Subject: RE: BS: what do you think will happen in Isreal From: Noreen Date: 21 Jun 02 - 07:28 AM Rich and Bagpuss, the thing is in this case that the originator of this thread only starts political threads, basically asking the same question(s) repeatedly and causing the same arguments to be rehashed and entrenched positions to be restated ad nauseam. Some of us have got rather fed up, that's all. And have you ever had a ray smile at you? They're just as sweet as bunnies, though not as furry... |

Subject: RE: BS: what do you think will happen in Isreal From: RichM Date: 21 Jun 02 - 08:15 AM So, essentially, only people who post music related articles are allowed to start political threads? Or more distressing, only political threads that meet some unstated criteria? I don't like these restrictions. Here's what a search of the database using the word "Israel" revealed. Lots of political discussion here! Rich

Subject: RE: BS: what do you think will happen in Isreal From: Noreen Date: 21 Jun 02 - 09:40 AM Rich, did you read my full sentence, or stop at the first comma? My point is that these political threads (are)basically asking the same question(s) repeatedly and causing the same arguments to be rehashed and entrenched positions to be restated ad nauseam If you want to debate the subject with RO1SIN I'm not stopping you, and I would have ignored this thread as I do the others. I do find it difficult to understand however, why someone would hang around this (largely) musical place but not take advantage of the music, preferring to wind people up on political topics totally unrelated to the music. (Clicking on the author's name above his initial post will bring up all his postings- you decide.) Right, I'm off to get ready for Alcester Folk Festival. :0) Noreen |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: Deda Date: 21 Jun 02 - 11:48 AM I love, love, LOVE folk music, and I'm interested in Israel, but I don't have time for another thread about it right now. I posted on the subject yesterday in the "Who are the terrorists" thread, and that wore me out and used up all my free time. (The list of threads above doesn't include that set of threads, with "terrorists" in the title, which are almost entirely about the middle east.) |

Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: Deda Date: 21 Jun 02 - 06:08 PM The following was forwarded to me, I haven't corrected any of the spelling nor the punctuation, nor the factual details, which could all use a little editing. But it's on the subject of the thread, and currently making the email rounds. I wouldn't bet the rent against Israel (from here on this is by someone else, not me, I'm just the one posting this). ************************************* I thought this was a great perspective from a friend's cousin who lives in Israel..........read on and smile! I am not the least afraid to go any place, by bus or to a mall. I didn't change or stop doing ANYthing I used to do before this mess began. People tend to forget that twice the casualties from terror get killed on the roads! More people still die from heart attack, cancer, and other things; they just don't show them on TV. Don't misunderstand me, there is a war going on, it's not pleasant, but lets face it.. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN BETTER!!!! It's only TV and media that make people think it's the end of the world coming. Only 60 years ago!! They were leading Jews to their death like sheep to the slaughter! No country, no army. 55 years ago!! Seven Arab countries declared war on the small Jewish state, only a few hours old!! We were then 650,000 Jews! Against the rest of the Arab world! No IDF, no mighty air force, just tough people with nowhere to go (Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, attacked all at once). The country the U.N. "gave us" was 65 % desert. The country started from scratch! 35 years ago!! We fought the three strongest armies in the Middle East, and wiped them out in six days. We fought against different coalitions of Arab countries, with modern armies, and masses of Russian soviet weapons, and still won!!! We have today a country, and an army, and a strong air force, and hi-tech economy, exporting millions, Intel-Microsoft-IBM develop their stuff here, our doctors win world prizes for medical developments, we made the desert flourish, selling oranges and vegetables to the world. Israel has sent its own satellite!! In space (three satellites all together!!), we sit proudly with the U.S. (250 million people), Russia (200 million people!), China (1.1 billion), the Europeans --France-England-Germany (350 million), as the only countries in the world to shoot something into space!! Israel is today in the world nuclear power family with U.S, Russia, China, India, France, and England. (We don't admit it, but everyone knows...) To think that only 60 years ago, we were led, shameful, with no hope, to our death!! We crawled out of the burning ashes of Europe, we won our wars here with less than nothing in our hands, we built an "empire" out of nothing. Who the hell is Mr. Arafat to make me scared? Terrified? You make me laugh! Passover was last month, let's not forget what the story is all about. We overcame Pharoah, we overcame the Greeks, the Romans, the inquisition in Spain, we overcame the pogroms in Russia, we overcame Hitler, the Germans, the Holocaust, we overcame seven other Arab countries at once, we overcame Saddam. Take it easy, folks, we will overcome these ones too. No matter at what part of human history you try to think of, for us, the Jewish people, our situation has never been better!!! So let's lift our heads high, and remember: any nation or culture that tried to mess around with us was destroyed to the ground - while we kept going!!! Egypt? Anyone know where their empire disappeared to? The Greeks? Alexander of Macedonia? The Romans? Anyone today speak Latin? The Third Reich? Anyone heard any news about it lately? And look at us, the nation from the Bible, from slavery in Egypt we are still here, speaking the same language!! Right here, right now. The Arabs don't know it yet, but they will learn there is one God. As long as we keep our identity, we are eternal. So, sorry for not worrying, bitching, crying, or being scared, things are going o.k. here. They surely can go better, but still, don't fall for the media junk, they won't tell you that there are festivals going on, people keep on living, going out, seeing friends. Yes, our morale is low, so what? It's only because we weep for our dead while they enjoy the blood (and this is the same reason why, we will win, after all). You can forward this e-mail (if you choose) to the whole of the Jewish community in the United States, and the world. They are part of our strength and it might help some of them to keep their head up high. Tell them there is nothing to worry about. Tell them to think BIG and to see the whole picture. "See you next year in Jerusalem." |

Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: artbrooks Date: 21 Jun 02 - 07:21 PM The interesting thing is, it is a scientifically-proven fact that a horny white male bunny (is there any other kind) will jump a slinkey green lizard in preference to a cute female bunny 2 1/2 times out of 7. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: GUEST Date: 21 Jun 02 - 07:38 PM The British havent tried to defeat the IRA. Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: GUEST,mg Date: 21 Jun 02 - 10:33 PM I think one thing we can do is to lobby for the safety of everyone, and insist on security but also on fair treatment. Another thing we can do is to be watchful for statements that are triggers. The statement about oranges in a post above is a trigger. The Palestinians grew oranges; they were world famous. They exported them. They did not need other people to tell them how to grow oranges. They have lost their orange groves along with their olive orchards. They still grieve for these orchards. Their grandchildren who have never seen them still dream of them. They aren't going to get them back, except perhaps in token amounts, or in some sort of historical preserve, but we can still understand their grief. Can't we?? I'm Irish...people never forget land that they have loved. I personally know and worked for someone this happened to (back to the oranges). If we can be watchful of things like this that sound ok on the surface, but really are insulting, we can move forward a bit. I know this was not intentional; it is looking at something through our own lenses...mg |

Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: Butch Date: 22 Jun 02 - 09:07 AM How can you be "Irish" if you were both born in and live in the US? My great grandmother was Irish (born in Cork) but after she came here she insisted that she was American. By law, you are American since you were born here unless I am missing something. Please do tell.
|
Subject: BS: Who's "Irish"? From: Celtic Soul Date: 22 Jun 02 - 09:30 AM Butch... The definition is simply different for most here in the States. The US does not have one national identity. One of the greatest things about the US is the fact that it is the world in miniature. Cultures of origin thrive here, and without as much divisiveness as you find in some other places (though, admittedly, it does exist). I work in a business that is highly multi-cultural. We all celebrate one anothers culture of origin. Their are 3rd and 4th generation Hispanics and those who only just became citizens. We have Asians of many different countries, some having immigrated here, and some who's parents or Grandparents did. None of us has divorced ourselves completely from the lands that birthed us (or our Grandparents). We all have a few things in common. A love for this country, *and* a love for our ethnic origins. I am Scots-Irish/American, and proud of it. This makes me something very different than someone born in, and living in Ireland, but it also makes me something very different than someone born here in the USA of Italian descent, Mexican descent, Viet Namese descent, etc. Ones culture does not somehow disappear when one moves to a new land. In fact, ones culture does not get bred out even after many generations. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: artbrooks Date: 22 Jun 02 - 09:36 AM It is excessively cumbersome to say that I am German-English-Irish-French-Etc., especially since one part has been in the US since at least the 1750s and others didn't come until the 1890s. "American" is an adequate appellation. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: Big Mick Date: 22 Jun 02 - 09:41 AM The important distinction, Art, is that is OK for you. For many of us who were raised in an environment steeped in the cultures of origin, it is very important to us to retain our cultural identity. Mick |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: Celtic Soul Date: 22 Jun 02 - 09:51 AM Well said, Mick, and I second it. Art, I'd say that it *is* simply a matter of choice here in the USA. Which is another great thing about living here. I get to have that choice, and I can respect your choice not to as well. That, I think, is the very spirit of a multi-cultural nation. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: Celtic Soul Date: 22 Jun 02 - 09:55 AM Oh, and to bring this around to the subject of music, my cultural origins have had a great impact on the music I perform. I used to sing Russian Gypsy music. It just *felt* wrong, though it was beautiful, and I loved it. What felt wrong for me was that I did not culturally connect with it. I didn't have any history with it. I much prefer singing music of the British Isles. This may make me a "Plastic Paddy", but hey...it's what I feel genuinely connected to. |
Subject: RE: BS: What do you think will happen in Israel? From: artbrooks Date: 22 Jun 02 - 10:07 AM You miss the point.
