What happened to 'em? Is it as simple as the fact that it would take an extra bucks labor to put them out? Has everyones taste actually changed to where they wouldn't sell now? Would you buy this , or this If it were available?

My only two tone was a clapped out '53 Ford Victoria, black with white top. Not a spectacular example. There are a couple of two tone '55 or '56 Fords around town that still look great. Who likes two tones? What's your favorite?

The first, and only, new car my father ever bought was a 1955 two tone Buick Special like this one which was comprised of the colors of the flag of Poland in honour of his Polish heritage.

They might still sell well. If I were Chevy I'd pop out a retro tutone (remember that spelling?) in THIS big selling two-tone.

Love those colours Spaw, they also look fine in 1950's era bathroom decor.

They're still around some. New ones at that. Black and white with a highpowered lightshow on top!

I once saw an all white Triumph Herald and once an all blue one but all the others were two tone. Red and white was common (like my Dad's) as was "conifer and cactus" (like my Uncle's).

Well, yeah... Cars used to have "style".. No more... They are all designed like bubbles... No crome down the sides to create a break for two-tonin'...

But there are a number of current models that have lines shaped in that could lend themselves to natural color divides. I see custom paint jobs around with good clean color divides somewhere on a plain surface, so it can be done; but it may take skilled, painstaking work that the automakers don't want to get into on a regular basis.

With the weak car market, I think the manufacturers would be skittish about creating too many "special" items that might not sell well. Now if you wanted to have a special order car with a two-tone paint job, and prepaid for the car, or at least partially prepaid, you might get one.

The very best is tutone. You have to go to the top of the line to get those two-color with chrome. The traditional black and silver, gray and silver, etc. of the 1920s.

They are planning a four-door model for the average family man.

Well, yes, if you averaged our income, and Bill Gates income, I guess that would average out to someone who could afford one no problem. : )

Heck, what's so special about two-tone cars? Bubba has two of 'em. 'Course they wuz both one-tones 'til they got wrecked an' Bubba went scroungin' fer body parts down at the junkyard. Now his blue truck has one red fender and his wife's white Camaro has a green driver's side door. He swears he's gonna paint 'em some day. I'll believe that when I see it.

Well, I once had a four-tone car: Red door, green hood, blue car with a mustard-yellow trunk lid. Paid $50 for it, and never did get around to having it painted. Very useful for bluffing BMWs in crowded lane merges.

I had a black over silver 1998 Ford Fi50 extended cab 4X4. It was pretty (which I couldn't have cared less about, really). I have a 2010 THE SAME COLOURS and it's pretty. It ain't really a tutone, but I really like it on accounta I don't have to spend so much money in repairs to keep it on the road... fer now.

I did have a tutone Chev once... maroon and primer. Well, threetone if ya count the fibreglass.

That thing with the rear wheel off is not a canard. I once did it on my way home from Maine in a '65 Citroen ID. I had a blowout at the intersection of 91 and 95 and pulled over. I did not realize until then how clapped out the car was. Not only was the underside too rotten for the jack but the spare tire was dead. I stacked up a mess of stuff with the car elevated, retracted the wheel, removed the dead tire and wheel, reraised the car, removed the blocking and drove home. Fortunately, the car belonged to the dealership and not me. [I was their sales manager at the time.] One of the many things which made me appreciate the beauty of Citroen automobiles.

I owned a Ford Zephyr Mark II, Black and duck egg blue. A beautiful car, bought it new. Before that I had a Morris Oxford Series IV Estate, green with Blue trim. Soft engines yes, but style and comfort second to none.

A contrasting roof does legitimately make a car two tone, but those pictures remind me that when I think of two tone, I generally picture color areas divided by chrome strips, as Bobert referred to earlier, or by something like sculpted creases.

"He's got tan shoes with pink shoelaces
A polka dot tie and man oh man
He's got tan shoes with pink shoelaces
And a big Panama with a purple hat band!"

That's the chorus!

"Pink and purple" or "purple with yellow polka dots" used to be thee phrase for gauche.

"Two tone baby with the fluid drive!" That was also a phrase you could hear quite often when I was a kid. The hydrmatic transmission was a big deal back then.

And white-wall tyres, too.

The only two-tone I coveted was a Jaguar show-car. An E-Type, dark blue on top and silver on the bottom. The difference was that it FADED from one colour to the other. It looked like a shark.

Hate to try to get it repainted after some toad keyed it.....

I once saw a paisley-patterned Mini.

I have always (well, for the last few years anyway :-) ) fancied a Nissan Figaro. Economical (1L engine - 3 speed auto) all mod cons - CD player, AirCon. modern gear etc. Built in the 1980s based on the old Micra but looking a lot older.

Maybe when I don't need to haul around 3 tons of shopping every saturday. And maybe not the pink one...

My first car was a 1951 Chevy, similar in 2-tone green colors. I drove it from summer '57 to 1962, and could have nursed it longer if I had known how to coax more life from the generator by banging on it with a big wrench.
