G'day Frank,

I don't think players of the humble folk concertina constitute a big enough market to warrant tooling up for a video on the basic squeezebox ... resort to the technology of the concertina's day - a book.

I can heartily recommend the Mel Bay Concertina Tutor. It's been around since the 1950s, to judge by the photos of its author (Frank Converse ... ?), presents both button number/direction playing code and real music notation ... has music from the simplest up to a (re-written for concertina) Mozart Concerto - and taught my wife, Patricia, enough basics for her to be able to ask me what all those extra things were that I did ... and to raise her aspirations to the point where she snaffled my top-grade Lachenal 22-key model and left me to buy a somewhat lesser G/C 22-key box for a lot more money!

Most of the expensive teaching material for Anglo concertina is aimed at those who want to play 30- to 44-key Anglo-chromatics in modern Irish stage virtuoso styles ... and don't relate to folk styles.

Regards,

Bo

G'day again Frank,

I did find two older threads on the subject of learning to play Anglo:

This one in 1999   and

This one in 2005.

The only site I found for Mel Bay's Concertina Book was:

Mesa Music ... and they don't have a price list - just: "To make a purchase, e-mail a list of items that you would like sales@mesamusic.com".

My local bookseller did bring in a couple of copies (to Sydney, Australia) earlier this year, as his wife is learning Anglo ... and I needed an extra one for a player coming to my Monday Night Music Sessions - so they are (or were recently) still available ... and well paced for a beginner.

Regards,

Bob

If you send me your address I will send a free Cd tutor on a twenty button Anglo.Mainly English style however it does not cover Irish playing. There are also some free MP3 downloads on my site and the music which accompanies the tutor.
There are no DVDs or vidios to my knowlege, but John Kirkpatrick was working on one.
Owing to the various layouts for keys above twenty there is a major difficulty to cater for this market.I am not sure that it can be done, but good luck to someone having a go at it.
Al

Frank I will pass your name and address to another Jones,Alex who lives in the USA and he will post one off to you from there.
My site address
www(dot)filmsonglass(dot)co(dot)uk/concertina-index(dot)htm
If you are interested in different styles of Anglo playing or what an Anglo can do,we have just compiled a 3CD collection called "Anglo International" in stock at "Button Box" or Uk "Roots Records".
For more details have a look at The versatility of the Anglo Concertina on this forum.
The free CD is on the condition that you just let us know how you are getting on with it.
Good luck
Al
