Those who are aware of this case will be as delighted as I am at this news. Suddenly the world seems not quite as bad as it did a few minutes ago.

for full info on the case see:

Tuesday 11th July, 2000
Free at last - Ruth and John released after Court of Appeal hearing.

Ruth and John have been freed on bail and given leave to appeal against their sentences.

They have also won the right to challenge their conviction by a jury in the Cambridge Crown Court. The Court of Appeal has warned them that they might have to return to prison if their challenge to their convictions fails.

Campaign History

On December 17th 1999 Ruth Wyner, the Director of Wintercomfort for the homeless in Cambridge England, and John Brock, the charity's Day Centre Manager, were sent to prison for five and four years respectively drugs on the premises.

Yup! Perhaps the law isn't an ass after all. Now, when is Mark going to campaign for the Hawaii 50? [Groans all round]

Still not over. They've just been given permission to appeal, though at least they've been allowed out of jail for the time being. Here is a link to a story with a good picture.

But who can tell what goes through the minds of judges? This appeal is based on the fact that the judge misdirected the jury about what they could take into account. But what astonishes me is the way juries don't realise that they are quite entitled to reject any and everything that a judge advises or recommends or even instructs them to do.
