And Vic Smith responded: Actual footage of the performers would be much more interesting. When I was in Yorkshire last summer, a friend had a video copy of Sam Larner and Harry Cox that was made by the BBC in 1964, but was never aired. It was a half hour documentary called "The Singer and the Song", I think. I am sure this might be what Suibhne is referring to. Debra |

Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Jack Blandiver Date: 14 Dec 09 - 02:25 PM It is indeed the Singer & the Song; I was thinking of sticking it up in 3 parts to allow a brief glimpse into a not so long vanished world before the powers that be request I take it down. Meanwhile, here's Paddy Tunney: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2W8KHz5Gbvk |
Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Suegorgeous Date: 14 Dec 09 - 03:45 PM Funny, it was just today I was looking for a decent version of Through Bushes and Through Briars on Youtube, and couldn't find one. Anyone else have better luck? Thanks Sue |
Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: GUEST,Lewis Becker Date: 14 Dec 09 - 05:02 PM There are some Copper family songs and two good Sheila Stewart songs (Andrew Lammie (search under Stewarts of Blairgowrie - with Ewan nad Peggy watching) and Jamie Foyers). But I find the line too narrow - how classify youtube submissions of Frank Harte, Anne Briggs (audio only), Dolores Keane, for a few. Lew |

Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Suegorgeous Date: 14 Dec 09 - 08:43 PM Yes, I found him, and one other, a woman. Apart from that, nothing. And I don't mean the Sandy Denny song. What are scads? |
Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: MGM·Lion Date: 14 Dec 09 - 08:59 PM 'scads' just a Brit term 4 'lots&lots'. I quite liked the tailcoated group of gents harmonising the RVW version of Bushes&Briars; but I can see why it would not count as part of your search 4 a 'decent' rendering, SueG. |
Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Suegorgeous Date: 14 Dec 09 - 09:25 PM Hmmm, didn't see any tailcoated gents. I obviously need to look harder! do you have a link to it? I'm British, but never heard of scads before..... :) |
Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: MGM·Lion Date: 14 Dec 09 - 09:34 PM Ah well, we live & learn. Haven't a URL — but I just googled 'Youtube bushes and briars' and the tailcoated gents headed the resultant menu. Try it & let me know. Btw - if you British, Sue: obvsly another insomniac. My sleep pattern all to hell since my wife died 2¼ yrs ago - what's your excuse for being up & mudcatting this time of night?! I think you're confusing folk with traditional here. This thread is to celebrate the rare instances of traditional singers on YouTube - source singers, call 'em what you will - not folk revival singers. |

Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Ringer Date: 15 Dec 09 - 06:58 AM "Scads" is British? I've never come across it except is a Neville Shute book called "Beyond the Black Stump," where it was definitely used by an Australian. Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Jack Blandiver Date: 25 Jan 10 - 09:40 AM Not a singer, but a Catskill NY fiddler, aged 70, circa 1929, who uses a dolly-peg for a mute & spits on his pegs to make them stick - in fact, he spits rather a lot, and maintains a professional composure throughout the various takes. This is the pure drop! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_q4m4PeEMA |

Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: GUEST,Jon Dudley Date: 25 Jan 10 - 12:48 PM The Coppers/The Copper Family are one and the same. I doubt if there's any Youtube of Bob and Ron Copper (Who were The Copper Family after the passing of John and Jim and before the arrival to the singing of Bob's kids John and Jill) but I can't be sure. The young Coppers are the offspring of John Copper and his sister Jill and their respective spouses...however they are The Copper Family too of course and used their 'Young' moniker when they were indeed young!...now they should properly be called The Copper Family too along with with John, Jill and Jill's husband. Confused...so are we. |

Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Brian Peters Date: 06 Feb 14 - 10:19 AM Just for interest, re the query by Suegorgeous five years ago, there's a good reason she couldn't find a traditional rendition of 'Bushes and Briars' on Youtube. It seems to have been quite rare in tradition, with only a handful of versions on The Full English and only a couple more in Roud. All of those versions have slightly 'vanilla' major key tunes, except for one: the rather nice modal / minor tune used in 'Far from the Madding Crowd' and popular on the folk scene was collected by Vaughan Williams from a Mr. Pottipher at Ingrave, Essex. RVW noted the tune in straight 3:4 time (it gets sung much more freely these days, and is better for it IMO), and only wrote down one verse, adding the rest later from a broadside. So, yet again, a folk revival favourite turns out to be - at least to some extent - a fake! Oh dear, back to New Penguin... |
Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Lighter Date: 06 Feb 14 - 11:19 AM > So, yet again, a folk revival favourite turns out to be - at least to some extent - a fake! Which should tell us plenty about the difference between popular and educated tastes! Tangentially: there are numerous YouTube recordings of "The Crabfish," including one unison version sung by two or maybe three generations of a nice American family somewhere in Dixie. (The video is called "The Crawfish," even they they clearly sing "codfish") "Heartbreak Hotel" provides the tune for one singer. |
Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: Brian Peters Date: 07 Feb 14 - 04:24 AM I haven't managed to find that crabfish / codfish song, but how nice to hear that folk creativity lives on! |

Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: GUEST,Mike Yates Date: 08 Feb 14 - 11:45 AM A couple of points. 1. According to Partridge, "Scads" means "Much; e.g. 'scads of money': adopted, ca. 1935, from US, esp. by would be 'slick' thriller-writers." And 2. If you like Dillard Chandler, get hold of the Smithsonian Folkways CD & DVD set "Dark Holler - Old Love Songs and Ballads" (SFW CD 40159). The DVD is a copy of John Cohen's film "The End of an Old Song". It captures Dillard, his music and his comunity far better than anything before, or since. |
Subject: RE: Traditional Singers on YouTube From: The Sandman Date: 08 Feb 14 - 12:43 PM traditional singers and singers of traditional songsare not the same thing according to collectors of songs. |
