Everyone please read the Andrew Sullivan blog today. Just go to Drudge report and click. This pope apparently has more problems than we were even aware of. If this is all true, and I can't say for sure, but Sullivan has my trust, I want him depoped. Having to do with the cover up of a priest, not just any old priest, but one with some sort of special office...running a teen sex ring. I want this pope gone. To heaven, or take an early retirement or whatever but I want him gone. I did go ahead and all most of the US cardinals. Some of them do not have impressive office staffs, but a few do. I plan to still write and send the Sullivan article. And he articulates what I have failed to about how the sickness in the church actually creates these creeps. mg

The personal connection to Maciel is crucial - and Maciel is also integral to the new ultra-conservative establishment. His running a gay teen sex abuse ring was not encouraged by liberal theological deviation (as it might have been elsewhere). It was old-style Catholic sex abuse: highly conservative closeted gay priests, psychologically crippled by decades of self-loathing and struggle against their homosexual orientation, acting out their stunted sexual development by abusing their clerical power over younger men and boys. And this pattern has long been known - and accepted - by much of the Church hierarchy. While they excoriated openly gay lay couples struggling honestly and openly with how to live moral lives as Catholics, they protected closeted, psychologically damaged gay priests who engaged in sex abuse. Benedict is therefore caught between two very difficult places - blaming John Paul II for protecting Maciel for too long; or admitting that he too turned a blind eye to investigating credible claims of sexual abuse. Last December's decision suggests to me that Benedict knows what's coming. And he's doing what he can simply to control and stay ahead of the damage.

The Maciel/Legionaries thing is a mess. You can read a pretty comprehensive article about it here (click). Maciel founded an ultraconservative religious order called the Legionaries of Christ, and they've been a pain and an embarrassment to the Catholic Church since their very beginning. Maciel hasn't got off scot-free - there have been periods when he has been suspended for investigations - but nobody has been able to pin anything solid on him.

The evidence linking Pope Benedict or Pope John Paul II to any sort of "coverup" is very weak. They did allow Maciel and his Legionaries to continue to exist in the Catholic Church, and that's very distressing to me - but no crime.

did you read the part about stonewalling for ten years? As a policy...This makes me just sick. Please don't stick up for a child molestation ring. mg
