Hmmm -- it didn't LOOK like it had been opened, but maybe they're just really skillful. Maybe.

Liz, I'm glad the Santas will be outed eventually -- I'm still stumped! But I'm enjoying the gifts!

Nancy

Not here either.

I just got a parcel of jigsaw puzzles from America. (Can't get the sort I like here). It was opened by the Quarantine department because the word "Halloween" was in the title of one of them - mentioned on the declaration sheet. There was a note to say nothing was taken out but a glossy pamphlet told me I should tell my friends, overseas, that "items for cultural events" could well be banned from entry in Aus. Among the examples they listed were "pumpkins and straw dolls."

I sure hope my Secret Santa hasn't tried to send me a pumpkin. Cheers, Joy

Just got another parcel from America. A book from a second-hand book shop. This time the envelope had been slashed open across the name and address. It had been stuck back together so that the name was completely obscured and the only part left of the address was the post code. Somehow it found its way to me because the local post office staff know about my American connections and they made a clever guess.
Hooray for old-fashioned rural service. Cheers, Joy

Well I was going to say Boo Hoo but as I left for work this morning a parcel from Australia arrived

Thank you Jenny.

CD looks good, calendar will be useful, chocs and sweetie things always acceptable.

Now what shall I do with the vegimite dip thing?

The cuddly Rainbow Lorrikeet (with twittering belly) I shall pin to my shoulder at next Silly Songs night.

Vegemite dip--that's a compost biological activity starter, right? :)

Well Dave, it's an Aussie icon and all, and far superior to those other 'mites, so I thort you might like to see one of the things we do with it here. Kids take them to school for snacks and scoop bits out with their little biccies. If you don't fancy having it that way, it makes a good stock for soups and stews etc - or maybe if you want to paint something brown..........??

At least it sounds like customs didn't raid the box. I was a bit worried about the food items, so I wrapped them well.

I want a picture of you wearing the rainbow lorikeet!

Jenny

Dave, I have vegemite on toast almost every morning for breakfast. I also put teaspoons of it in things like casserole instead of stock cubes. A lunch thing that I like is toast with vegemite on it, topped with mixed cottage cheese and hummus, a grinding of pepper and finished with slices of tomato and red pepper and a sprinkling of chopped parsley. Lovely!

Actually, I think vegemite and tomato have a special affinity for each other. They make the most boring diet biscuit taste interesting!

But you need to put it between crackers with holes in them so that when you squash them together little brown worms pop out.
As for actually eating it I'm with SRS.
Cheers, Joy

Hi Vegimite fans.

I have known about the stuff for years but never actually got round to trying it.

I don't like marmite type stuff on its own but as a dollop of stuff in stews casseroles etc it's fine. Therefore next time I put my chefs hat and apron on I'll try the V-mite.

I'll have the biccies with cheese afterwards (with a glass of port of course).

Jenny I'll see what I can do about the photo (avec Keet). I'll have to do a deal with someone who has a digicam and knows how to post it to where you can see it.

Incidentally Jenny I have now had a chance to play the CD - great stuff and just the sort of thing I like.

Hi Dave. Glad you like the CD. I thought it might be your kind of stuff!

As for the vegemite - be brave. Before you put it all in the cooking, try some on toast. It tastes different from marmite. As Ford Prefect in the Hitchhikers Guide said, "Your mouth will love you for the rest of your life!"

OK friends I'm persuaded!

I'll give the vegimite a go when I get home to-night. I'm working till 18:00 then off to the theatre (after the Italian Restaurant) so it will be quite late.

Won't give me bad dreams will it?

Dave

Vegemite is Good Stuff & therefore can't give you bad dreams.

Dunno what Vegimite might do, tho, ya never know.

Put lots of butter on your bread or bikkie, then a scrape of Vegemite (yum) lovely buttery/slightly salty taste.

Or you could try my sister's way (scrape of butter & thick layer of Vegemite), but then she is an addict.

She's been living overseas in Nigeria & Kuwait for the past 10 years & I've always wondered what customs/quarantine folks think when this oil executive's wife comes out of Business Class with several giant (5 kilo?) jars of Vegemite each year.

I've had my tiny jar of Vegemite for several years now.

Thank you Sandra your suggestion noted.

An Aus. collegue has just passed by and tells me that V-mite can be bought in the UK but it is a lot more expensive than it is over there.

Seems we pay for a very small jar what you pay for a huge jar.

I suspect that this may not be a life changing experience (on economic grounds if no other)

Dave

When I was first in England, you could only buy vegemite in shops around Australia House in London. Nowadays you can buy it in supermarkets but it is LOTS dearer than in Oz. I pay £1.99 a little jar in Tesco. When we were last in Australia, we brought home a 1kg jar which was cheaper than my little jars.

In the 70s when I was doing the Aussie tourist thing and hitching around Britain and Europe and staying in Youth Hostels, you could always spot the Aussies in the dining room at breakfast time cos all the jars of vegemite would appear out of their packs.

Oh Dear,

I seem to have initiated a Vegimite highjack of the Santa Thread!

Sorry folks you may now have your thread back.

It was a pleasant interlude, Dave. Don't worry. Now back to watching the mail-box.
I'm like Dave's Wife though. I don't feel deprived. A lovely hand-crafted Birthday gift arrived the other day from Sandra of Sydney. Cheers, Joy

And I'm really irked because I went to a lot of trouble to choose something RAT-W would like and mail it on time. It clearly slipped through a chasm somewhere between Canada Post and the Royal Mail.

I guess it may possibly still turn up Charmion. My SS also said they were posting theirs and that it would be worth waiting for. It seems to me that the postal service is gooing downhill fast. Not only did a lot of the pressies not reach their destination, but I've heard of some that were sent back damaged. When you consider how few of us there are, the percentage of non-delivery or damage is pretty high

Love Lynne

I didn't get any presents at Christmas, nor my birthday 12/20. My son is the only one on whom I could rely for a gift, but now that he's in college, it is no big deal. (I must say, though, that mudcatter bbc has been my faithful Christmas elf.)
