Is THIS (composed by R. Spofforth; Boston: S. H. Parker, 1835) the song?

Technically not a carol but a glee (though sung with great glee between carols in South Yorkshire village pubs coming up to Christmas). :0)

In case Masato's link (to American Sheet Music) should confuse anyone, the composer "Reginald, the son of William and Elizabeth Spofforth, was born at Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England, in the year 1770, being the eldest of a very large family."
The rest of the biography can be found at http://www.gsbgrafx.com/gtgenweb/johnspoffordreginald.html

Masato's link is to an ATTB arrangement, presumably for male voice choir. I have the more usual SATB arrangement, and can scan it & post if anyone would like it.

I think my favourite arrangement though is for brass band, as played in Saddleworth on Mayday morning, and to open the Saddleworth festival.

Noreen's right - this song / tune has a lot of significance for our area (Saddleworth). It's played by brass bands early morning on Whit Friday as they march through the villages ready to lead the churches in processions. And we always ask the local brass band to play it at the opening ceremony for the Folk Festival - I can't hear it without getting a huge lump in my throat! It's a wonderful piece!
