I should have saved my pennies... like from birth on...

More than 3,900 bottles of primarily single malt Scotch will be sold by online whisky auction specialists Whisky Auctioneer next year.

I was at a party on Friday where there was a bottle of Glenlivet in with the other beverages. I got the appropriate sized glass, poured a jigger, and gave it a sniff and taste - this 12-year-old scotch has a medicinal taste, none of the smoke and only some of the peat that I'm particularly fond of. It was okay, I didn't waste it, but not one I'd buy for myself.

A friend also tried it and in the next few minutes I could tell that he wasn't accustomed to Scotch, let alone neat - he added water to his to finish it. I have over the years learned a lot at Mudcat; one of those things was about single malt Scotch and how to drink it. :)

Bill, did you ever get over to the Total Wine store in your area? (I refer you to this "Question about Scotch" thread of Kendall's from several years ago.

Bill, one hopes that someone with such a collection on display lives in a tectonically stable region of the country.

The Glenlivet 12 has never been one for peat and smoke (which I also like). Dunno about medicinal but it's quite light and (allegedly) floral. It's good to have a choice, but my choices would include Talisker, Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg and Caol Ila from Islay, Talisker and Aberlour, great whiskies , in fact I think I'll have one now.
On a visit to Wrights of Skipton last week [ probably the best whisky shop in the Noth of England ] I was told that Aberlour are phasing out the 10 year old expression, bugger.

I am glad that these collectors have a chance to appreciate that they own fine whiskey. My problem, though is that their joy is only in the ownership and the cash it represents. These guys never open the bottles to appreciate the ambrosia they own, as it would instantly lose most of its value to collectors.
It's not like a classic car, which can be fully [but carefully] appreciated as well as being curated for the next person who enjoys the vehicle for what it is, rather than what it represents. There is no interaction other than displaying the bottle and saying "Look at how rich I am."
