Sorry, Kendall... I saw that big "498" and I kinda got excited about being "500" on yer thread and, well yeah, the harpoon question was all that popped into my excited little pea-brain... I'm sure I could have done alot better than bring up yer harpoon... I mean, that's kinda a personal thing fir me to ask and, really, I don't wanta know...

Really, I don't... And now that it look as if yer on the road to recovery and yer prolly gonna live to be a hunnert that I reckon I might as well save me a butt whup, no matter how well deserved, fir my comment about Chevrolets... I'm sure that yer's ain't got no Edsel DNA in it...

BTW, glad yer home... Let's borrow one of yer friend's boats and go out lobster hunting... I'll wear my red lobster camo...

B~

Bobert, sorry, but you can't really "bring up my harpoon". I gave it away to a museum.

Tell you the truth for a change, I actually want a 1934 Ford. I love the style and they run so smooth and quiet. This '48 Chevy has 98000 miles on it and it sounds like a friggin' rock crusher. They will run forever but they sure do make a touse while they do it. Clearance in the mains is 3000 of an inch and that's too much for quiet.

I don't understand why folks can't leave the harpoon alone. I learned in a thread long long ago that Kendall had donated it to a museum.   Yet it keeps coming up.

On the other hand, Kendall and the harpoon as an image is now indelibly fixed in my mind, so I guess even though you know longer have possession of it in the physical sense you always will in cyber land.

Anyway! Welcome home Kendall. I am still peeking in and making daily wishes for good things to you and Jacqui.

Yup, Tam... I can't so much of think of Kendall withoutm automatically thinking of Chevrolets and harpoons... Now he comes along and blows the Chevy thought up and wishes he had a Ford 'cuase he's tired of listenin' to his "babbet-bearings" Chevrolets???

As for the harpoon??? Too much water over the dam there to erase... I mean, them things don't even have bearings...

Well now, Cap'n...mebbe we kin make a deal here.

Yah see, mah very own brother owns a harpoon. He bought it when he thought he could use it fishin' in the Mississippi River, but the danged fish were too danged big for it. Now, his wife runs a tight ship yah might say, and so his harpoon is on the wall of his garage, right above his workbench. It's in decent shape, since he's never used it (he tried, but it bounced off that ol' catfish, who picked it up and threatened my brother with a hemorrhoidectomy.

Mebbe we kin strike a bargain here.

That's Babbitt bearings--a kind of pot-metal which doesn't hold specs real well...

"a series of alloys used as bearing metal (not just Isaac Babbitt's original formulation). Babbitt metal is characterized by its resistance to galling.

The term "white metal" is also used in reference to bearing metal, but it is ambiguous because of the wide variety of senses that it has been used for over the centuries.

A wide variety of Babbitt alloys exist. Some common compositions are:

    * 90% tin, 10% copper
    * 89% tin, 7% antimony, 4% copper
    * 80% lead, 15% antimony, 5% tin
    * A lead-based based Babbitt (75% lead, 10% tin)
    * A copper-lead based Babbitt (76% copper, 24% lead)
    * A copper-lead-tin based Babbitt composed of (67% copper, 28% tin)

Originally used as a cast in place bulk bearing material, it is now more commonly used as a thin surface layer in a complex, multi metal structure.

Babbitt metal is soft and easily damaged, and seems at first sight an unlikely candidate for a bearing surface, but this appearance is deceptive. The structure of the alloy is made up of small hard crystals dispersed in a metal matrix composite of softer alloy. As the bearing wears the harder crystal is exposed, with the matrix eroding somewhat to provide a path for the lubricant between the high spots that provide the actual bearing surface. Tin gives Babbitt the property of lubrication if run without a lubricant. The friction will cause the tin to melt out to prevent or reduce damage to the shaft.

Combustion motors use the tin based Babbitt. The Tin based Babbitt is able to resist with pounding found in the combustion motor. Lead based Babbitt tends to work harden and create cracks which will lead to the bearing failing.

Lead based Babbitt can be used with constant turning tools such as saws."

Harpoons have a multitude of uses: lamp stand, lightning rod, "fetch" toy for the dog, retrieving tool for dropped silverware, and for squirrel hunting, to name but a few.

As long as you wife agrees, of course.

Hey, Bobert,

Lobstahs are green or sometimes blue. They're only red when dead on your plate waiting for their body to be desecrated and dipped in melted butter.

Change your camo...

True story.
Many years ago in New Bedford Mass. some poltroon insulted a whaler and challenged him to a duel. He was, I suppose, expecting the whaler to choose a standard weapon of the day because he was very good at using all of them. When the whaler showed up on the field with a harpoon and said to his second, "Stand by to reel this bastard in." The Coxcomb turned and ran.
There are details of course but you get the idea.

Hope you're both getting over your colds, can I recommend Hot Toddies???

1934 Ford? At the risk of getting into a technical conversation that I wouldn't understand, I suppose that isn't what we'd call a 'Y' type? We've got one of those in the garage but it's a long way from here to there....

Trubrit, when and where are you here across the pond????

I think Seamus buried it somewhere on their property and no one (especially Kendall) wants to talk about it.

Aunt Tami is taking the boy out with Bandit and Joey. They going to see if they can find that black and white kitty that Bandit almost caught the other night.

Abe Lincoln got into a dueling situation back when he was living in Springfield -- why is too long a story to tell here.

Anyway, being tall and quite strong he chose "dragoon sabers." He got over to the island in the Mississippi where Illinoisians dueled before the other guy, who found Abe decapitating fence posts with this god-awful thing. The duel was settled amicably, but Lincoln never liked to talk about it.
