Well, this seems to be about the Great War, and also possibly American, so there are no queens involved, which argues against this being the right answer. I still think the Ex-Soldier title fits in with IanC's policy on legitimate ways of including an X in a quiz answer. I await developments.

Think again, Greg. Try this from the horse's mouth:

Still S and X to go. S is childish all right. X has to be Roman Numerals due to the dearth of song titles starting with X.

So we're looking for ten something

Youre right,Snuffy, back to the drawing board. I'll go back to looking for impoverished soldiers and their miserable ten pence or bob wages or pensions.

To all

Sorry ... I more or less forgot about this one. The Mudcat went down, then I've been ill.

Good work with X. Some lovely inventive answers I might even use once you've forgotten about them.

Wolfgang's 'ten bob a week' is getting very close. Also, I haven't cheated to the extent of making it, say XXX pounds. There's only one X.

The Queen is Victoria.

Well did a google search and found a line in a poem "Ten Years Dead"

Kipling songs for "A history of England"

The Bells and Queen Victoria
1911

"Gay go up and gay go down
To ring the Bells of London Town."
When London Town's asleep in bed
You'll hear the Bells ring overhead.
In excelsis gloria!
Ringing for Victoria,
Ringing for their mighty mistress-- ten years dead!

slainte

OK, no takers ... so.

The song I was thinking about was A. E Housman's "Grenadier" from Last Poems which is usually called Thirteen Pence a Day.

It's here in the forum.

There's another song, also in the forum, called Thirteen Pence a Day, though I'm not familiar with it.

Some comments when I get back to my notes next week.
