Subject: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: smallpiper Date: 26 Sep 02 - 12:01 PM What can I say Bouys and Gals - this is the latest CD release from Cara. It is blend of traditional and origional tunes and songs and it is quite frankly wonderful (yes I know that I know the band but that wouldn't stop me from being objective). The combination of tunes and songs is tasteful in the extreme from jolly rigs and jeels to waltzes and airs - some of which are composed by band members- and are guaranteed to get you going in one way or another. The singing of Mike Ryan is exceptional, his origional songs should strike a note with all of us especially 21st century man. The fiddle playing of oakly is superb and John Rawlings guitar playing completes the sound and sets superb rythms and counter point. Mikes whistle and pipe playing are also excellent. Just to show ho wbroad their range is the end the CD with a brilliantly evocative Russian Miltary Waltz played on mandolins and guitar - truly inspired. So bouys and gals what are you awaiting for get in touch with Oakly and but your copy now! Cheers John |

Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: GUEST,JfH Date: 26 Sep 02 - 03:12 PM Smallpliers-have you found a new home for the Hase session yet? I have done a bit of research and come up with a few suitable venues, I would have sent this in a PM , but there is summat wrong with my system, and I can't log in. |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: smallpiper Date: 26 Sep 02 - 07:38 PM Dear guest,JfH No we haven't but the landlady at the Hase is complaining about the proliferation of sprouts on the window ledges in her toilets. I can't explain this phemomenon and think it must be alien music lovers expressing their disapointment at the demise of the session. Do you want to but a Cara CD? you should as Oakley will tell you its very gud |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: GUEST,John from Hull Date: 26 Sep 02 - 07:47 PM JfH was me! i thought you would have gessed that, there is a session at The Woolpack, Westwood Road, Beberley, on Tuesday 9pipers are welcome) as it is run by a piper, Jed, don't know if you know him? Tall bloke with an ear missing , there is free food there as well, i went there with harpmaker and Mandolin Malcolm and we had chicken dinasors and chips. |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: smallpiper Date: 26 Sep 02 - 07:52 PM Ha ha you cunnig divil using initials to fool us mere mortals! Yeah I know Jed he's a real nice bloke and a bloody good Northumbrian piper but because of key differences we can't actually play together but that has never stopped us trying to. You must excuse me as I've had some 9bearhoi tonight. I will try and make it to these myriad of tyesday and thursday sessions as soon as I can. How di dthe new session go at the land of green ginger? |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 26 Sep 02 - 08:12 PM I dont know as i did not go, i was going to but i felt a bit crap, Les said he was going, and I heard Graham the Banjo was going, so it was probably a good session, I will try to get to the next one, I was speaking to Steve at The Sun about the possibility of holding a session there every week, that way people would know what was going on, and it's a good venue anyway. He was very enthusiastic, but said the room used is booked up with meetings for the next month, but after that there should be no problem. The Tip n Spale is available in the meentime. |

Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: Skipjack K8 Date: 27 Sep 02 - 06:53 AM I have now burned the definitive bootleg, and can show any interested parties a whopping 16% discount by offering my own copies of this splendid CD at £10 each. Rest assured that none of the proceeds will reach any Caran, thereby not sullying their artisitic purity with grubby commerce. Only by keeping our music below the poverty line will we preserve its purity. All proceeds from bootleg sales will be donated to the landlord of the Sloop in exchange for abitiously priced 9bearhoi, to be shared amongst all aerophonists present. I think that's only fair. Gary |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: GUEST,Oakley Date: 27 Sep 02 - 07:34 AM I was sitting on the bridge of my new icebreaker in a big leather chair, letting my thoughts wander to Sireen, naked cycling, sprouts, Lille, Twillingsgate, bannanannanans, melodeonist pelts and classic airship restoration - you know the sort of thing. All this shattered like a Sloop table when I read Gary's post. Original, genuine copies of Asleep Behind the Settee can be identified easily as they are all in boxes in my cowshed. If you see one on someone's phonograph it is definately one of Gary's and must be destroyed. The owner must also have his spats torn from his brogues and a sprout deposited in his lavatory. The bar code on Asleep behind the Settee is Fat one, fat one, fat one, space, medium one, thin one, thin one, medfium one, space, fat one, fat one, three thin ones, space, two medium ones, a fat one, a thin one, double space, fat one and three medium ones. Look for this when approached by any dishevelled aerophonist in an opera cape and thigh length leather boots, leading an pair of impressive but imaginary horses.

Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: Oaklet Date: 27 Sep 02 - 12:30 PM Smallpiper, did I detect an element of drivel in your last post? The heating system is brilliant aboard the "Penelope R" as she is now christened. I am starkers on the bridge without a single goosebump. But that is only because I havn't got a CD player on which to listen to "Asleep Behind the Settee". If I had, I would resemble a plucked turkey (or anything else that might look severely goosebumped).

Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: GUEST,iains Date: 27 Sep 02 - 03:42 PM I have only heard live excepts from the CD, but if it like their last production (only better) I would recommend it to anyone. The track Exile's Son is stunning.I have heard it sung live by Mike Ryan many times over the last five years and it still for me has lost none of the magic of when I first heard it. |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: smallpiper Date: 27 Sep 02 - 07:00 PM I'm sitting here with that track running through my mind. You are right it is stunning. People are really missing out so I think that Cara ought to put some of their tracks on MP3.com or some such so that our colonial cousins can have a listen. Go for it bouys |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behing the Settee - Cara From: smallpiper Date: 02 Oct 02 - 06:46 AM The Oakley still has copies to sell to you lot. I will advise you as soon as they get some tracks on MP3. (if they tell me that is) And you are right jOhn tread drift is okay. |

Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: ossonflags Date: 16 Nov 02 - 11:50 AM Asleep behind the settee This is collaboration between some of the finest musicians I have had the privilege to listen to. Dave Oakley, fiddle and mandolin, Mick Ryan uillean pipes, mandolin, guitar, vocals and whistles and John Rawlins guitar and cittern. This CD has everything a good piece of work should have, not least the balance of light and shade. But the overwhelming impression I get from this is joy, happiness and a celebration in song and tunes of some of the best original and traditional music from the Celtic tradition. I have heard "Cara" play live on various occasions and this is an excellent representation of what they do in their live performances. After listening to this CD it is very hard to pick a favorite piece from so much good material, but my top three would be: " Exiles Song", "Second of May" and "She Moved Through The Fair". "The Mountains of Pomeroy" would be a close fourth. I listened to this with a certain amount of nostalgia as it was on one of the first Folk LP's I ever bought in my long lost youth. Like any good CD you always find something different in the music each time you visit it. The introduction of Mick's playing of the uillean pipes on "The Second of May" is superb, just the right level of understatement that literally makes the hairs stand up on the back of your head. Any one who sings Irish songs in English pubs (and Irish pubs), as I do, will know exactly what Mick is getting at in his "Exiles song" I just can't get this one out of my head. John Rawlins on cittern and guitar is, as always, superb. The guitar arrangement on "She Moved Through The Fair" (a favourite song of mine that Oakley has forbidden me to sing), has got to be the best I have ever heard. Oh, and speaking of that dairy farmer from south Ferriby. I have been involved with Dave in his other life, as a musician in another band, for about two years, so I believe I can speak with a certain authority. Taking time out from soothing his Fresians (and sometimes me) Dave, as usual gives of his all in both his fiddle and mandolin playing. I close my eyes listening to the air "Abbeyfeale" that Dave penned himself, and I am right back to the west coast of Ireland. The excellence of his delivery, feel and passion for the music shines right through all the pieces he is involved in on this CD. I find it hard to listen to this CD without a pint of Guinness in the hand. Overall a truly inspirational piece of work I absolutely urge you to buy this excellent CD, it will be the best twelve quid you will have spent this year. So stick this on, close your eyes, get a drink in your hand - or whatever is your preference - and enjoy. Mick McGarry ----- Lead singer in Oakley's other band. |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: Bassic Date: 16 Nov 02 - 11:59 AM Couldn`t have put it better `flags. If some of these tunes don`t start appearing in the sets of some of the established "names" on the traditional music scene then I will be very suprised. Have you sent a copy to Radio 2? |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: ossonflags Date: 16 Nov 02 - 12:04 PM I aint bassic, but possibly the oaks might.I have already disscussed with the dear boy the possibilty of sending a copy to a contact of mine who owns two music shops in Dingle county kerry. same contact is a personell friend of that other great fiddler nigel kennedy.who knows what could happen if the oaks and he got together. |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: Bassic Date: 16 Nov 02 - 12:13 PM Sorry `flags. She must have miles of film by now and I want to see if I get into the film in one of the crowd scenes!! See you soon if I can shake off dis `orible cold that I got at last nights Cara gig! |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 17 Nov 02 - 01:13 AM heloo, This CD was played on Henry Arytons Traditional Music Show last night on BBC Radio in the North, this covers the whole of the nortth of England, or part of it.He said it was really nice. If you want a copy of this CD you should send a message to oakley, or if you are lucky you could get one from the mudcat auction, click on auction, but you have to be lucky because there is a bidding war for it between MMario and GGlok.john PS Mrs Ossonflags has just made a filum about cristmus cakes, i saw it on my telly, we have got a different telly in hull called KIT. |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: Oaklet Date: 17 Nov 02 - 07:42 AM Ossonflags, I know I mentioned this to you last night, but I wanted to publicly thank you for your thoughts and to confess in a thread read by literally tens of people that I had to read your post to fellow Caran - Mike Ryan and sobbed throughout. I was a bit moved by what you had to say and the way in which you said it. There; I am a soppy git at times - but you probably know that already. |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: KJ Date: 17 Nov 02 - 02:20 PM It's a lovely CD, just right for relaxing to after a hard shift. Mr Oakley's 'The Second of May' & 'Abbeyfeale' and the band's sensitive treatment of the melodies are an absolute delight. |

Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: Oaklet Date: 09 Jun 03 - 02:28 PM Thanks KJ. We are off to do another in August so that Skip can produce hundreds of bootleg copies, meaning that we'll have to grope blindly for the solvency glitter. Good job we're in the capable hands of Gamblemusic (branches throughout Barrow). |
Subject: RE: Review: Asleep Behind the Settee - Cara From: Oaklet Date: 09 Jun 03 - 03:07 PM Another thing. I was going to ask if you and (it was) Colin were handled by Gamblemusic. But then I realised that I saw you in concert in an appropriate venue last night for money, so the question became immediately redundant. |
