Subject: BS: How to reverse the aging process
From: frogprince

Last week, on vacation in Seattle, my Mrs. woke up, saw that it was full daylight, and then noticed that her watch said only 4 a.m. Then she realized that the watch was running backwards. It still keeps perfect time, but in reverse. It's a common quartz, button-cell powered Timex; it had been perfectly normal since purchase about 6 weeks before.

One of our friends says it was subjected to a strong magnetic pulse that reversed the poles of the motor. But that would have had to happen about 5 a.m., on a bedside stand, upstairs, in a residential neighborhood, in calm weather.

She just called Timex, and the rep said, in effect, "I'm sending a paid mailer marked to my own attention; this I gotta see."

Have any of you ever seen this happen? Any theories as to why?

Neat! The only way I know to "reverse" the aging process isn't actually reversing, only stopping. And, it's not a real good option!

I think it should be right 4 times a day, even a painted clock is right twice a day.

If you mounted it so that it was viewed in a mirror the hands would look right (I think) but any numbers would not. Perhaps one of the 'cat's resident crafters could work something out, shouldn't cost more than say 10x the cost of the watch, and certainly a one-off.

As for why it is doing this, no idea whatsoever.

I have noticed that the exact same medical treatments which in fact help reverse the aging process in people (growth hormones, testesterone, steroids and others)
are the exact same treatments that Congress and the media machine are vilifying among baseball players and other athletes who are in wonderful condition.

There is no coincidence here.
Nor has the increased risk of cancer been proven.

Such treatments will of course be reserved for people like Bill Gates and you know who.

Actually, I have also experienced the "time standing still" moment. It first happened a little over ten years ago. This next April will our eleventh wedding anniversy! CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson

Having to take prednisone (steroid) for nine months did nothing to reverse anything in me, Donuel. It has horrible side effects, so wouldn't be worth it, anyway, imo. Maybe all those moneyed folks will wind up aging over-night, like Dorian Gray...:-)

I worked in a place that had a clock in an outbuilding that decided to run backwards one day. It was a plug-in clock with some sort of ad on the face....hung from the ceiling of a metal-roofed building. We used to time our breaks by it..*grin* Then one day it started running FORWARD...at double speed......then it quit.

This time travel is wearing...

The reason they want you to send the watch back is to hide and destroy it - if you flog it on eBay, you will get a lot more for it.. :-)

Well, interstin that this subject would come up since me and the Wes Ginny Slide Rule are puttin' the final touches on this one... We ran by the folks over at Tweeds but them folks ain't half a sophisticated as folks here in Mudville...

Here's how it works...

You know how there this North Pole and if you get to it you can actually walk accross the date line into yesterday... Right... So here's the deal... You just keep walkin' and walkin' 'round that pole and fir every time around the pole you'll be a day younger... It's vitually a sure fire way to take years away from yer age in no time...

The Wes Ginny Slide Rule has calculated that it will take a realtively good walkin' person about an hour and half to take one year off so in a couple day's one could be, ahhhh, like 25 ot 30 years younger!!!

Just think about it... Hey, every 20 or so years ya take a couple days off, strap on the walkin' shoes and, waalaa... Live as long as you like...

Money back guarentee...

Bobert

I understand that astronaut Jim Lovell (played by Tom Hanks in Apollo 13) has spent so much time in space traveling at high velocities that due to relativistic effects, he's .003 of a second younger than he would have been had he stayed earthbound.

I wonder what he has planned for all the additional time. . . .

Watches of all the passengers aboard a Florida flight were said to be uniformally incorrect and amounted to the same period of time in which the plane was out of contact.
Maybe it is an urban legend but amusing none the less.

Clock anomalies were central in 2 Twilight Zone episodes and several other high profile sci fi plots.

Missing time is something I can not attest to having happened to me. I can verify that a profound sense of the expansion or shrinkage of time is very familiar. Short term episodes often result from highly excited neuronal activity that slows time relative to the speed of perception. As the brain speeds up I was able to see the individual flashes of flouresent lighting... or the burning powder fly from the muzzle of a gun to its target 30 feet away... or watching a car accident unfold on the thruway as a car beside us hydroplaned into the meridian and eventually dug into the mud catapulting it into cart wheels - expelling the 2 backseat passengers who then skidded on their butts on the wet grass at 80 miles per hour, I could see the experssion in their eyes , I watched each cartwheel until the Cadillac vaulted one last time upside down crushing the top down to the doors on the opposite lanes of the NYS Thruway.

But there is another sense of time that is macroscopic to the previous microscopic phenomenon. I have had the sense of time fluctuating as clearly as if gravity itself had changed by a magnitude of 30%. I did some illustrations of the experience.

.....katlaughing

I also did prednisone steriods to rebuild nerves and counteract hearing loss. It is not an anabolic steroid. I was offered anabolics but refused them to date. I also discontinued some other anti aging meds since they seemed to produce an undesireable sense of aggression.

It's only yesterday part way around, Bobert; then it gets to be today again.

The passing of days is measured by the rotation of the earth, which happens once every 23.xxx hours, whether you are in Lapland or in Equatorial Guiana. That of years, by the orbit of the earth. Which you know all full well, you whacko!!

The clocks that actually were made to run backwards were something of a fad in the 1930 - 1950 span in my part of the US, in barber and beauty shops where there are always lots of big mirrors. Usually hung over the waiting area customers, they looked right when viewed via the mirrors behind the barber. They were sold almost exclusively by "barber and beauty supply outlets." A favorite barber shop style had the face on a simulated toilet seat just for added effect, and I've seen an occasional one of those, possibly authentic, recently in antique malls in my area.

The clocks occasionally show up in mass merchandising ads even now, but apparently without out any knowledge of the original/traditional reason for them. I'm told that many barbers/beauticians now don't even know why the traditional mirrors are there, but I haven't been in one of the shops since 1970, so can't say from personal observation.

Quite a few of the earlier ac motor driven clocks could be made to run backwards, just by giving the motor a bit of backward spin as you plugged them in. Addition of the "lag loop," a big single turn copper wire through the armature to produce an "induced second phase" in the magnetic field, made this much more difficult with "modern" clocks, appearing ca. late 1940s(?). Almost any simple rotary electric motor can be "run backward" if you force them into it, but some of them heat up pretty fast if you do it.

John

So my wife mailed the watch in, in the postage-paid mailer they sent her. She just got a little box back, with a new (different style)watch and a note saying they replaced her watch with one "of equal or greater value". No mention of any theory as to why the watch "backed up" on us.
Also enclosed, an invoice for $7.00. The watch that shifted into reverse was maybe two months old, tops. My wife is sure she was told by phone that there would be no charge; she's gonna call in again & see what they say. Besides which, the new watch is kinda ugly.

I have a customer that comes in once or twice a year because his VERY OLD quartz-driven Seiko "Just started running backwards."

Turns out the rotor on the stepping motor had two magnets, that were independant of each other but fixed to the same arbor. The great inertia of the rotor stopping and starting once a second would cause one of the magnets(which was slightly loose) to shift enough where the watch would impulse backwards!

Seiko discontinued the part long ago, but he comes in and I fix it long enough to get him another 9 monthes to a year down the road.
