Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: gnu Date: 06 Feb 02 - 03:36 PM Hoping to be on the Grand Codroy come July or August month. But workload will dictate that event. Might be able to get a side trip in, if I can get the main trip in visiting the Codroy Crowd. Might even be able to work it into the workload !? Must work on that. Been far too long. Pray tell, what's the festival's name ? Is there a website ? Does the Provincial Government put out any info ? Will there be a drop or two ? My apologies, ljc, I know I asked you this before... I got a memory like a steel trap, but it's rusted open. Where are you to ? |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: little john cameron Date: 06 Feb 02 - 06:41 PM click I am in Torbay awaaay on the other side of the island. This is the big on as we have guests and visitors from all over the world to it.There are lots of others all over though.I told Fielding to get in touch with Frank Maher about appearing here.He should not have any bother. ljc |

Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: gnu Date: 07 Feb 02 - 06:50 AM Right early August ! Regatta ! When the population of George Street, the pub district, swells to that of Orillia ! Wish I had a dog cart just that one night, with an endless supply of dogs and wurst. Torbay. That would be quite a side trip. It would take about a week because I wouldn't be able to pass up visiting buddies along the way. CC... if you are planning a road trip around then, you'd better make your ferry reservations soon. |

Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: CarolC Date: 07 Feb 02 - 07:11 PM Aaargh! You have to book the ferries that far in advance? How much do those buggers cost, anyway? Here's a link for the words to "The Yammie", otherwise known as "The Copper", for those of us who need some help with the translatin' |

Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: CarolC Date: 07 Feb 02 - 07:24 PM Or maybe "The Chopper" and "The Yammie" aren't the same thing. I'm confused now. But I thought I saw the words to "The Yammie" somewhere. |

Subject: ADD: Chainsaw Earl From: little john cameron Date: 07 Feb 02 - 10:33 PM Chainsaw Earl He was skinny as a rake like two by four Ugly as sin born premature Mother had trouble trying to take To a kid that looked like a garden rake All sons are sons and Dad wasn't proud Didn't make him feel like one of the crowd Wood-cuttin' boys from up in the sticks laughed at the sight of Earl. (Wimp!)
He was treated like scum and he felt like dirt
Stunned, stunned, stunned, stunned Earle
In this little town life went on the same
And nobody knew neither foe nor friend
Chain, chain, chain saw Earle
His cutter bar was ten foot two
Lightin up a smoke he let the chain saw down
(Sing it) Stunned, stunned, stunned as me arse

Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: gnu Date: 08 Feb 02 - 07:00 AM CC... http://www.marine-atlantic.ca/ If you get your dates narrowed down, I can give you some advice on when to cross and when not to cross. Some ships are better than others, especially on the Argentia crossing. I have an inside track... I worked with the ferries for seven years. |

Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: CarolC Date: 08 Feb 02 - 03:36 PM That's good to know, gnu. Thanks. We might need your inside connection. |

Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: GUEST,Jack The Sailor Date: 08 Feb 02 - 04:29 PM Gotcha!! How about the Conception Bay Festival, less crowded, quite traditional and close to my hometown... Bay Roberts Carbonear (Conception Bay festival, second longest running festival in the province), held the last full weekend of July, so if the George Street festival is held then and loud rock music and hordes of boisterous partially drunken late teen and early twenty sorts and rock fans are not your cup of tea, or just to catch some celtic and other folk music in a semi-rural environment, check it out. |

Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: little john cameron Date: 12 Feb 02 - 10:03 AM Welcome Kevin, excuse the madness that is going on here at the moment.Max will sort it out eventually!I suppose you guys are having a rest for a while. All that gallivantin is enough to addle you. How are the old tendons?Funny thing is that on the same day i nearly chopped my hand of with a grinder.Still get tingles when anything touches it lightly. Lots of stuff going on here on the Island these days.A far cry from when we started eh? Anyway welcome again.ljc |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: gnu Date: 12 Feb 02 - 10:19 AM Kevin... come on in and haul up a stump ! Like ljc said, ignore all the "GUEST" threads on at the moment. You'll enjoy all the time you care to spend with this crowd. There are lots of great music discussions and great "philosophical" debates. Laughter is a staple around here. Welcome. |

Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: CarolC Date: 12 Feb 02 - 04:36 PM Well, I have a question. How did you (ljc and gnu) know it was Kevin? (If in fact it was.)
Which leads me to my next question...
For the fellers: What's the story behind the name? Are you guys a collective like the Borg, and you all use the name "Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers", or is one of you "Buddy" (Kevin maybe?) and the other fellers are the Other Fellers?
And my last question (for now)... Do you guys need someone to play piano accordion for you? (Just kidding. I really suck. But in a very sincere sort of way.) |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: gnu Date: 12 Feb 02 - 04:46 PM I just followed ljc's lead, assuming he knew it was Kevin at the controls. Now, CC, you really left that wide open. Spaw would jump on you so quickie for that. |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: little john cameron Date: 12 Feb 02 - 04:51 PM Buddy's name is Kevin Blackmore, sure ah thocht aw'body knew that! Here in Newfoundland Buddy is a catch-all name when the persons name is not known. The other fellas his buddies. The story goes that whe the lads got together the were not too familiar,so they were called BWOF.. Too late Carol,Ray would get jealous. ljc |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: CarolC Date: 12 Feb 02 - 06:30 PM Wide open is it gnu? Hmmm.... I can think of a few other people who might
Well, ljc, I hope you can forgive the ignorance of a poor hangashore living in West Virginia. But I only just discovered the wonders of BWOF after you posted this thread.
In fact, as much as I find that I love it, I'm very much a newcomer to Newfoundland culture in general, and I still have a lot to learn. Now, I agree that Ray is a mighty fine accordionist. But he only has buttons, and not too many basses, if any. Surely everyone could use an accordionist with 120 basses total, including one whole row just for looking at (but never to play). However, I think the chances are very good that I am not that person.

|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: little john cameron Date: 12 Feb 02 - 08:19 PM Aw Carol,if ye've no' seen Buddy in person then ye've missed a vision o' Newfoundland manhood. The sheer occular magnificence portrayed is impossible to convey in mere words.Charisma is only a joke tae this man. ljc |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: little john cameron Date: 12 Feb 02 - 08:32 PM Here ye go then.click |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: CarolC Date: 12 Feb 02 - 08:58 PM ljc, once again, I find that I am profoundly in your debt. You were right! If ever there was a man who could wear plaid and yellow (and stuff), Buddy is certainly that man! What's it going to take for me to repay your wonderful kindness this time? |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: little john cameron Date: 12 Feb 02 - 09:25 PM Ah'll hae ye know ah'm a sick man.Ah'm a sucker for weemin accordion players.Mah psychiartist has banned me fae listenin tae Sharon Shannon records,an she disnae play oney bass notes. For Gawds sake dinnae tell me ye play the fiddle tae.If ye ever get tae Newfoundland ye'll hae the time o' yer life.Mudcatter Frank Maher has umpteen accordion records in his collection.Ah'll see if ah can find some o' his oan the net. ljc |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: CarolC Date: 13 Feb 02 - 08:35 PM No fiddle ljc. But I really enjoy the basses. So what with the keyboard, the basses, and the bellows (where the spirit of the instrument lives), I think I've got about as much as I can handle at one time. Although I did see a man play the accordion and a trumpet at the same time on a movie once. Looks like the trip probably won't be happening anyway. Nobody wants to go with me. Ah well. Probably make your psychiatrist's life a little easier anyway. I guess I'll have to figure out another way to return your generosity. |
|
Subject: RE: Buddy Wassisname etc From: little john cameron Date: 13 Feb 02 - 09:01 PM How about getting Fielding to get of his arse and get a booking at the folk festival. Then you could come with him.ljc |
