Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: Crowhugger Date: 14 Feb 00 - 05:48 PM This should be mieux, j'espere. Ah, SP returns a son amour. Et bien, a tout a l'heure je retournerai aux miens. Mes instruments, ma (mon?) voix inclus, m'attendent.
Ici sont les paroles - "Old Grand-mere"

Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: Peter T. Date: 14 Feb 00 - 06:49 PM I remain hopelessly thrilled with the Mudcat, after 4 years here. I have never known a dull day (though I would have liked one or two, heaven knows). I still find it hard to believe that there are such knowledgeable, nice people who are prepared to search like hell for information; including professional musicians who will talk about what they love, to anyone here who sincerely asks. As a scholar in other fields, I particularly admire the music discussions, which have opened whole realms of understanding to me. But it is the give-and-take of community life that really keeps me here. I can't believe that I know people in Iceland, Wyoming, Australia, Argentina, Yorkshire, Belgium well enough so that we could start our first face-to-face conversation half way through. I am constantly amazed that I can come here every day, and check into this wide world of crazy, wise people. I have only met a tiny (wonderful) fraction of the people that are here. My idea of a good time would be to wander around meeting most of the rest of them -- and, Allah willing, I will some time. It is the best. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: katlaughing Date: 14 Feb 00 - 06:55 PM Simon-Pierre and Crowhugger, well-done! I'm with Blue Jay on wishing I could remember the 2nd & 3rd languages I once knew, as well as you write English, SP, and you, French, CW. My husband's father came from Isle Verte on the St Laurent near Quebec (still has relatives there) and so, Roger was raised learning in French in the monrings at school and English in the afternoons, but he is pretty rusty at it anymore, with no one to practise with. It is a pleasure to see so much going on in an international way, here, on the Mudcat. Once again, welcome! katlaughing |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: Crowhugger Date: 14 Feb 00 - 07:17 PM k/k, peut-etre SP vous aiderez. In case you're REALLY rusty, "maybe SP will help you." A nice BS: multilingual thread or something...it's fun to try, and if we aren't understood, well you sure can count on folks to ask. I think it's wonderful that SP is willing to just do it. SP, I guess I shouldn't volunteer your help without asking first, but...well, I hug crows mostly for variety - I've eaten so much of them that hugging is a nice change. If you don't know the expression, "eat crow," just holler (call out). This is a great place to learn international English idioms, eh?

Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: PN Date: 15 Feb 00 - 11:54 PM Nice people . .comfortable feeling. Kind of log-cabinny, with a cheery fire, hot drinks, lots of laughter . . .and the knowledge that it is cold and inhospitable outside. Good place - this mudcat land. |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: katlaughing Date: 16 Feb 00 - 12:25 AM Crowhugger, to my great chagrin I had no interest in French when in school. Took Latin & German from 7th grade on through high school, but it doesn't show much now.*BG* I had Spanish when I was in grade school, briefly, then picked up more about 8yrs ago when my husband was working in Venezuela and I had to bill them in Spanish! Really interesting...I called a piece of equipment a "fur coat" one time! I have picked up a few phrases in French which I recognise and the Latin helps with a lot. I told Rog about this thread and SP, last night, then for the first time, he tells me about an ancestor who was supposed to've given the Plains of Abraham to Quebec City a long time ago! And I've been married to him for twenty yrs! Cela est digne de lui! katlaughing |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: Crowhugger Date: 16 Feb 00 - 12:48 AM k/k: mythology of the Great White North (GWN) is that both anglo-Wolf and franco-Montcalm generals perished in the big battle. I'm sure somebody thinks they won, but hell, it was a war! |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: GUEST,Sharon Date: 16 Feb 00 - 12:59 AM What a great discovery. Have a little group and need Kendall's help. Had a friend who sang "I had a hat" with no discernable tune. He just died and I need the tune for a memorial service to be held a couple of months hence. Is this possible? |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: wysiwyg Date: 16 Feb 00 - 01:04 AM GUEST Sharon-- Yes, if you post a new thread with a tune request prefix. Do you know how? |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: Crowhugger Date: 16 Feb 00 - 01:09 AM GUEST,Sharon, Liam aka Jed was asking the same thing. There's already a thread going about it. Welcome! Why dontcha take a look-see? |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: simon-pierre Date: 16 Feb 00 - 02:06 PM Well, if there's any questions about french, leave me personnal message. D'autre part, I can confirm that both Wolf and Montcalm are dead now, and that Abrahm Plains is a nice place to drink and sing with all your folks. SP |

Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: mariachera Date: 17 Feb 00 - 07:59 PM Tho my field is mariachi music I found Mudcat when I was looking for Irish stuff. Think this a great site. |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 19 Apr 11 - 03:32 PM "...Tho my field is mariachi music I found Mudcat when I was looking for Irish stuff." Still funny ten years on. (And a true summary of one precious aspect of the Mudcat ethos.) |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: Herga Kitty Date: 19 Apr 11 - 04:03 PM Kevin - you're absolutely right, but my mind is boggled that you found this thread 11 years on! Kitty |
Subject: RE: Road to old grandmere From: GUEST,Guest L Arsenault Date: 29 Jul 12 - 11:56 AM Thank you for those lyrics! We were looking for them too. We used to sing it when we were kids. One more verse; I saw a cow. She gave the milk. It was most extraordinary. She said 'choisizie donc' you can have your choice, Chocolat, vanilla or cherry' Lissa Arsenault Nova Scotia |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: GUEST,Claire M (Permanant GUEST!) Date: 30 Jul 12 - 11:31 AM Hiya, Cherry, please. I don't know how I found this. The name sounds like a blues band – was/is it?? It's easier than the other websites I've used, because you don't have to join/pay, & it's not only for a certain band – that's fine, nothing wrong with that -- unless you go off said band/they become less important to you, then you lose all the friends you've made there. |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: Willie-O Date: 31 Jul 12 - 05:32 AM Just to pick up on the briefly paused conversation, Kat, (you're still around I presume, I'm not very often) James Keelaghan wrote a song called "Abraham" after doing a bit of research on who he was--the "Plains Of --" guy. Turned out to be a very well-connected habitante. Your hubby might want to look this song up. |
Subject: RE: On Being a New Member of Mudcat From: Amos Date: 31 Jul 12 - 09:23 AM All these great souls of Mudcat Past, as bright and quick and warm as ever!! This is a great thread. I find the number of years hard to believe, though. So much time, thrashing around in death throes! C'est tragique! A |
