I've got a lot of vinyl records, tapes, CDs etc backed up on my PC as .wav files.

I'm wanting to convert a lot of them to mp3s so that I can play them via an iPod in the car.

A quick google search suggests that there are loads of options available. Anyone have any recommendations as to which are any good?

I just use iTunes. If you want to use them on an iPod, you've probably already got iTunes installed.
Import all the wavs into iTunes, and in the preferences set the Import to be mp3 format. Select all the songs and use the "Convert to MP3" on the popup menu.

This one is highly recommended by the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup. I have not used it personally yet, so am not absolutely sure abot batch processing) I'll check a couple places.

Also, a very good program which I just recently updated JetAudio, has a built in converter, even in the free, basic mode. One can add a bunch of files and select the output mode.

These guys have a pretty impressive suite of video / audio processing apps. And they seem to work as expected too.

But whatever I would prefer to download any freeware apps. from http://www.cnet.com - they can then be almost guaranteed not to harbour viruses or trojans etc.
