I often get quite a giggle when I see a Mudcat wrangle descend to the "you must not have a life" thing; all the Mudcatters I know have quite a life, and quite a lot of fun in it, too.

So I was thinking that a fun thread might be just giving a very short textual snapshot of something fun in your day coming up, or lately-- the Glam Mudcatting thread is a such a hoot partly because of the brevity of the wacky images it evokes.

So I'll go first:

Gospel Morris Liturgical Dancing

Much to Mrs Scrump's chagrin, I seem to spend a lot of my spare time (ha!) rehearsing (band practice or practicing songs on my own, etc.), gigging, or attending other people's gigs in folk clubs or festivals, or singarounds/sessions, etc. Sometimes I go a whole week without a night in. She enjoys it too (although she's not a performer herself) really, but she regrets that I don't seem to get much else done around the house or garden anymore.

I'm a mother of three children who studies psychology at university, is interested in self-defence training, dances Square Dance, rides horses, prepares summer camps for adults, writes lyrics (sometimes these are a little bit ticklish (?)). And every summer I pack my backpack and for a week I go to wander with my friends (and without children, of course) as troupers (?). I think I really HAVE a life...

Okay...running a public library in a town of 53,000+, fencing, working around the house and yard, building a .54 caliber flintlock Jaeger rifle, sorting out and working on family photos going back before 1900, visiting local and nearby attractions (like Yellowstone National Park), playing the trumpet and trying to re-learn the keyboard, paying bills, trying with vague success to get and keep fit, going to physical therapy for my left ankle, being a member of the local American Legion & Model Railroad & Shooting & Archery clubs, fighting with the VA, cooking and today I'm going to join the now-forming food co-op.

That's all that comes to mind right now.

Apart from work there's at least three and sometimes as many as six 90-minute visits to the gym each week, laundry and tidying at home, grocery shopping, occasional adventures in hyper-culinary entertainment (i.e., dinner parties), church, my fortnightly mandolin lesson, and in my copious free time I read newspapers and novels, practise the mandolin, two kinds of banjo and the guitar, and sleep.

In any one week, teaching guitar/bass/mandolin to folks aged 8 to retirement (it's the full-time job), church choir, woodworking, reading, walking, listening to music, recording, band practice, paid gigs, volunteer gigs at a nursing home, instrument repair, fishing, keeping up with the bride's and kids' activities, household repairs and upkeep...in summer maybe canoeing, hiking, used to do archery until the local club folded, camping...

If there were twice as many hours in a day I'd do more of everything and photography, bird watching, travel, model railroading...

You can't beat fun for a good time.

Peace, Mooh.

Most days & weeks....woodturning till I'm tired, then surfing the WWW for 'important' stuff, like my family tree on GBNF, or following the exploits of our illustrious legislators on C-SPAN, or following the history of the universe on The Discovery Channel...or pretending to throw out one more layer of the junk uhhh, interesting stuff we have accumulated in 25 years, or finding new ways to access & play the 10,000 various music files I have acquired in 2 years... (so there's this combo CD/MP3 player that, with a plug-in gadget, can broadcast into the car stereo...)....

You asked for the "fun stuff": well, last week, once nightly, you could have seen me wearing bowler hat, tweed jacket, cravatte, long black skirt, brandishing a riding whip, prancing about (with several others) on an imaginary horse, to music. That was my fun highlight of last week.

This week I have taken children to the moon and another lot on an extremely spooky ghost train to a place where they built weather-making machines.

Didn't get paid for prancing with the whip (the pleasure was enough !) - but will get paid for the other stuff.

All true.

Well, it looks like a busy weekend upcoming. My former next door neighbor -- we lived next door to each other for almost 20 years before I upped and moved across town when I got married -- and I have been woefully out of touch recently, and my wife invited him over for dinner Saturday, so I'm making a cassoulet and opening an old bottle of wine or two. Sunday morning, the plan is reading the Sunday Times (starting with the Magazine and crossword puzzle) and a cup of tea and listening to some newly acquired recordings of French song (Faure). Later, hopefully, a hike with the dogs, maybe along the slough to see what waterfowl have started passing through. I've also been slacking on a photo project that a friend and I have been working on, and the hike may be a good opportunity to get back on track with it -- if I can get my wife to hold the dogs' leashes (she's usually pretty good about that). Don't know what else.

I'll also probably have to put in a couple hours of work-related writing, which isn't exactly what I'd call "fun stuff."

michael

PS to Amos -- Sounds great. A good friend of mine, the husband of one of my business partners, is just now learning to fly and he's become completely enraptured by it.

I retired exactly a month ago!

So my life now is based around the Wednesday Craft group, & lunch on Thursdays with former collegues.

On other days I do fun things like shop (6 CDs last week, tho 2 came from a birthdy gift voucher), head to the local pool for a bit of hydrotheraphy (walking around in the moving water for an hour), visit the library & my physio & doctors & buy groceries in the middle of the week, rather than before work, or on weekends.

I haven't got round to the equally fun Spend Time with Retired Friends & Friends Who Work Part-time yet, give me time!

In a couple of weeks I'm going ot the National Folk Festival for the first time ever without applying for leave!

sandra

since you asked, they are 3 Mudcatter CDs from Chantyranger & Radriano, and Gregorian Chant, Hildergrd of Bingen, Benjamin Britten's War Requium

Now that I'm retired, I have less time to do what I want. I don't know how that works. Anyway, I have found time to try recipes that I didn't have time for when I worked. When the weather gets nicer I'll get back to my main hobby of driving to places I haven't been and going down rural roads away from the main routes to see what's there.
I also get together with my band once a week to jam, and we have a once-a-month gig that doesn't pay, but we do it for fun. I'm also trying to teach myself new instruments. I'm also renting a lot of DVD's of TV shows that I didn't have time for back when I was working different shifts - Northern Exposure; Upstairs, Downstairs; The Pretender; Quantum Leap - the list is endless.

Reading all the above I've been thinking "S**t, I'm just a couch potato". Then I put my (Temporarily early retired) days together ; Treadmill at gym at least 3 times a week, playing guitar-not long enough, Grauniad X word (Araucaria-you old devil !), reading whatever I have from the library, the usual domestic stuff-go Joe !, watching TV - Master and Commander last night. And now, packing up to move to Scotland. Mustn't forget the fortnightly visits to the Job Centre and looking on the net etc. for (very) temporary work.

Well, in an hour I'm rambling over to the county council offices and making their life hell over some planning shambles they're perpetuating ... and I intend to enjoy myself immensely.

Then a drive 'up country' to talk to some people about doing a project based on two source singers from their area - well, one singer and one collector, both passed on. After that, if I have the time, I'll call in on some great people, both of whom are writing books about Welsh trad music.

And then home for Friday evening (yea! Sleep in Saturday!)

Alec: "imaginative interpretation" had been my intention in the way I described what I had been up to. This was legitimate theatre for a family audience, however ! (A lovely folkie play, "Candleford" - as in Albion Band: Larkrise).

Regrettably none of your "Items 1) 2) or 3)" for me, but we 'mature' ladies did get to see a couple of rather dashing young actors getting ready in the wings for The Bath Night Scene. A girl's got to get her thrills where she can...

H. Allen Smith had a great line about a guy about my age who was asked by an old friend who hadn't talked to him in some years: "And how do you spend your time these days?"

The reply was, "Peeing, and trying to remember the names of my friends."

Except for eating, sleeping, walking, X-C skiing, playing guitar, singing, reading, playing with cats, and hanging around on the internet, that about covers it.

Oh, yeah, I do go into the office - part-time now.

I seem to spend a disproportionate amount of my spare time (I work as an Inspector of Public Buildings) hanging around pubs of dubious reputation, my drinking being annoyingly interrupted by requests to sing a song or play a tune on the banjo.
