"Daniel Boone," Season 5, episode 25. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpWO8Gx1RMI   Got almost to the end of this one before I was stumped. 48:31-48:51 fiddle tune reminiscent of several songs but isn't any of them. 49:32: Same tune starts again.

Starts out almost like "Soldier's Joy" and then a little like "Skip to My Lou" but not exactly either one, like a medley but not. Is this even a real tune or is the fiddler just making it up? Thanks for any help.

Link to time

It does sound quite a bit like Skip to My Lou in places, but I'm not convinced it is. I'll refresh the thread anyhow just to see if some more keen ears than mine can lend a hand.

Thanks. I won't feel terribly bad if it's not identified as it doesn't sound like a real tune.

It sounds a bit like the Rakes of Mallow

Yes, indeed, "The Rakes of Mallow," in a square dance rhythm and the second strain an octave lower.

A good choice for the show, since according to the Traditional Tune Index it first appeared in print (as a "Caledonian Country Dance") in 1733.

Coming back to ask, are you absolutely sure about "The Rakes of Mallow"? I played a couple of YouTube videos identified as "The Rakes of Mallow" and this tune is very familiar to me. I know it as "Mitty Matty Had a Hen," and the tune used constantly through the movie "The Quiet Man." The tune I asked to have identified sounds nothing like this and was unfamiliar except for sounding a little like "Skip to My Lou." Thanks.
