The very best thing that Jerry Jeff ever sang/wrote. Lovely! One of my all-time favorites. If you want the lyrics only, I can supply. I will type them out for you tomorrow if no one else can.

Here you go:

STONEY
(Jerry Jeff Walker)

I first ran into Stoney
In some bar downtown
Was Richmond, Virginia
We were bummin' around
Suitcase to suitcase
We started in talkin'
Findin' out about the things we shared
And the miles we'd been
He had a grey pillowcase
Full of books by Durell
And he had this old concertina
All beat up, and she played like hell
Until you got him started singing those gospel songs
Well, he drank all night for nothin'
He told us stories 'til dawn

Then he said, 'Come on, get your bag, boy
Sun's up now and it's time to roll
Yeah, you know there ain't no better time
Than early in the morning
To be out walkin' down that road
Just feelin' another day beginning
While some fool's just rushin' on by
We'll be like some Mr Independence
We'll be takin' our own sweet time'
So we walked on out that highway
Under a clear blue sky
I was listenin' to the tales he told
Drinkin' warm red wine
'Bout that night he rolled seven
'Bout some girl he'd done wrong
About everything he could think of
While we walked along
Yeah, old Stoney had a magic
Made him hard to forget
'Bout the night we flew down the highway
His old pick-up, it was nearly wrecked
Was some crazy woman drivin'
All drunked up and carryin' on
So Stoney finally calmed her
Singin' those gospel songs

Well, we split the road at Norwood
And he just shook my hand
He said, 'I'll see you some place, friend'
But, you know, he never has
But we were that free then
Just walkin' down the road
And never really carin'
Where that highway goes
Yeah, well Stoney was a liar
He bullshitted, ain't no doubt about it
It was just the way he told things
Made you never want to doubt him
'Cause he kept you goin'
When the road got rough
And brought you through the lean times
By makin' it up

Thank you kindly, Stewie. It's my favourite Jerry Jeff Walker song. Mr. Bojangles is great but this one's superb.

Must be nice to find a song that's positive about bummin' around when you're living the life, walkinman. For the rest of us it can only appeal to the hobo in our hearts.
