Subject: Folk-a-delic at Sears? From: Naemanson Date: 01 Sep 00 - 04:46 AM Now, I'll be the first to admit I don't get out much. I am not a shopper. I don't go into the stores unless I need something and then I only go for what I need. But yesterday I took my courage in hand and went shopping with my daughter for back to school clothes. I kinda had to, I had the checkbook and she's living with me now. Anyway, while in Sears my eye was caught by a sign that said "FOLK-A-DELIC". I had to know more. I casually strolled over to check it out. The shirts were colorful but not unusual to my eye. The blue jeans, however, were flared (or bell bottoms) and had colorful patches sewn all over them. There was a lavender shawl type garment which also sported patches and flowers. Flowers seemed to be a dominant theme. So what gives? Has Sears mis-interpreted the folk music world for the lost age of the hippy? Am I being overly sensitive to pokes at folk music? Could they be referring to some other "folk" thing of which I remain unaware? I guess part of my discomfort stems from the fact that I am tired of certain misconceptions in popular entertainment and I think that this is another. I know that any sitcom that wants to portray folk music will show a circle of people gathered around one guitar player all singing Kumbaya or Michael Row The Boat. Or am I making a big deal out of nothing in particular? Should I go get a life? |

Subject: RE: BS: Folk-a-delic at Sears? From: sian, west wales Date: 01 Sep 00 - 05:35 AM There's a junior shopper's dream! A parent (father? even better!) with a check book and a department-store virgin. Strike while the iron is hot, child! These windows of opportunity are few and far between in this life! Naemanson, roll with the punches, dear. Yeh, this guilt by association, hippy-equals-folk, can get on the nerves. Unfortunately, there's always that thread of validity: I certainly did the flowered-bell-bottom thing ... but thankfully I think all the photos plus negatives are now destroyed or safely locked away. Apologies for my role in eternally tarring folk music with that brush. sian (born to shop) |

From: SINSULL Date: 01 Sep 00 - 03:08 PM "Flower Power" War is a terrible thing for children and other living things."BR>"Off the pigs" Groovy" Naemanson, You missed the perfect opportunity to behave like a proper parent and embarrass the hell out of your daughter. Did you at least hold up the "V" and bid "Peace" to the checkout clerk as you left? Or hum "Blowing In The Wind"? loudly enough to attract a security guard? |
