This is a short but interesting read- with an appalling picture of housing conditions at San Quentin.

Interesting in that the ability to carry a weapon in that State is very liberal. Anyone can wear one openly, with a permit required for conceal carry.

"Peaceful in Maine"????

I can hear the wind blowing through the pine trees outside right now, kicking up quite a racket. And some damn bird is chirping as well.

Well, I think it is unfair of Maine to just be so all-fired smug and sanctimonious and make the rest of us look so bad. I think we should get a mob together and go up there and fix em up right. Alright, lads, who's wid me? Lads? Um, lads??

"... fix em right."

It might be the most peaceful state but I would venture to say that has a lot to do with what SINS said. So. if I were your, I would think twice about tryin ta "fix em". Don't mess with tough, good people.

The Maine turnpike is littered with the bones of sharp operators who came here thinking they could snooker the rustics.

Look up The Brady gang. Damn fools thought they could just walk into a gun store and buy machine gun bullets!

I thought it was interesting that of the 5 most peaceful states, three of them are in New England.

By the way, Vermont has no concealed law.

"We're snowbound most of the year and at the mercy of the black flies the rest of the time. No time for crime."

That may work for Maine but it is equally true for Alaska- and here we've got plenty of time for crime. We'll have to dig deeper.

Maine also has fewer law enforcement personnel per capita than other states. So maybe there's a lot more crime happening here that's not being reported.

I've been wondering about our apparent lack of crime these last few years. I still think it was a major crime that our current governor was elected. The idiots who voted for him should really be charged with something, or at least have their heads examined. So it goes!

Thread drift...

I've been to Maine a number of times and always enjoyed the friendly people, the slooow pace, the beautiful scenery both along the coast and through farm country, the old architecture... but, the sense of community shines through most. Ya don't have to leave here to see because we get MPBN TV here. I try not to miss shows from Maine, about Maine.

Atlantic Canada also shares something else with our neighbours to the south, all the way to New York and, some, further. Our friends and relatives who went to live and work there. It's our natural trading route. Never really made sense to trade over the Appalachians, except that the border made our railroads and roads go east-west.

I ain't never lived in Maine. Maybe there is a connection of some kind there.

- Chongo

p.s. Anyways, it is obviously not the best place for my line of work, which is fightin' crime...specially real violent crime. I figger if a case don't include at least one stiff from the getgo, it is hardly worth takin' on. I need the excitement factor. It motivates me to work a lot harder. True, a dead client can't pay...but his grievin' relatives or his estate can.

I kind of figure his last remark about corrupt middle management in state govenment is going to disturb the peace a bit.
I love his blanket statements that condemn everyone within two hundred miles for the crimes of one or two.
All welfare recipients are lazy; all middle managemnt is corrupt.
Meantime he makes sure his family and buddies get jobs others have worked years to qualify for.

Kendall, I love that! What a great bumper sticker. LOL!!!

It's kind of like the motto of my home:

Could the actual reason be historic? That being, because Maine was technically part of Canada for a short time after the British "took it over" in the war of 1814 -(but gave it back later, because it was just too peaceful).

:)

""Nova Scotia Lieutenant-Governor Sir John SHERBROOKE led a force from Halifax into Maine, capturing Castine on 1 September. By mid-month British forces held much of the Maine coast, which was returned to the US only with the signing of the peace treaty"" Source, Canadian Encylopedia

""because it was just too peaceful""

I should have stated, "possibly" because it was just too peaceful.

I don't contend that I am an expert in understanding British reasoning during the "early years" in British North America.

Ed T... I was told by a history buff many years ago that the Brits who negotiated the treaty "agreed to" the wrong river because they didn't know the geography and couldn't read their own maps. As I recall (?), he said the border should have been three river systems further.
