Subject: Help finding an unusal set of lyrics From: Michael at jshewkc@cyclops.pei.edu Date: 24 Mar 99 - 12:06 AM For those who don't know, I have a huge pile of folksongs all around my computer, so most of my friends think that if they need to find a song, just ask ol' Michael. He'll know the lyrics. Well, one of my "pals" sent me a fragmentary lyric that I cannot, in any way shape or form, locate the original to! You folks oughta be able to help. Here's what he sent me: I left Rome for Laylargay's sake By the legions road to Reamoney She swore her heart was mine to take With my sword and my shield to Reamoney 'Till the eagles flew from Reamoney Any ideas? Michael (the confused guy in the corner) |

Subject: RE: Help finding an unusal set of lyrics From: alison Date: 24 Mar 99 - 12:53 AM Hi Michael, Be prepared...people are likely to have a go at you(because of the title of your request)....its not your fault... you are new to how things work here... so please don't take it personally..... So first of all welcome to Mudcat..... If you are looking for a song it is much easier to put some of the lyrics into your request title (don't use quotation marks or they disappear), if you do this you are likely to get a quicker response. We get a heap of threads titled "looking for lyrics' or "lyrics required".. which will make it very difficult for you to track your one down again. Also mutliple requests for the same song don't improve your chances.... you are better to refresh the old one, (hence the need for a title you can find again) I will start one for you. slainte alison |

Subject: RE: Help finding an unusal set of lyrics From: Penny Date: 24 Mar 99 - 04:30 PM Try Kipling. Either the Definitive Verse, where it's longer, or Puck of Pook's Hill, where it's not. It's under the title of "Rimini", and she's called Lalage. Didn't know it had a tune, used to sing it to my own. |

Subject: RE: Help finding an unusal set of lyrics From: SteveF (inactive) Date: 25 Mar 99 - 09:44 AM Dear Confused Guy: Chew on this: ON THE GREAT WALL Rudyard Kipling When I left Rome for Lalage's sake By the Legions' Road to Rimini, She vowed her heart was mine to take With me and my shield to Rimini-- (Till the Eagles flew from Rimini!) And I've tramped Britain, and I've tramped Gaul And the Pontic shore where the snow-flakes fall As white as the neck of Lalage-- As cold as the heart of Lalage! And I've lost Britain, and I've lost Gaul,' (the voice seemed very cheerful about it), 'And I've lost Rome, and, worst of all, I've lost Lalage!' They were standing by the gate to Far Wood when they heard this song. Without a word they hurried to their private gap and wriggled through the hedge almost atop of a jay that was feeding from Puck's hand. 'Gently!' said Puck. 'What are you looking for?' 'Parnesius, of course,' Dan answered. 'We've only just remembered yesterday. It isn't fair.' That's only the beginning; for the full text, click here. Now, what else ya got? -- SteveF. |

Subject: RE: Help finding an unusal set of lyrics From: Steve Parkes Date: 25 Mar 99 - 12:48 PM Most of Kipling's poems will sing ok - he wrote them that way, often with a specific tune in mind. For some reason, when "composers" have got to work on a K poem, they've tended to chop the words about to suit their tunes: take "Mandalay" or "Boots", for example - quite unnecessary! 'Course, anyone who hangs around pubs chatting up soldiers today would probably be arrested! Steve, not a million miles from Rudyard lake. |
