What is wrong with this world? I was listening to CBC radio on my way to work yesterday as is my want and "The Current" was airing a piece, especially for Valentine's Day on a company that offers alibis to its clientelle. Anna Maria Tremonti (the show's host) was interviewing the marketing manager from this company and he was explaining how they offered their services to cheating spouses and people who wanted to bunk off work. The guy seemed very proud of the whole operation and I was actually surprised at Tremonti for her lighthearted approach to the interview. I found the whole thing stomach turning.

Her lighthearted approach would probably soon change if the alibi affected her.

It will change the day she thinks she's supplied an alibi for one of these so-called "innocent" purposes, and finds that someone has used it to cover a murder.

That"s the way of the world today,I"m afraid !! Honour ?? Decency?? Self-discipline?? Denial?? Restraint ?? Honesty?? All gone,I fear!! About 10 years ago ,I did an "Access to Higher Education " course at Bournemouth & Poole College. Cheating & Plagiarism were rife--One young man,an Australian, handed in ,as a major part of his History Final assignment, the essay written the previous year by his girlfriend, and one of the girls on the course cheerfully admitted that ALL of her written assignments,in both History & English, were done for her by her father, who was an Education Officer in the RAF !!!These two are probably teachers now, bless "em !!!

One of the examples this manager mentioned involved a man who was cheating on his wife. He wanted to go see his girlfriend. So he told his wife he was going on a fishing trip with some friends. The cheating husband contacted this Alibi company who rerouted his phone so that it looked like he was calling from the area where he was supposedly fishing. His wife was given a number of a phoney lodge where she could call him. But in reality she was calling the Alibi people. The thing that got me was the manager of the Alibi company seemed like this was the most legitimate business going. He even made reference to the fact that he was a family man and that the business helped people that may be in abusive relationships. HOW! I think that if I was in an abusive relationship I wouldn't be spending money on any alibi company. I'd be packing my bags and getting the hell out. He finished by saying that Valentine's was a particulary busy time of the year for them.

I think I'd rather be out of work than do that.

Only if she got caught doing it, surely. Otherwise it'd just be another satisfied client. Might even be some extra profit in it, since she could put the squeeze on the murderer. After all, business is business...
