Tech: Prob with Audacity

Subject: Tech: Prob with Audacity

I've recorded a track using Audacity. I can hear it through the headphones on playback no problem.
I want to record another line with it but when i record I can't hear anything, although it does actually record the second line.
How can I listen to the 1st track while recording the 2nd??

Check 'hardware playthrough' and 'software playthrough' in settings - enabling one of them may do the job. Other than that it's hard to comment without knowing more details (OS etc).

In Audacity preferences, select Audio I/O and you can choose to monitor playback while recording, and also hardware and software play thru. You may also have to go into your computer preferences to select the audio output--

I seem to remember having had your problem and discovering that, although I had selected the proper play thru options in Audacity, my computer output was set for something other than the headphone port.

The problem I'm having is that I want to edit an interview, a wav file imported to audacity via usb baton. It's playing back fine, but the audio is only coming through on my laptop's own speaker and the volume is far too low for me. I have headphones plugged into the computer, but the sound isn't transfering to the speaker jack. I've tried listening to an mp3 music recording saved on the computer, and to a youtube video, and they are both coming through the headphones at good volume. So how do I get Audacity to play on the headphones?
computer has Windows 10 and Realtek Audio Console
I downloaded a free version of Audacity just a few weeks ago.

Check the "playback volume" slider, should be towards the top, near the recording volume slider.

Try selecting Audio Setup/Playback Device and see if there is a selection there for your headphones.
If the recorded level is too low you can highlight the whole track (Select All) then go to Effects/Amplify then export as a new file.

Click on Edit, scroll "Audio" to "Preferences" and there you can select which devices you want to use for playback and for recording.
