... is the 'new old fashioned way' as Brenda Lee sings in 'Rocking around the Christmas tree'?

My poor account-addled brain can't get round this concept.. the virgin birth, consubstantialism and chocolate coated pretzels = no problem but a new old fashioned way? Beyond me!

Since she sang it so long again, now it's the old new old fashioned way.

I think she's singing the details of the new OF way in the song itself-- rockin' around, etc. In the later choruses doesn't she sing, "It's the new... old... fash....ioned... waaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy...."?

My sister must have just heard the song too, because she told me this in her holiday email: "I know this is a harried time of year for you guys, just a big sister reminder to remember you're "hosting" the biggest birthday party of the year, so celebrate with some rockin, happy hymns and spread that joy!"

Good question, LTS!

To me, the phrase "new old fashioned way" implies reviving an old custom, but doing it in a new way. The new way must mean rock 'n' roll. That implies that, before that, people used to dance around the tree, but it wasn't the rock 'n' roll type of dancing.

However, I'm not aware of any custom of dancing around a Christmas tree. In fact, in my experience, Christmas trees are always placed against a wall, so it would be impossible to dance around it. Who has a house big enough to put the tree in the middle of a room, so people can dance around it? Maybe I'm being too literal.

The phrase certainly IS mysterious, and I never thought about it until you mentioned it.

Is it sort of like 'round the maypole' but with a Christmas tree and tinsel strings instead?

Or jiving round a small, table top sized tree on the floor, instead of a handbag?

There is a children song ' Dance round the christmas tree' which would suggest that some time or somewhere someone did do just that so probably the idea comes from the old 'carolling' which was dancing AND singing. So doing it rock and roll style would be the 'new old fashion'. But I have been at the cava so what do I know lol.
