick is in... When we were drawing from nude models they'd run you thru exercises where ya' had 1 minute, 2 minutes and 5 minutes to draw what you could loosens up yer arms real well on the 1 minute ones...

But I'd find places where people would sit long enough fir me to snag a drawin'... There are thousands of these drawing in those sketch pads... But I have done a few portraits of freinds and given them to them... Mostly charcoal or pencil...

Only drawin' I'm doing these days are engineering drawings for buliding permits...

Master painter??? O donno, Ol'ster... Okay, I've done a couple dozen oil or acrylic paintings and a few are purdy decent but...

...pen and ink is my mah main medium... The print that Kat has and that I'm takin' to Amos and jacqui is of a pen an' ink... Crow quill, to be exact... Very tedius work... And ya' better be carefull 'cause them crow quill have been know to act up and give you a big ol' ink blotch afetr you've spent two or four hours on it and then the piece is ruined...

These days I'd use a rapidograph 'cause they tend to be alot easier to use... Back then I wanted to be a purist...

Bobster, I paint oils mainly ... as long as it is mountains, trees and lakes ... anything else .. I am pretty much useless on portraits. People like my paintings but they don't know art. In reality I suck pretty bad but I enjoy the heck out of it. Like playing guitar ... it is therapy I guess.

Well, you're ahead of me in the art depart. I have an aunt an artist and my Mom is an artist. I'm on again, off again. Too many distractions and other interests. Not enough lifetimes to do all I want to do

But yes, I've had a few classes and have done the speed drawing thing and the "no-looky" exercizes too. Both fun and interesting. When I was a kid I did chalks of surfing and sold them to some of the guys surfing. I did a little poster design but never really went commericial. Same reasons as above. Too much going on. I needed some one to give the the "Jack Palance" secret to life speech as portryed in the film "City Slickers"!

Missed that one...

When I was about 5 years old I was drawing and there was a very accomplished artist in the neighborhood by the name of Will Anderson who worked with me here and there... More encouragement than instruction... But I took drawing and painting classes here and there growing up and by the time I was accepted to VCUs excellent art school I had been involved with art for a long, long, time...

It also didn't hurt that my mom put two very nice prints in my nursery as a baby... One was by Gaughan and the other Paul Klee... I grew up with them... I also lived near DC and my mom would takes me to all the gallaries in town...

Not too sure when it was that I became "an artist" as opposed to a drawer/illistrator/painter... That is something that you really can't teach... You can try but to be an artist is definately a gift from God... Doesn't matter what the medium is... It is a gift... I mean, there are plenty of very good illistrators who, IMHO, aren't artists... Draftsmen??? Yeah... Artist is difference from that...

A fine point of distinction Bobert. I would put Maxfield Parrish as an artist who did illustrations and Thomas Kinkade as an illustrator who thinks he's an artist. That tends to draw a line, so to speak. C.W. Wyeth was an artist and an illustrator as was Rockwell who did both fine art (which you don't often see) and illustration.

I have little truck with those who project or trace from photographs. To me, that's on the level of coloring books. Sorry if that offends anyone but it's just my maybe, not-so-humble opinion.

Love using the Rapidograph pen and those that function like them. Ink fascinates me and I have experimented with my own, well, actually reproducing some of the iron and organic varieties of the past.

Cezanne I love for his bold use of color and topics. Gauguin and Van Gough (extraodinary genius) wonderful. Klee, I'm iffy on, undecided. Dali, in his prime, funny, sarcastic, iconoclastic, just great. Thread drift? You bet. The latter Dali was rather pathetic due to the blood suckers that got a hold on him. At any rate, I love art (static? static visual?) and would like to see some of your work sometime there Bobert!

Klee, unless you've grown up lookin' at one of his works (I call mine "The Clowns" because it is two clowns... I've known they were clowns all my life because I spent so many hours lookin' at it before I was even aware of the concept of lookin' at stuff...) but I can see how he might be difficult... DuBuffet, who I also love, is like that...

BTW... I still have both prints prominently hung in the house...

Dali's "Sacrament of the Last Supper" is the "shits"... I saw it live when I waas around 13 or so and thought it was gorgeous...

So before you even get there now that I know that you know about hidin' them that there were no such goofs in this drawing... Not that I haven't used a blob to my advantage on occasion mind you ;~)

That, Sir Bobert, Is my favorite Dali. Another I think to be a true American Origninal (although he did study in France and Europe) is Edward Hopper. Just an incredible artist. "Early Sunday Morning" primo!

And I hear you talking to Amos. Making goofs work to your advantage is a huge piece of what it's all about. Art happens. And it really happens in water colors! You can herd oils around all day to get them where you want them but water color is truly a happening. It layers in reverse and depending on how wet you work, most serendipitous!

Sp[eakin' of water colors, it ain't my favorite meduim but when the P-Vine and I were sparkin' I did one of irises in water color which, of course, she took stright to the fram shop to have it matted and framed... No major mistakes in it...

But I unnderstand mistakes... Music is full of them but most experiences players have a bag ot tricks they use to hide them even from other musicans...

Yeah Bobert! The way they hides mistakes from other musicians is, they calls it "style"!!

The Hopper painting you are referring to is titled "Nighthawks". "Early Sunday Morning" is a 1930's looking New York type sidewalk with two-story buildings and small shops at sidewalk level. The light is coming in in that low horizontal direction and all the windows are dark but edged with the coming dawn. You can just feel the picture breath becasue it has life in it somehow. You feel the sleeping souls and perhaps those who are just awakening to meet a new day on the same old sidewalks. It is a tremendous work, an American masterpiece if ever there was one. Check it out when you get the chance. An exhibit of Hopper came to SF about 20 some years ago and I was priviledged to see it. It makes me want to throw my colors away! I think, what's the use? when I see the works of true masters. I get that way about Rembrandt, Dali, Van Gough. Pizzaro, Manet, Monet, etc. if you know what I mean. Nah, I'll just keep plugging away, thankful that I have enough talent to appreciate the greats!

Since it came up missing in Boston, I have bave been makin my own. Sort of an homage to my mom who copied many famous oils.

So far I only have it sketched by way of projection onto an original sized canvas but this thread reminded me to go back to it.

I've been to major exhibits of Van Gogh, Gaughan and Monet... I've got a 5 foot by 2 1/2 Monet print in my bathroom... Yeah, I know... No place fir a print but it's under glass (sucker weighs in at about 100 pounds weith frame...

Rembrandt bores me... I've seen so many of them over the years that after awhile they all look alike..

I'll check out the Hopper, Slag... I've got a entire book on him somewhere... BTW, I collect art books... Got well over 200 of them... Maybe 300??? I donno... My mom, bless her heart, still gioves me more of them every Christmas and birthday... Sometimes she gives me ones that she had allreadt given me...

You check out Estes, Slag??? Man, that guy is the absolute shits when it comes to painting stuff that is behind glass... You know, where you see both what is behind and the reflections of what ain't...

Hey, this will make ya'll drop yer jaws... I was telling yall about Will Anderson, the artist who got me started as a youngin'... We'll he was in Euope right after WW II and art was cheap... He came home with an orginal Bosch and two Albrect Durer woodblock prints... I remeber seein' them growing up but they really didn't mean all that much to me until I got into my teens...

The drawin' is of the front of a Georgian style row house from the late 1800s that had been confiscated by Virginia Commonwelth University for a new ___________ building... The rear of the building had been bulldozed the day I did the drawing... I returned that night with ladders, tools and help and helped myself to all the iron-work and took it home and later used most of it in rebuildin' a rear porch of the house I owned in the Woodland Heights district of Richmond...

But this pen-'n-ink is a fair representation of lots of drawing and paintings I did in Richmond in the 70s and 80s and was the one I choose to have printed to use as party favors for a one-man-show I held at a small gallery in Richmond which was entitled "Pieces of Richmond"...

Ain't no Cezanne, however...

BTW, I went to the Getaway with the last 6 remaining prints and came back with one... Hope the folks who got them enjoy them...
