I am for years now looking for information about a folksong with the following lines:

when you are lonesome and blue in the shadow, then my friend go home. Home to the freedom and peace of the kingdom, the kingdom of friendship alone. Then you will find that friendship is everyone's home.

It's a kind of melancholic folkrock, the male singer has a sharp voice, a bit peter sarstedt atmosphere but not as soft,it dates I think from the 70's. there is also an accordion used in this song. I taped it in july of 1988 from Dutch FMradio (but it's most likely to be English, Irish or American) and put a short (30 seconds) MP3sample of this song on my homepage:

I listened to it, but it doesn't sound at all familiar to me. The only thing I can hear is that the singer possibly has a language other than English as his first language, that is that he seems to have a strong accent. So he may not necessarily be English, Irish or American.

Good luck with your search. Wait for some other Mudcatters to listen to it and you might get the answer.

Hi David, I've not heard this song or singer before, sorry, but it sounds to me as if his English has a Dutch accent- and the accordion playing is in a sort of French style. Sorry not to be any more help.

Sounds very much like Michel Jonasz, "Triste et bleu," sung Hapa Haole style (mixed English and French). He is a well-known songwriter and singer in Europe. Here are the first two verses; you can compare with what you know of the song:

He goes on to sing about Margaritas served by Marilyn, Chicago blues, B. B. King, a Lincoln Continental. A great song. The part "in the shadow" I am uncertain about.

Hi guys, Thanks for helping and listening. About Michel Jonasz: it's at least not the last song, because it's only sung in english, with no references to any well known names or things. I was wondering about the accent: Could it be an irish dialect or for example somebody from quebec in Canada singing english?
