Subject: Lyr Add: HOMEWARD BOUND (Marta Keen) From: Musicman Date: 27 Mar 99 - 03:43 AM Neither of those, here they are: HOMEWARD BOUND (Words and Music by Marta Keen) In the quiet misty morning, when the moon has gone to bed, When the sparrows stop their singing and the sky is clear and red, When the summer's ceased its gleaming, when the corn is past its prime, When adventure's lost its meaning, I'll be homeward bound in time. Bind me not to the pasture. Chain me not to the plow. Set me free to find my calling and I'll return to you somehow. If you find it's me you're missing, if you're hoping I'll return, To your thought I'll soon be list'ning; in the road I'll stop and turn. Then the wind will set me racing as my journey nears its end, And the path I'll be retracing when I'm homeward bound again. Bind me not to the pasture. Chain me not to the plow. Set me free to find my calling and I'll return to you somehow. In the quiet misty morning when the moon has gone to bed, When the sparrows stop their singing, I'll be homeward bound again. If you need the music, let me know @ pevenden@vancouver.quik.com and I'll midi it and send it to you. Musicman |

Subject: RE: Homeward Bound Lyrics From: GUEST,bmb01x2j@msn.com Date: 17 Sep 03 - 10:40 PM Good day, I just have a quick question. Is this actually an old folk song, or did Ms. Keen write it? The version I have cites her as the author/composer (both lyric and music) in 1993. Does anyone know if this is the case, or if she based her version on an older song? Any information I can glean would be much appreciated. I'm researching this in conjunction with a massive university project, but I can't seem to make any headway. Thank you in advance. Bryan M. Subject: RE: Homeward Bound Lyrics From: Jim Dixon Date: 09 Oct 03 - 10:14 AM There is a choral arrangement of this song by Jay Althouse. Sheet music is available, and it appears in the repertoire of many choirs, and in the self-published recordings of a few of them. I wasn't able to find any information about Marta Keen, or evidence of any "commercial" recordings. For some reason, this song is quoted at several fantasy/science-fiction-oriented websites. The mp3 file that Susan provided a link to, comes from a site that belongs to Rosthern Junior College (actually a high school) in Rosthern, SK. The soloist is Amy Wiebe, a student. |

Subject: RE: Homeward Bound Lyrics From: Nigel Parsons Date: 19 Feb 06 - 08:33 PM To add to Open Mike (and purely from memory, so feel free to correct: I'm sittin' in the railway station, got a ticket for my destination, oooh oooh oooh oooh On a tour of one night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand And every stop is neatly planned for a poet and a one man band.... Homeward bound, I wish I was, homeward bound, CHORUS: Home, where my thoughts keep 'scapin', Home where my music's playin. home, where my love lies waitin'silently for me..... And every day is an endless stream of cigarettes and magazines. And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories And every stranger's face I see reminds me that I long to be.. Homeward bound.... Chorus Tonight I'll sing my songs again, I'll play the game and pretend But all my words come back to me. In shades of mediocrity. Like emptiness & harmony, I need someone to comfort me. Chorus, (repeat and fade) CHEERS Nigel |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta Keen) From: Jim Dixon Date: 26 Feb 06 - 08:22 AM Nigel and Open Mike: The song you've quoted is HOMEWARD BOUND written by Paul Simon and recorded by Simon and Garfunkel, 1966. It's in the DT and discussed in this thread. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta Keen) From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 26 Feb 06 - 11:46 PM Susan's link appears to be a dead end from here. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,Anjuli Date: 26 Jan 07 - 03:27 PM I am hoping to perform Homeward Bound at a concert to benefit the refugees in Darfur this coming April. I first learned the song from a recording done by the von Trapp Children, and have been looking ever since for the flute background, which is the only accompaniment they use on the piece in their recording. Does anyone know where I can find the sheet music to this flute accompaniment for Homeward Bound? You can hear it on the von Trapp Children Vol. 1 -- it's the last track. Thanks! Anjuli |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,Father of Daughters Date: 28 Feb 08 - 09:07 PM My daughters sang this Homeward Bound song in school (mid grades). One is now 28 and the other now 19 years old. They have moved far away from dad. As I read the song and lyrics to this song (not Simon and Garfunkle), I recall the look on both of my children's faces.....9 years apart and singing this song in choir. They lifted their necks at the refrain "Bind me not to the pasture. Chain me not to the plow. Set me free to find my calling and I'll return to you somehow." I did not bind them. I did not chain them. I set them free to find their calling. I cry as I type the truth, they will return to me somehow. You never stop being a dad. But you fail if you bind them, chain them, and fail to set them free. A teardrop on a cheek has an eloquent story to tell. This song always places a teardrop on my cheek. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST Date: 02 May 08 - 10:00 PM This version of the song makes me cry every time I hear it. Last summer, a dear friend and SBO at my high school died suddenly in a car accident. It was so unexpected, and it hit the school hard, for he was such a good person that had just graduated from high school, and had a bright future, but he is in a better place. This song was sung at his funeral, and we knew it was the song he wanted to be sung. The second verse was particular powerful. "If you find it's me you're missing, if you're hoping I'll return, to your thoughts I'll soon be listening, in the road I'll stop and turn. Then the wind will set me racing, as my journey nears its end," then, "Set me free to find my calling, and I'll return to you somehow." It is so beautiful, and meant a lot to me when I was struggling. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,PAC Date: 05 Jun 08 - 11:22 PM Marta Keen's Bio from the Lorenze Music Site. Marta Keen has written and published children's songs and choral works since 1982. She completed a B.A. in English and Music at Texas Christian University in 1975, then performed full-time for four years with her own show band touring eight states and British Columbia. She then completed music certification at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon in 1979. During her 16 years as a music educator for grades K-12, she completed a master's degree in Library Science, wrote and directed children's musicals and performed as a pianist and singer throughout the Seattle, WA and Portland, OR areas. She received a graduate assistantship to Pacific Lutheran University, where she sang with the Choir of the West and studied choral composition. In 1996, Marta relocated to Las Vegas to become an elementary school librarian and accompanist for the school's honor choir. Composition has taken a back seat to motherhood; her son Eli, now 5, has a passion for blues guitar and a knack for parody lyrics. Marta continues to arrange for and accompany church and community choral groups in the Las Vegas area. YouTube has several very good choral and duet videos of this song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,PAC Date: 05 Jun 08 - 11:52 PM I have fallen in love with this song and I have put it in my "to-be-sung-at-my-memorial-service" file. With that in mind, I have worked up the chords in D - capo to play along with most arrangements on YouTube. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,The AntiSmurf Date: 13 Jul 08 - 03:42 PM For those curious why this appears on Science Fiction Fan sites, it's referred to in John Ringo's book "Manxome Foe." You have to Google it and find the slide show of the military in Iraq accompanied by the BYU university singers to understand how it fits into the plot. And yes, the main characters both cry, even the "space marine." I teared up myself when I found the link on Youtube. It tied right in with the space marine on a long tour in the USA's first spaceship, when only 5 of 41 marines returned alive from their previous tour of duty, and his girlfriend knows that. Best link I've found with the lyrics included is http://www.mypeacelovehappiness.com/military/homeward_bound.html |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,the carnival wrestler Date: 11 Aug 08 - 01:32 AM I heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir perform this in October of '06, pennywhistle, orchestra, and all. It was very beautiful. I am now singing in a choir that is performing the piece, but I view it differently than many people. I see it as a romantic love song, pure and simple. "If you find it's me you're missing, if you're hoping I'll return..." seems to confirm this. Am I alone in this viewpoint, or ??? Most everyone else seems to think it's a religious song, but to me, it's a straightforward song about a man returning to a woman he loved. In that context, it's a religious song, because I believe that true romantic love is ordained of God, and it's the highest form of love and charity that we can feel for another person, and it's infinitely sacred, but I don't think the song is about us returning to God after this life is over. It's about a man and a woman, and I think it's entirely appropriate that it be sung by the MoTab or any other religious choir. Comments? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: Jim Dixon Date: 12 Aug 08 - 08:34 PM I thought it described a young person leaving his/her parents' home and striking off on his/her own for the first time, maybe against the parents' wishes. Anyway, I think that's the meaning young people are likely to find in it, and that's probably why it's so popular with them. I'd call it filial love, not romantic love. If it's romantic love, it's hard to see why the narrator would fear being bound to the pasture, or chained to the plow. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,Ronyer Date: 20 Aug 08 - 04:47 PM I fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. My children attended a high school in rural southwestern Ohio and I heard it there as part of the spring band/choir concert. The choir director had the choir sing it two or three times while he was there. I always thought that he was trying to send a message to some of the parents who were farmers. Some of the kids were from large extended families who, over the generations, came to own very large farms and probably expected their kids to follow in their footsteps. The mention of pasture and plow takes on a poignant meaning when seen in that light. But then again, maybe he just liked it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,Guest, L. Naylor Date: 17 Nov 08 - 01:59 PM This is an amazing song. I think that it can be taken in whatever meaning you feel to put to it. I looked at it as a man who is about to pass away, and he is telling his family to please let him go home. So, there is a different take on it as well. I have the WMA file from BYU Singers if anyone needs me to send it to them. letha@umcinc.us |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Homeward Bound (Marta King) From: GUEST,Patty Date: 27 Nov 08 - 10:01 PM I am singing this song for a solo festival that happens to be on Valentine's Day. I just love the song and I guess I'm good at singing it because as my music teacher and I were searching book after book to find a song for me to sing, we found two or three and immediately after I finished singing this one she said, "That's the one." I guess I have to wait until my throat stops hurting, because every time I try to get to the E-flat, my voice cracks. It's not really a song that one can sing in one's "head voice." To whomever it was who asked if it sounded like "Colors of the Wind," I sang that for solo in fifth grade and I suppose that if you really think about it, it kind of sounds like it. Maybe it's just the chords in the piano part. To me, it sounds Irish, which is awesome, since I have a cruch on an Irish guy. (Except that he's 24 and married, but he hugged me on two separate occasions and said that he would marry me if it didn't work out between Nick Jonas and me!!!) |

Subject: ADD: Homeward Bound (Marta Keen) From: GUEST,homeward bound :) Date: 22 May 09 - 03:38 PM i just heard of this song the other day, when all of a sudden my chorus teacher played it on the piano and everyone sang but me and my elementary school students. apparently we were the only one who didnt sing that song in fourth grade. it sounded beautiful anyways, sung by my 6th grade chorus class out of nowhere. so that day, i went home and searched it on youtube, heard it more beautifully, learned the lyrics, and now i LOVE it and it is stuck in my head constantly, which i dont mind :) it is a beautiful song, sung by anyone. here are the lyrics: ....................... Homeward Bound (Marta Keen) in the quiet misty morning, when the moon has gone to bed, when the sparrows stop their singing, and the sky is clear and red. when the summers ceased its gleaming, when the corn is past its prime. when adventures lost its meaning, i'll be homeward bound in time. bind me not to the pasture, chain me not to the plow. set me free to find my calling and i'll return to you somehow. if you find its me your missing, if your hoping i'll return, to your thoughts i'll soon be list'ning in the road i'll stop and turn. then the wind will set me racing as my journey nears its end. and the path i'll be retracing when im homeward bound again. in the quiet misty morning, when the moon has gone to bed, when the sparrows stop their singing, i'll be homeward bound again. ........................... i think the song is written by marta keen. :) |
